Re: [BlindHandyMan] The great flood of o6.
Art, dumping in to the sewer plant is correct, to much load, but if you do not have a storm system where does the water go if you just pump outside. many communites under new grant programs are redoing their town and city underground pipes , thus adding those storm drains. as stated in a previous post , under a normal rainfall it is not a problem. Dan valid point about the backup finding another path to flood your basement. Where I have seen this work nicely there were no basement plumbing fixtures. Now if the floor drain is only connected to the storm drain system and there are no other paths to the inside of the house then still could be a possible solution. This house was built in the 1920s and back then it was not uncommon to have the rain gutters tied into the sewer system. I am guessing that they didn't even treat the sewage back then, they just let it all run into the rivers around here. So, not much of a surprise to find that my downspouts are going into the main line. Art, if you plug up the central drain, won't the water just come out of the next available place, namely the toilet in the basement or the sink? I don't see that as being much better. -- Blue skies. I am not in favor of spending extra bucks Dan or anyone else that knows me. but the camera does not lie. best money you could invest is withthat camera which can lead to the main system. Re: [BlindHandyMan] The great flood of o6.
ayup Dan, been there and done that. Might I suggest you use a simple toilet bowl plunger and wedge it into that floor drain. water will take the path of least resistance as you know. sometimes just plugging that floor dram will do it. In case of furthe action maybe an investment in a submursible pump would not hurt. one that will pump water down to one quarter of an inch offf that cellar floor.. and the list goes on. if those gutters feed into that dram as you say, then they need to be cleaned on a regular basis at least semin annually as that crap will plug up a trap quicker than one might think.. In most places it's illegal to put storm water down a regular sewer line. I think we know the reason now. Regards. Max. K 4 O D S. Well, we've had our first minor disaster here at Shay Rossi. Tuesday night Teresa went down to the basement to do some laundry. She yelled up, there's been an accident. We had recently done a bunch of cleaning up and rearranging the basement and I thought possibly the shelves had collapsed or the stack of coolers had fallen over. I went down to the basement and splashed into water not far from the bottom of the staircase. There was a rather large pool of water in the center of the floor around the main central drain. I checked the water heater, the furnace, and examined the the rest of the floor. The water hadn't come from the walls, the water heater, the furnace or anywhere obvious. The water had come up threw the floor drain. It had been raining and our down spouts are tied into the main drain so I surmised that either the main sewer line was overwhelmed, or that our connection to the sewer line was blocked. My neighbors didn't have water in their basements so I figured the problem was with my connection to the main line. Teresa and I started baling water into five gallon buckets and then hauling the buckets up and out of the house. We probably dumped about 30 gallons. I called a plumber and they said they would call in the morning to make arrangements for a visit. Since it had stopped raining and no more water was coming up the drain I figured we could hold off on using much water in the house and we would be fine. The plumber called bright and early at 8:30 on Wednesday and told me they couldn't come until noon on Thursday. I asked if they really couldn't come on Wednesday and they said they were booked. I agreed and went to work. We got home on Wednesday night and all was still OK in the basement. After dinner, I started putting together a new computer desk for Teresa. Around 9:00 PM the rain and thunder started. Shortly after I heard Teresa yell from the basement. Water was literally gushing up from the drain and was rising fast. I ran to a neighbors house and grabbed a tiny little piece of crap pump that I heard he had. I got back to the basement and the water was now about five inches deep at the center and just reaching the left and right walls. We picked up the few things on the floor that were in danger, and that were pick upable. I got the pump running with a hose out the window, but it was pathetically small. I grabbed a garden hose and ran that out the window and then filled a five gallon bucket with water and sat it up on a table and then got a siphon going. Then it was up to Teresa and I to make sure we kept the five gallon bucket full. The rain slacked off, the water stopped rising, and we eventually got ahead of it. After an hour and a half of working hard, (we were managing about four gallons a minute on the siphon and about two gallons a minute on the pump) we got the basement unflooded. A couple of rugs didn't make it, some fiber board got soaked on one edge, and one of my old parachutes got wet. Everything else seemed to survive OK. I had to go back down around 12:30 AM to bale about another six or eight gallons, but the rain had stopped. The plumber came today and snaked out the line but he said there is still some kind of blockage as he was not able to get all the way from the trap at the back of the house through to the main trap at the front. But water is flowing nicely again. Not sure what the blockage may be, but hopefully water will continue to flow unimpeded for the foreseeable future. Teresa and I spent this evening mopping and wiping down everything in sight with bleach water. It was mainly just rain water flooding the basement, but still it was coming back up through the line that sewage typically goes down, so we wanted to make sure we got everything clean. We have a couple of fans running in there now hoping to get things dried out. What a pain in the ass. Now I know how Lee feels. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Carnegie Mellon University.
