The BMW UUC Digest Volume 4 : Issue 213 : text Format Messages in this Issue: Re: E36 Temp profile -- Date: Wed, 3 Dec 2008 20:04:27 -0800 (PST) From: Tammer Farid [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: bmwuucdigest@uucdigest.com Subject: Re: E36 Temp profile Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I had to make a quick run with no fan at all on my E36 on a warm day. I hit traffic once and the aftermarket temp gauge (reading from the t-stat housing) showed ~240F before the stock gauge started to move right. Traffic cleared up and the temps quickly dropped back to the normal ~210F range. Stock gauge comes out of the blue at ~110F, and is straight up from ~120F to 240F as far as I can tell. To answer the other question, I've had a fan clutch fail such that there was no cooling at all (leading to the scenario I just described above). The symptom is temps rising at low speed and dropping when you have airflow. Sounds more like your thermostat is stuck open. -tammer --- Carlos Lopez [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- On Wed, 12/3/08, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: What's the normal operating temp profile for your E36's? symptoms: On the E36M3, after 15min in stop and go at roughly 47 to 53C ambient You sure about degrees celcius? That's f*n hot! :-) Anyway after 15 minutes my stock temp gauge is pointing straight up. My coolant temp gauge shows 120-something+ degrees F. So pretty quickly the coolant gets warm however the oil takes longer. The stock temp gauge won't move even if my coolant is showing 210+ degrees on my aftermarket gauge. So that thing is nearly useless, it is a good indicator when something has gone horribly wrong with the cooling system though. What is this part and should there be any voltage on these nuts/studs? thanks for the help both for that given and in the future. Carey My guess would be that you blew the 50A fusible link in the trunk. The symptoms you describe match what my '87 325i did when mine corroded away. If I remember this right, the battery is in the trunk and has two feeds to the engine compartment. One is a 0 or 00 size cable that runs the starter and feeds the entire fuse box and the other is a 10ga or so wire that feeds the ECU/ignition directly. The large cable is not fused at all and the smaller cable has a 50A fuse in the trunk (about two feet from the battery, taped to the large cable). Both these cables end up on a terminal block on the firewall. If you check this terminal block you should have 12V on both terminals. If you don't, find out why. If you do, watch the voltage on the ECU feed while cranking. If it keeps dropping to less than 11 volts or so look for a high resistance somewhere in the line. -- Joe -- Joseph M. I understand that this is a variable power assist and more help should occur at slower speeds. Indeed, this had always been the case prior to a recent power steering fluid and reservoir change, detailed below: After about 185,000, I decided to finally change the power steering fluid and the reservoir with built in filter. I used RedLine D4-ATF (Dexron III equiv.) During the fluid change, I removed the banjo fitting at the output hose of the power steering pump and moved the wheels lock to lock to flush out as much fluid as possible. When I was finished, I noticed a small metal cylinder, about an inch long with a passage through it, on the garage floor. It may be some restrictor, but I couldn't tell from where it came, either a hose or perhaps the p/s pump and pushed it out when I moved the wheels back and forth, or if in fact it even came from the steering. [Weeks before I opened the banjo fitting, I had emptied the reservoir several times and refilled the reservoir - that is when I first noticed the reduction in power assist.] Could the new fluid at this high mileage loosen some gunk that clogs the pump? Does that restrictor belong in the pump or either line from the reservoir? Any suggestions how to diagnose the problem? The BMW UUC Digest Volume 4 : Issue 62 : text Format Messages in this Issue: Pads, pads, pads -- Date: Sat, 22 Mar 2008 20:02:51 -0700 From: Steve Albrecht [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: bmwuucdigest@uucdigest.com Subject: Pads, pads, pads Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mark wrote If you're a beginning track driver, the stock pads are fine. Once you're a high-C/low-B (in BMW CCA-speak), you're in need of something a bit more aggressive. Learning to brake correctly helps, but it just forestalls the day a bit ... I agree with Mark completely. I was on stock pads until I moved into the 'B' run group and found myself lagging a bit compared to others in the group. FWIW, I initially put R4 pads on all four wheels. Then one time I tried leaving the stock pads on the rear, and there was no noticeable difference. I guess that just points out how extensive the weight transfer to the front is when braking between the #2 and #1 markers. Also on the money is Mark's mention of learning how to brake correctly, and this is also an extremely big deal. I attended a dinner a while back with the entire PTG cadre of drivers in attendance, and one of the biggest topics of conversation was proper braking. Hans Stuck said that learning how to brake (and more specifically, how to get off the brakes) was the most important aspect of racecraft. Bill Auberlin and Boris Said both said that they learned how to brake from Hans. Using Hans' techniques allowed me to use the same set of Porterfields and PowerSlot rotors for five seasons of at least a dozen track days per season. This is in my 4000 pound 540 folks. This all supports the premise that the driver skill level is far more important than the machinery. Attend track schools and autocross events in your box stock car for a while before you start throwing money at upgrade parts. Your money will go a lot further adding skills to your personal toolbox. Then when your instructors tell you that you are 'out of car', (and they will do that) it's time to do things like suspension, R compound tires, and brakes. Do one mod at a time, and learn how to drive with that upgrade. Then add another upgrade. It's a lot of fun learning how to drive a 'new' car all over again. Afterall, this is the entire point isn't it? To have fun. Cheers Steve Albrecht -- End of [bmwuucdigest] digest(1 messages) **

You will have to remove the exhaust and differential to perform this procedure, but the tools make the actual bushing removal and installation VERY easy! This tool has been used once to remove and install all three differential bushings on an E39 M5. Technic Tool's price for this tool is $450 plus shipping-which I know is expensive, but once you actually see the quality of the pieces you will understand why it costs what it does. I will sell the tool for $350 plus shipping, or I am willing to rent it out for a maximum of one week per rental. The rental costs are $90 for the actual rental, plus a mandatory deposit of $350 that will be fully refunded once the tool is returned to me after the maximum one week of use and is in the same condition as how it was sent to the renter. Any pieces that are missing or broken will be will be paid for out of the deposit with the remainder refunded. All shipping charges to you and back to me are to be paid person renting the tool. I had thought long and hard on the recreational books of my formative times and have looked to obtain four or so of the more memorable car books of my youth. I have located T-Model Tommy and the Red Car books. I am still seeking and need some help regarding titles and authors of: 1) A book in which an over-the-road trucker buys a Morgan and races it, losing a fender in a shunt and getting the help of another trucker who helps him get the replacement fender in time to compete. Character's name was an unpronounceable Eastern European name until his family had it translated to Fletcher as the original name described someone who puts feathers on arrows. 2) A young kid who wants to make his life personalizing cars for show and competition and nearly achieves success with a creation in pink with copper trim until a tragic accident leaves him in the river with his girlfriend as he dies. 3) A similar book (or maybe the same book) in which the prominent car is a car with a thin sheet metal top that retracts into the trunk but fails to protect the heroine's head in a crash due to its flimsy construction. Think the 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner. 4) Book or books of a similar era in which the main character is involved in racing closed wheel purpose built race cars (my mind says McLarens and Porsches ) in which the main character races with near empty fuel tank while he himself is fuel soaked. Others from that era that I might not recall? Anyone? Thanks muchly, Ed Electroshock can be a wonderful thing. I recommend it. Don U Yahoo! The Active Steering option, which strikes me as yet another BMW solution to a problem nobody was having - iDrive anyone? - does have an electronic control unit. BTW, I see nothing wrong with electronic assist. It's not what you do, it's how you do it. In that context my Mini Cooper S has a mixed system: the pump is electrically driven (but not electronically controlled) and the rack is a conventional hydraulic unit. Looks like the best advice on the tranny is : if it ain't broke (at this time) don't fix it. It works well when we test drove the car, and as my daughter is buying the car on a loan from the bank of mom and dad and in no financial position to repair a tranny, the lowest risk approach seems to leave well enough alone - hopefully it will last long enough for her to gain some financial traction and reserves. She's a single mom struggling to make ends meet on a low income job and this car seems a better long term choice at $5K, as a 77K mile 2000 year Neon at the same price. Plus I seem, over the years starting about 1986, to have brought my #2 son, my wife, and now #1 daughter over to BMWs! Converting the family, one member and one car at a time (?) The BMW UUC Digest Volume 3 : Issue 252 : text Format Messages in this Issue: [Fwd: Love it!] -- Date: Sun, 03 Sep 2006 19:34:42 -0400 From: KMS- Brett Anderson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: uuc Digest bmwuucdigest@uucdigest.com Subject: [Fwd: Love it!] Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is true -- http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/wichman.asp Professor Wichman E-mail Claim: A Michigan professor sent an e-mail telling Muslim students to leave the country Status: True. Professor Wichman E-mail Hooray for Michigan State University (The Spartans) and Professor Wichman! Well, what do we have here. Looks like a small case of some people being able to dish it out, but not take it. Let's start at the top. The story begins at Michigan State University with a mechanical engineering professor named Indrek Wichman. Wichman sent an e-mail to the Muslim Student's Association. The e-mail was in response to the students' protest of the Danish cartoons that portrayed the Prophet Muhammad as a terrorist. The group had complained the cartoons were hate speech. --- Enter Professor Wichman. In his e-mail, he said the following: Dear Moslem Association: As a professor of Mechanical Engineering here at MSU I intend to protest your protest. I am offended not by cartoons, but by more mundane things like beheadings of civilians, cowardly attacks on public buildings, suicide murders, murders of Catholic priests (the latest in Turkey!), burnings of Christian churches, the continued persecution of Coptic Christians in Egypt, the imposition of Sharia law on non-Muslims, the rapes of Scandinavian girls and women (called whores in your culture), the murder of film directors in Holland, and the rioting and looting in Paris, France. This is what offends me, a soft-spoken person and academic, and many, many, many of my colleagues. I counsel you dissatisfied, aggressive, brutal, and uncivilized slave-trading Moslems to be very aware of this as you proceed with your infantile protests. If you do not like the values of the West -- see the 1st Amendment -- you are free to leave. I hope for God's sake that most of you choose that option. Please return to your ancestral homelands and build them up yourselves instead of troubling Americans. Cordially, I. S. Wichman Professor of Mechanical Engineering --- As you can imagine, the Muslim group at the university didn't like this too well. They're demanding that Wichman be reprimanded and mandatory diversity training for faculty and a seminar on hate and discrimination for freshman. Now the Michigan chapter of CAIR has jumped into the fray. CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, apparently doesn't believe that the good professor had the right to express his opinion. For its part, the university is standing its ground. They say the e-mail was private, and they don't intend to publicly condemn his remarks. That will probably change. Wichman says he never intended the e-mail to be made public and wouldn't have used the same strong language if he'd known it was going to get out. How's the left going to handle this one? If you're in favor of the freedom of speech, as in the case of Ward Churchill, will the same protections be demanded for Indrek Wichman? I doubt it. Send this to your friends, and ask them to do the same. Tell them to keep passing it around until the whole country gets it. We are in a war. This political correctness stuff is getting old. ___ Bubbas mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/bubbas -- End of [bmwuucdigest] digest(1 messages) **

We bought a 2003 525iTa about a year ago, and one of the first things that impressed me about its cargo carrying capacity was going to pick up a pair of Recaros I'd bought for the M3. In their huge original cartons they fit nicely in the back of the 525iT (rear seats folded down) with plenty of space to spare. Also makes an excellent track tire hauler! I've been agreeably surprised with the performance, considering what I'm normally used to driving (E36 M3 and Mini Cooper S). Originally I'd wanted to buy a friend's 540iTa/Sport Package, which of course is a real Q-car and a blast to drive. I thought the 525 with an autobox would be a dog, but not so at all. Sure, the car is no rocket, but the 5-speed auto is very responsive; I never even bother use the Steptronic functions. The M54 engine has more torque than it ought to for the displacement and is happy to rev when needed. The end result is that it's easy to keep up with, away from or ahead of traffic, depending on your mood. The E39 is a distinct step up from the E46 both in terms of interior space, especially width, and build quality. Really nice car for highway trips. It is in the right (pass side) rear of the engine bay. You'll know it when you see it. Be careful you don't destroy the grommets that hold it to and isolate it from the chassis as they are $20+ each! Neil Deshpande *** kristopher olson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ok-the question is regarding a check engine light that says secondary air system- low flow.
