[Boston.pm] Social Meeting, Tuesday, Aug 11

2015-07-26 Thread Ronald J Kimball
As Uri mentioned on the announcement list, we would like to have a social
meeting on Tuesday, Aug 11, so that I can say goodbye to all of you,
because I am moving to Minneapolis next month!

We're planning to hold it at the Sunset Grill and Tap in Allston. Please
RSVP here so Uri can get a head count and reserve space for us.

As an extra enticement, I will be bringing some unclaimed Perl Monger
shirts from 2006.

(It's been a while since I made it to a meeting, so, for those of you who
may not remember me, I was the leader of Boston.pm from 1999 to 2008. :)

http://jobs.perl.org/job/15674

Software Engineer/Data Analyst at a small, profitable web services company

MaxMind (www.maxmind.com) is looking for a smart, mathematically minded
person to help make the Internet a safer place to do business. You are
either a programmer with deep analytical skills or a
mathematician/statistician/scientist with a programming bent. You will be
working on data analysis in order to improve our fraud detection service.
You'll be analyzing huge data sets to identify patterns of fraud, doing
quality assurance work on our fraud detection system, and thinking up new
ways to detect fraud.

We're a small, privately held company (under 20 employees) founded in
2002, and we've been profitable for many years. As an employee of MaxMind,
you'll enjoy the flexibility and autonomy that come with being a member of
a small technical team. Since we are profitable, our focus is on exploring
new ideas and doing things well, rather than rushing work to market. We're
a casual, friendly, results-focused company. We want you to get things
done, but it's also important to have a life outside the office. We won't
be asking you to stay late or pull all-nighters on crazy deadlines.

Transaction fraud detection is a constantly changing field, and our work
is never done. Fraudsters are always looking for new ways to evade
detection, which means we're always looking for new ways to detect them.
Our fraud detection service, minFraud, builds on top of our widely used
GeoIP product, which associates geographical data with individual IP
addresses. We screen half a billion online transactions each year and
provide IP intelligence data to thousands of companies worldwide.

Our office is located in downtown Waltham, MA outside of Boston, five
minutes walk from the nearest commuter rail line and several express bus
lines. While local candidates are preferred, we will consider
telecommuting for an ideal candidate. If you are local, you'll be given a
private office and choice of computer.

The vast bulk of our code base is written in Perl using MySQL and Linux,
with a bit of C where it's needed. We use free software as much as
possible, and we release code back to the community when we can do so.
We're trying to improve the way we do development, and we expect you to
participate in that process. We've recently moved from CVS to Git. We've
just started a practice of doing all work on branches and code reviews.

We're open to applications from both junior and senior applicants. The
salary range for this position starts at $70k for junior level up to $120k
for a more experienced developer.

Minimum Qualifications:

* Ability to work with large data sets, identify patterns, and crunch numbers.
* Prior programming experience, ideally with a scripting language such as
  Perl, PHP, Python, or Ruby.
* Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
* The ability to work with a geographically dispersed team.

To apply, please email your resume to data-engineer-...@maxmind.com as an
attachment or link in PDF, HTML, or plain text format. Resumes in other
formats will not be considered. If you have contributed to any FS/OSS
projects please make sure to highlight that.

Seeking 40 hr / week contract Perl programmer with substantial web
development experience. Successful candidate will work on end-user facing
web applications, data entry interfaces, unit tests, data scrubbing /
loading scripts, and more. The position begins in September.

It's important that you be comfortable with a development process that
begins with a light spec and a chat about features. You would then develop
the first version, and expect to iterate that version based on feedback.
You will NOT be handed a detailed 20-page spec and asked to implement it
exactly. I believe strongly in the importance of unit tests, and I would
expect you to develop a strong suite of tests with each application.

The position is located in Durham, NH, though there is a possibility that
the successful candidate could telecommute two or more days a week after the
first month.

Required Skill-Set:

   - Perl (please don't bother to apply unless you have several years
 full-time experience with Perl)
   - Confidence with HTML::Mason, Class::DBI, HTML::Template,
 CGI::Application, Test::More and AJAX
   - Attention to detail

Desired Skills:

   - Familiarity with CVS and/or SVN
   - Experience coding to Mechanical Turk's API

Contract or permanent position? Contract

Pay Range: $4k - $6k / month

Placement: Directly with the company

Okay, I figured out why this code is so slow compared to mine. You're
iterating over the words and then the prefixes. Each time through the
inner loop, perl has to compile the regex: n*m regex compilations. If you
swap the loops, then perl compiles the regex for each prefix just once: m
regex compilations.

Original:

real 24m26.004s
user 24m13.461s
sys0m3.160s

Swapped:

real 3m3.885s
user 3m3.342s
sys0m0.280s

Note that swapping the loops means you may need to unique the list of found
words, but that's very fast to do. Alternatively, you could precompile the
regexes using qr//.

search I think brute force would be too slow. It would take O (n*n) time.

Because I believe in measuring performance I actually wrote the brute force
code. It only uses 2500 strings to strart the search, rather than the 7500
I plan to use. In fact it is very slow. It is still running 15 minutes
later, and I can tell it is only half done.

I'm very surprised it is so slow. I wrote code to test the brute force
approach and it searches ~250,000 words for 2500 strings in just 3 minutes.

Alternatively, can someone recommend another perl module for prefix
searching on a moderately large set of strings, e.g. trie or suffix tree or
suffix array, etc.. It must be reliable and easy to use.

Another option would be a dictionary tree, in which each node is a single
letter, so each word is represented by a path through the tree. I don't
know how suitable it would be for this purpose. It is a cool structure
though. :)

From: Uri Guttman
Subject: Job: Perl/Admin Intern

Hi all,

I finally can hire the intern I have deserved for my entire career!

This is an ideal opportunity for a college student or someone who needs
Perl experience to do some interesting work. There is no on-call aspect
so don't worry about 3am calls.

Please forward this to anyone you think might be interested. September
is here and there must be some student type who you know who would want
this job. MIT students are most welcome!

Rate: $10-20/hour DOE + mentoring from a Perl Guru
(possible bonuses of Best Friends Cocoa mix! :)

Location: mostly off site but probably some pair work at my place in
Arlington

Hours: about 20/month but it can vary

Duration: at least 6 months and probably longer

I need someone to assist me in a wide range of Perl and admin
tasks. Some of these are one time projects and others are on-going. Here
are some of them:

Improving and adding tests to Perl modules

Writing and improving various Perl programs

Editing and writing POD and documentation

Editing and writing templates and content for web sites and related
projects (CSS skills a plus)

Editing and managing wikis

Searching and collecting info from various web sources (manual work, not
crawling)

Setting up off-site backup (probably with rsync.net)

Helping with source control (using git)

Desired skills:

Beginning to Intermediate Perl

Admin stuff (setting up servers, services, source control, etc.)

Linux with OSX a plus (no winblows!)

Good English Skills

Quick Learner (RTFM!)

You don't need to know all the needed skills if you are a quick learner
and a good worker. I will be reviewing and editing all you work before
it gets integrated and you will get very useful feedback. All your work
will be acknowledged in the appropriate places.

I will gladly provide recommendations to whomever lands this job and
does well. And you will learn more about programming Perl than any class
you could possibly take.

Send your resume to [EMAIL PROTECTED] in plain text, HTML or PDF. If
you send it in doc/word I will ignore it since it means you can't follow
the first request correctly.

Thanks,

Uri

A client has an opening for a combination sysadmin and Perl
developer. It is about 30% admin work and 70% Perl hacking. It is a
virtual company and the job is 100% telecommute. They also need some
more Perl developers.

The company provides web development for a large retail company.

The admin work is a typical broad spectrum of admin tasks: setting up
new machines, apache configuration, user management, raid disk recovery,
etc. There are about 100 servers split 80% Solaris and 20% linux all in
colocation facilities with remote console access.

They have a primary admin who needs a partner and someone to back him up
(vacations, some coverage, crunch time, etc.). He handles most of the
emergency calls but this job may need to handle some.

The Perl work is web application development and also some admin
tools. They use templates and have many back end services for the 100+
websites they manage.

Pay is $40-70/hour (DOE), full time, long term contract on 1099.

I have placed 8 Perl developers there and they also need a few more
solid developers (no admin work). The pay range is the same as for the
admin/dev job.

We are looking for a detail-oriented engineer to lead our Quality Assurance
team. This is not your typical QA role; the chief areas of responsibility
are in automated test definition and product feature clarification,
focusing on correctness, completeness and usability. QA must be proactive
not just in ensuring that the software works as defined, but that it is the
best possible product. This role does not primarily involve writing code,
but development experience is valuable for understanding classes of hazards
and solutions.

We're specifically looking for a QA tools engineer. This is someone who can
write and maintain a complex test automation infrastructure. Think Perl
coding, not WinRunner. If you are not a Perl coder - not just scripting -
do not bother to respond to this. We are looking for a Perl coder.

This is a hands-on position; the team lead will oversee the daily
activities of the QA group while continuing to perform most duties of a
member of the team.

The Lead QA works in a small team to ensure the correctness and usability
of our management interfaces, secure storage protocols, file systems,
routing and synchronization algorithms and tools to control a self-managing
network of servers. Automated tests are specified by QA, but implemented by
development. QA also works with product management to ensure coverage and
completeness of new product features.

A solid understanding of testing methodologies for web-based applications,
as well as excellent communication skills, are required. An understanding
of storage systems, file systems, and fault tolerance is desirable.
Experience in Linux, Unix and Windows is required. Knowledge of Extreme
Programming methodology is desirable. Language experience in Perl, Java or
C++ is required.

Requirements:

* Extremely rigorous attention to detail
* Clear and precise communications skills
* Assertive ownership of product quality
* Experience creating detailed automated acceptance test plans
* Experience in tools for testing web-based applications
* Experience working in a small-team environment
* Experience working on challenging large-scale software engineering projects
* Familiarity with both Windows and Unix environments
* Familiarity with software development concepts

Desirable experience:

* Record of delivering stable, reliable projects
* Experience in usability testing
* Experience with distributed systems and common faults
* Experience with fault-tolerant and highly-available systems

This is a permanent role.

I am a recruiter - I have been working with this company for seven years
and have made many placements with them.

The role is in Cambridge.

The company is a storage company focusing on sensitive information storage.

Pay Range - 100 - 120k.

NOTE: I also have standing orders to recruit ANY strong OOPerl developers
for their development team - these guys hire the best and are always willing
to talk with strong Perl developers. Anyone interested should send me their
resume as a Word attachment. Feel free to call me for further information.

Re: [Boston.pm] job postings

2008-06-30 Thread Ronald J Kimball
I can see the potential conflict in interest in having someone who does
recruiting work handling the job postings. Obviously it is a concern to
some of our members.

Very few job postings I received were rejected. I often send them back to
the submitter for additional info. I reformatted most of the job postings
myself to make them more readable (especially ones that were sent as HTML).

I posted job postings from my employers a few times. I made sure they met
the usual requirements.

Personally, I like having job postings be vetted because it ensures that
each posting will have certain relevant information.

The current job posting guidelines were adopted by popular vote years ago.
Bill could call for another vote if we want to revise the guidelines.

I've included the current guidelines below, for convenience.

Ronald

Job postings may not be posted directly to the list. Instead, job postings

When I send a job posting to the list, the Subject header will include the

Guidelines for job postings:

1. Perl must be a primary aspect of the job.

2. The job must be located in the greater Boston area.

3. The following information should be included in the job posting:
   Required skill-set
   Contract or permanent position?
 Pay range, for contract positions
 Incentives, for permanent positions
Placement through a recruiter, or directly with the company?
Location, and whether telecommuting is available

Fellow members of Boston Perl Mongers,

I've served as your facilitator for nine years, after taking over from
founder Chris Nandor. I'm now finding that I no longer have the time or
energy to serve as facilitator. I am therefore pleased to announce that I am
handing over leadership of Boston Perl Mongers to Bill Ricker.

Bill has been a regular at our meetings for a long time, and recently has
been helping me plan the tech meetings. I'm excited to have him put his
skills and experience to even greater work for us.

I know that Bill intends to share some of the responsibilities of leading
our group. We're already off to a good start, with people chipping in to
make sure the recent tech meeting went smoothly. I'm sure he'll tell us
more about his plans shortly.

Thank you all for your participation and support these last nine years, and
please join me in welcoming Bill Ricker as the new facilitator of Boston
Perl Mongers.

Ronald

P.S. I will still come to meetings when I can, and I'll help Bill with one
aspect or another of running things, as needed.

[Boston.pm] Summer of Perl -- call for student proposals

2008-03-18 Thread Ronald J Kimball
- Forwarded message from Eric Wilhelm -

The Perl Foundation is participating in Google's 2008 Summer of Code(tm)
and we have a lot of capable, willing mentors looking forward to working
with some talented, driven students. So, we would like you to help
find those students (and quickly -- the students must apply before
March 31st.)

This is a rare opportunity for students to get a chance to get a paid
summer of hacking on exciting projects like Parrot, Perl 6, Moose,
Jifty, SVK, Catalyst, or their very own Perl modules or applications.
It also brings new talent into the community and gives the student a
hefty real world experience with a knowledgable mentor. Further,
employers love to see this sort of demonstration of teamwork, handling
deadlines, communication skills, resourcefulness and etc.

We're looking for promising students who are interested in open source
(or maybe you know someone who *should* be interested in open source.)
Knowledge of Perl is optional if the project is Parrot-related. The
student doesn't need to be an expert in the problem domain (after all,
learning is part of the process), but should bring a big pile of
creativity, problem-solving skills, and determination.

Students should review the page of suggested projects, but are
encouraged to bring their own proposals (those are often the best.)
The most important first step is getting in touch with the community
and discussing their project idea with potential mentors.

  http://www.perlfoundation.org/perl5/index.cgi?gsoc2008_projects

Additional information and links can be found here.

  http://www.perlfoundation.org/perl5/index.cgi?gsoc2008

Google has posted some flyers if you happen to have a university
bulletin board or hallway handy:

  http://code.google.com/p/google-summer-of-code/wiki/GsocFlyers

Additional info:

  http://code.google.com/soc/2008/
  http://code.google.com/soc/2008/faqs.html

(Note that google has particular requirements to do with the fact that
they are paying the students. The student must be able to show their
eligibility regarding enrollment and employability.)

Remember, the Perl community draws talent from many fields, so if you
came to Perl from a non-computer-science major and still have contacts
in that department from your university, it is probably worth
mentioning to them.

Boston.pm will have a tech meeting on Tuesday, February 12, at MIT,
in building E51, room 376 (directions below), starting at 7:15pm.

Martin Owens will be giving a presentation on one of his modules,
Data::Validate::XSD.

http://search.cpan.org/~doctormo/Data-Validate-XSD-1.03/

This module allows the definition of complex data structures and allows
validation against them. It is based on the W3C XSD definition, and does
not use XML. Features include mirrored-errors (which describe failures in
terms of their structural position and the effect on the parents) and
minimal dependencies. Use cases include validation data sent to a webpage,
validating data used in object creation, and validating XML parsed data.

[Boston.pm] Tech Meeting Followup

2008-01-11 Thread Ronald J Kimball
27 people came to Tuesday's tech meeting.

Mitchell Charity gave a brief presentation on his idea to quickly bootstrap
a Perl 6 implementation via Ruby - see his recent post to the list for more
details.

I gave an informal presentation on some of the new features in Perl 5.10,
particularly smart matching with the ~~ operator, given (the new switch
statement), and named captures in regular expressions. I made heavy use of
Bill Ricker's advent calendar entry, Gabor Szabo's micro-articles, and the
new manpages, particularly perldelta.

http://use.perl.org/articles/07/12/26/1628211.shtml
http://perldoc.perl.org/perldelta.html

(If anyone has figured out what /regex/ ~~ /regex/ does, let us know!)

Finally, Bernardo Rechea showed us the CD ripping program he has written
that advantage of some of the new features to parse info for classical
music CDs.

[Boston.pm] No tech meeting tomorrow

2007-12-10 Thread Ronald J Kimball
Hey all,

I am afraid there will not be a tech meeting tomorrow - I have not
lined up a speaker, and in fact I have a conflict tomorrow night.

Obviously, I've been having trouble keeping on top of the tech meetings
lately. Perhaps there's someone who would like to help out with managing
the meetings, particularly with looking for people to give presentations?
Please email me if you're interested.

Happy Holidays,
Ronald

P.S. You can still help out with this year's Perl Advent calendar:

[Boston.pm] Tech Meeting Followup

2007-09-12 Thread Ronald J Kimball
17 people came to yesterday's tech meeting.

I started off the meeting by telling people about ack, a powerful
alternative to grep written in Perl. Its features include automatically
skipping of uninteresting files (backup files, revision control
directories, etc.), highlighting the found text, and the ability to use
Perl regular expressions.

http://petdance.com/ack/

I showed a recent xkcd strip that mentioned Perl, and Mason then told us
about the webcomic Everybody Loves Eric Raymond.

http://www.xkcd.com/312/
http://geekz.co.uk/lovesraymond/

Sean Quinlan then gave us all a good introduction to HTML::Mason, a
high-performance, dynamic web site authoring system.

http://search.cpan.org/perldoc?HTML::Mason

We continued with open discussions on:
Perl job opportunities and the lack of experienced Perl programmers;
Other ways CIDC might want to sponsor Boston Perl Mongers;
Academic interest in Perl (see Uri's perl vs. MIT post);
The state of Perl6.

Mitchell Charity concluded the meeting by showing off a laptop from the One
Laptop Per Child project and telling us a little about the project.

http://laptop.org/

Refreshments at this meeting were sponsored by CIDC. Thanks CIDC!
They're still looking to hire Perl developers...

http://www.cidc.com/

Also thanks to Sean for his presentation, and to Mason for letting me
piggyback on his internet connection.

And finally, thanks to everyone who came! I was worried because of the
short notice, but it turned out to be a good meeting.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 9. Let me know if you would
like to give a presentation.

[Boston.pm] Tech Meeting Tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept 11, at MIT

2007-09-10 Thread Ronald J Kimball
Yes, there is a meeting this month! Sorry about the short notice!

Boston.pm will have a tech meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, September 11, at MIT,
in building E51, room 372 (directions below), starting at 7:15pm.

Sean Quinlan will be giving an introductory talk on HTML::Mason, a
high-performance, dynamic web site authoring system.

Bill Ricker suggested several possible round-table topics for the second
half of the meeting:
 * Conference de-brief / conference slides on web
 * Perl IDEs
 * restrategize New England Perl Workshop
 * plan Perl Advent Calendar for 2008

I learned about at least one cool thing at OSCON that I'll tell the group
about. Let us know if you'd like to participate in a discussion on the
above topics.

RSVP to me if you're planning to attend - rjk-bostonpm(at)tamias.net.
(Also, if you can bring a laptop with wireless connectivity, let me know.
As far as I know, my laptop is still shut out of the MIT network.)

Pizza and soda for this meeting will be sponsored by Cambridge Interactive
Development Corp. Thanks CIDC!

Directions to MIT, Building E51:

Building E51 (the Tang Center) is located at the corners of Amherst and
Wadsworth Streets in Cambridge.

http://whereis.mit.edu/map-jpg?mapterms=e51

Directions by T:

Take the Red Line to Kendall. Building E51 is right around the corner from
the T stop. From the Inbound side, facing into Main Street, turn right
(toward Boston) and walk down the block. Turn right on Wadsworth Street
and walk to the corner of Amherst Street. Building E51 is the building
across the street directly in front of you with the metal canopy.

Directions by Car:

General directions provided by MIT:

http://whereis.mit.edu/map-jpg?section=directions

The Boston Linux and Unix user group also meets at E51, so you may find
their directions helpful as well (keeping in mind that we will be meeting
in room 372, not room 315):

Parking Information:

MIT's Amherst Street Lot is adjacent to the building:

http://whereis.mit.edu/map-jpg?selection=P4Parking=go

Officially, a sticker is required to park in the lot. However, we've been
told unofficially that there is no enforcement after 3pm weekdays, nor on
the weekends. Chances are very slim that cars will be ticketed.
Nonetheless, parking in the lot is at your own risk.

specific format conversion subroutine is defined before I call it (all
the subroutine names will be of the form FormatConv_X2Y) -- is there a
way to do that? In other words, is there a way to find out whether a
subroutine is defined before calling it?

Yes, you can do Cdefined FormatConv_X2Y, with that exact syntax; an
ampersand and no parentheses.

Other options include:

Creating a converter object, and doing
C$converter-can('FormatConv_X2Y').

Storing the subroutines in a hash, and doing
Cexists $format_converters{'X2Y'}.

It looks like Cambridge Brewing Company is the favorite, so that's where
we'll go next week. Announcement to follow.

Keep in mind the other suggestions for the next social meeting! Maybe some
time in September? (If someone wanted to volunteer to oversee organizing
the social meetings that would be great!)
