Re: [BlindHandyMan] ideal tool and equipment shop

2006-10-19 Thread Mickey Fixsen
Lee,

There used to be a place here that rented service bays for you to work on your
car. It was about 30 years ago. The problem, these days, is that the
liability insurance makes this prohibitive.

It would be great if we had such a place where every tool we could ever dream
of using would be at our fingertips. I have had to invest many thousands of
dollars to equip my shop with the tools and equipment to do the things that I
want to do.

There are none of those around here.

Do you think they would have a coronary if they had a blind guy show up and
want to use the shop?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] ideal tool and equipment shop

2006-10-19 Thread Dan Rossi
Lee,

Guess what, this mystical shop of which you speak, does exist. It is
called your local community college.

granted, they gave me some shit when I signed up for a wood working class
back in the spring. I jumped through their stupid hoops and signed a
waiver, but we had full access to a high school shop with lots of tools I
don't have, and don't have room for.

The only thing that I didn't like was that I thought I was paying for a
class to learn about wood working, but what I got was access to a shop and
a guy who would answer your questions if you could get his attention away
from the one cute girl in the class. I gave up after a couple of weeks.
But others may have a better experience if their local community college
has a class.

Later.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] ideal tool and equipment shop

2006-10-19 Thread Dale Leavens
I had a similar experience back in about 1975 at our local high school. The
instructor was being paid to run a class on behalf of the Community College
out of Timmins only back then there was no question about signing a waver.
There was a lot of conversation going on behind my back I didn't know about
and some sort of arrangement made that did not include me in any of the
negotiations, when it was put to me it was pretty well an ultimatum. That is
the short version it is a much longer story including that at the time I was
providing treatment for a highschool student of that same teacher for
fingers amputated by the table saw in that very shop. Obviously everyone had
an emotional stake in the event, in the end I had to drop it or the
instructor would refuse to run the class and that was no way for me to make
friends in a small town of around 4,000 at the time.

To this day it has left me with a certain truth, sighted people cut fingers
off and step in front of automobiles and fall out of buildings and all sorts
of things. Is it reasonable to demand that we, as blind persons must exceed
their performance standards?

Janet and I are more likely to be injured as pedestrians just because we
walk a lot, law of averages! That is independent of any other variables.

In the end it always comes down to the attitude of inclusion, it is there or
it is not. We cannot prove anything to anyone unwilling to be taught.

Of course that teacher didn't want me to cut any fingers off and neither did
I. The very fact that it already happened to someone in his class and under
his supervision did not make it apply to me, he was a fifteen year old kid!

I did have to concede one point, that moving about I might put others at
risk, maybe bumping into a board sticking out from a machine, something like
that. I don't know how to argue a point like that but in the end it wasn't
about good or poor arguments.
