Is this true? In any case, I have had many leaky ones, one of which caused
RFI whenever the transmitter was plugged in, and others that caused a hot

Old farm houses didn't have ground paths in the living rooms.
So, we were probably safer there than in the barnyard with a couple of

2018-12-19 Thread The Pollacks
I have had a couple of claims over the years where they sent the damaged item
back to me. Perhaps it's a matter of how much the insurance value was. In the
case of a 75A4, which probably was a high dollar value claim, they have a
department to try to recoup some value. In the case of $100 or $200 claims,
it's possible that they don't want to try to dispose. Just speculating.

Re: [Boatanchors] Shipping damage

2018-11-28 Thread The Pollacks
I avoid this problem by not shipping (or receiving) any unit weighing more
than about 30 pounds. Admittedly, this is easier for me than for many,
because I live in densely populated Southern California, with many millions
of people within a couple of hours drive and frequent and well attended swap
meets and flea markets so most items can be bought and sold fairly easily.

Many of our boatanchors are too heavy and delicate to be shipped safely
without wooden crates and specialized packaging, so I just won't do it!
When they were new, they were factory packed in specially built cartons.
Heavy kits, like Heath amps, sometimes had the transformers packed
separately. Other heavy kits, like the DX100, did not have heavy
transformers on the chassis when shipped, so less danger of shipping. Take
'em all to Dayton!

Yes, you pay a LOT for the convience of using a UPS store and other
shippers. Their mark-up is generally 30 to 50% over the UPS charges. It
didn't take me long to find that, out so I got my own UPS account and get a

rate even lower than what the UPS on-line calculator gives me. You can
print your own lables (prepaid) and then use the UPS store as a drop-off.
I've been doing that for quite a while.

Re: [Boatanchors] trashed package resolution

2018-11-23 Thread The Pollacks
I ship UPS and FedEx in my business frequently. In general, the packages
arrive intact and on time. We have had several instances where we needed to
file claims. In some of those, the claims were arbitrarily denied. (One
package had been pierced by a forklift, and the adjuster reported that the
box was not damaged. I suggested to them that the adjuster had to leave his
driving job due to failing eyesight!) In all cases, when I complained, the
claim was approved and paid.
The only exception has been the US Postal Service. When a couple of insured
packages were lost, they encouraged me to wait while they searched. By the
time I lost patience and filed, the 30 day limit for filing claims had
passed!

So, my experience is that the two private carriers will try to avoid
liability, but give up the fight fairly easily, but our government agency
intentionally scams the customer on insurance claims. FWIW

Happy thanksgiving, all!

I had a WWII rifle shipped with "adult signature required" specified by
the shipper.

Fed Ex left it on the neighbor two houses north of me, and forged my
signature. My neighbors were on an extended vacation. By the time the
driver found the box, I had already contacted ATF and the local sheriff.
This got Fed Ex's attention finally.

They must put the drivers under huge pressure to hit and run.

I got a manual as recently as Friday, but can't access now.

Rather than complain and rail, I'd like to express the deepest appreciation
for those who have voluntarily provided this service for so many years. My
hope is that enough volunteers will come forward with offers to do some
work, rather than just offering suggestions. I have virtually no computer

And, for a couple of you, not everything can be blamed on government, Obama,

BAMA Development

As the submissions of manuals grow and grow, I have not been able to keep up

This new site will include multiple administrators. We will soon have a

the new site to be online in the spring of 2016.
