Put a little vinegar with the water in the water gun and it will work even better. Cats do not like the smell. If you happen to have a water hose hooked up and ready, that also becomes an effective way to discourage a dog or cat which has taken a like to your property. I have heard of using citrus too. Some people mix citrus peels into there flower beds to keep cats out.
