Yes, you pay a LOT for the convience of using a UPS store and other
shippers. Their mark-up is generally 30 to 50% over the UPS charges. It
didn't take me long to find that, out so I got my own UPS account and get a
rate even lower than what the UPS on-line calculator gives me. You can
print your own lables (prepaid) and then use the UPS store as a drop-off.
I've been doing that for quite a while.

battle with UPS to get insurance payment, even threatening legal action.

Now, just yesterday I was informed by and shown pictures of a package I
sent postal service, thinking maybe they would be more responsible. A Swan
500 and power supply. Sent in two separate boxes encased in peanuts
obtained from UHaul, which has a very good reputation for not treating
their shipments like footballs during the playoffs. ALso had them wrapped
in bubble wrap and the boxes marked FRAGILE and the post office indicating
so on the tracking documents. Arrived like the UPS boxes ... looking like
other 50 to 100 lb boxes had been dropped on top of mine. Buyer still in
the process of determining damage to the rig and if it is fatal damage or
minor.

My point is .. and my belief is .. I don't give a DAMN for ANY of the
shippers excuses. I pay them for one thing.. to SHIP a box from point A to
point B, and for that box to arrive in one piece just like when I dropped
it off for shipping. Especially when it is indicated that it is fragile. I
hope to hell no one EVER tries shipping glass glasses because I firmly
believe they would arrive as a pile of glass shards in the box. And, I do
not appreciate being told by a shipper that "it was not damaged during
shipping." THAT crap is an insult to someone's intelligence

I don't know the solution, except maybe to take the equipment to a place
that will absolutely fill the box with foam insulation and it becomes a
block that has to be cut away when it arrives. Even then, I'm sure the
shipper would find some way to make it arrive looking like it had been
dropped from a B52 at 20,000 feet. Remember when they used to tout the
durability of Collins gear, saying they could be dropped from a plane and
still be operational after landing. I dont think even a Collins KWM2 can
survive the incompetence of the three major shippers. The employees have
no respect or care for anything they handle. It seems to be toss it on the
truck from 20 feet away, stack it 10 high with 50 lbs on top of each and
then toss it into the driveway. Sometimes, I'm surprised they even get out
of the truck when they deliver a package instead of just tossing it out
the door and driving away. They must get out of the truck if they have to
get a signature.

I have shipped and received many large and heavy boatanchors over the last

Packing and shipping heavy gear is a LOT of work. I know because I've been
selling off years of accumulated gear that I will never get to. You have to
price it on the lower end of "reasonable," and be willing to pack it. I
don't want my XYL to have to deal with this. It is so much work that the
simplest route is the landfill. That is especially true of parts like
transformers. Taking things to the "UPS Store" and having them pack it is
prohibitively expensive unless something is really valuable.

Having said that, I still can't help myself from picking up mor bargains.

Will the seller ship the gear

Seems lately that "non-shipping" is a big issue with some. Maybe even
this particular situation.

I've recently been involved in an SK estate where non-shipping was a big
turn off to one individual. Just wanting to see if this case is

Something happened with the last list I sent. Here is the complete
message:

The daughter continues to inventory what her dad left behind with his
passing, but here is an updated list

I've put together from what I've seen so far. For those who have
inquired, the equipment is located in Toledo, Ohio.

She is more interested in getting the items to those who will use them,
instead of buying them just to flip them.

I am simply trying to help her out because she knows almost nothing about
ham radio and is asking my help in identifying items that are ham related
and what my thoughts are on their potential. She has already declined an
estate buyer offer for everything because she knows the buyer would just
double prices and flip them.

Part of the problem is that her dad was also into stereo equipment, so we
have to single them out from the ham related stuff. Her dad was employed
in the electronics field for many years and has some equipment that goes
back to the 60s, and comes forward to some of the most recent stuff sold
like an IC 7600.

I'm sure there will be more coming, but here's what I have seen so far...

Heil Pro 40 microphone

Icom IC7600 (still has the plastic over part of the front panel)

Yaesu FT 101B

Viking Valiant

BK 1471B scope

Icom IC-R70

Grundig satellit 800 Millenium shortwave receiver

Icom IC-R1 scanner which covers up to 1300 mhz

IC VR500 receiver which covers up to 2600 mhz and retailed for $995 new

Gonset GSB 101 amp

Yaesu FL2100B amp

Viking Invader

Tempo 2020 transceiver

A number of new in box Wilson 1000 mobile antennas

Yaesu FLDX 2000 amp

NCL 2000 amp

Siltronix Model 90 VFO

Arrow 6 meter ground plane GP52 antenna new in package

Grundig Satellit 750 shortwave receiver

Galaxy 100FC frequency counter

Viking Challenger

Kenwood SM230 station monitor

Radio Shack DX402 and DX394 receivers

Adonis AM 7500E microphone

Kenwood PS52 power supply

KLV 1000 amplifier (this is a new one, but I've told her most hams
consider them junk)

Kenwood TS520SE

A number of very good condition D-104 microphones

Midland 22-50 microphone test base

Grundig Satellit 750 shortwave receiver

Again, no prices have been set. If youre interested, she is more than
willing to negotiate so she can get these to people who want to use them
rather than resell them. She's already turned down an estate purchaser
because she knows he would just double prices and resell them.

Re: [Boatanchors] How to remove nicotine

2016-08-22 Thread George Babits
The "dryer fabric" simply covers up one smell with another. A fairly large
percentage of the population is allergic to the chemicals used in the
scented dryer sheets. So, covering up the smoker smell with annother ,
maybe worse, smell may not be the greatest idea in the world. There are
cleaners that will remove the smoker smell, but I'm not sure which (maybe
409?). I'll be facing "de-smelling" a 75S-3C and 32S-3A this winter, so
really interested in solutions.

Hi Don,
I don't see any answers on the reflector, maybe you got some direct.
I've found that in general the nicotine crud is water soluble. I've used
water with some hand dishwashing liquid, and a bit of Murphy' Oil Soap for
good measure. Paint brush, tooth brush, etc. for swabbing. Don't think
that will get out all the smell, tho'. Try putting some dryer fabric
softening sheets inside, put it in a plastic bag for a week or so, and
that usually helps.

Re: [Boatanchors] Any Builders out There?

2015-11-03 Thread George Babits

Hey Wilson,

It aint't over till they start shoveling dirt in your face.

Age is just a number. I plan to keep building transmitters and stuff until
I figure out what I want to be when I grow up. Now that I'm retired I don't
seem to have much time for building or operating. I just bought a bunch of
boat anchor military gear from WW-II. By a bunch I mean the first load was
4 tons; and there are probably 3 more loads yet to haul. This sort of
enterprize keeps me thinking young. My XYL is helping me with all this gear
and will know what to do with it when I finally grow up.

By the way, my AM rig is a single 813 modulated by a pair of 572B's.
Collins PTO into a highly modified TMC SBE-2, driving an 807, which drives
the 813. It works so well that I haven't tackled another transmitter yet.
I spend a lot of time restoring what I'm using. Now I'll higrade a few
pieces of my treasure trove, get them on the air, and sell the rest.

Apparently I have suddenly become old, or at least realized that I have.
I know dozens of hams, but I think I am the only one actually using
anything HB, with the

exception of a nice 1929 Hartley or two.

A good bit of my stuff was built (or misbuilt) by others, but I’ve rescued
it from oblivion and made it work properly.
I enjoy making things work more than I like fighting pileups, but I do do
some DXing and some ragchewing.

So who’s out there with HB gear, TX or RX?
Who uses 4-125s, 813s, 810s, 807s, 866s, 814s, 6AG7s, 6L6s, or V-70s?
Who’s afraid of their power supply?
Any receiver builders (my weak point)?

Along with my boatanchors (Signal Shifters, 310-Bs, HROs, Drakes,
Hammarlund, Heaths) I have some real ship anchors!
Also transformers I can’t pick up and gobs of small transformers and
chokes.

Anyone with ideas about how to get rid of this stuff (when the time comes)
so my heirs won’t have to?

Is there a retro equipment builder’s/operators group or list out there
anywhere?

I could use some sympathy.

Bill,

Over the years I've had over a dozen BC-221/LM frequency meters. All were
still accurate. Some of the crystals for the calibrator have been bad, but
other than that, they all still worked just fine. They are also very
stable. The calibration book should always have the same serial number as
the SN of the frequency meter or things won't be quite the same.

That's the first rack mounted one I've ever seen. If it is homebrewed it
was a heck of a good job.

I ever found a still boxed Bc221 or LM.
Is it still accurate? Can you check it WWV perhaps or a well calibrated
crystal calibrator to see if it still agrees with the book?
First, how close is the crystal calibrator before making any adjustments
to it, and then after setting the crystal calibrator
how closely does the book match. I had always been amazed by the precision
