Tommy had been in a vertex presentation (i.e., head pointing toward the
cervix) for a good 3 months. Then after Catherine was delivered, they
ruptured his amniotic sac, and he decided he'd flip. And the doctor was
trying to flip him back. She finally gave up and hauled him out
feet-first.

Mind you, during the manipulation, I had no anesthesia whatsoever. They
gave me a spinal just before she hauled him out. (At least I didn't have
to feel the episiotomy being *sewn up*)

It depends on how much you like having other people's blood dripped on you. *shudder*

Are they higher on the "EWG!" factor than having the doctor's arm in up
to the elbow without benefit of anesthesia?

Depends on what orifice it is inserted in . . .

Are they higher on the "EWG!" factor than having the doctor's arm in up
to the elbow without benefit of anesthesia?

Look at your hand as it's being mauled. ;)

And a coda to the "don't look down" advice - this is REALLY important in
a Caesarian birth...

I had no trouble with the natural birth of my daughter, it was all so
wondrous I didn't even notice the rest of it, but when Alistair was
"extracted" it all happenned so quickly, calmly and quietly I wasn't
even vaguely expecting it, and the movement attracted my eyes around the
little "screen" thingy.
Mostly I saw a gloved hand raised with a pair of tiny ankles gripped
between finger and thumb, but there was also peripheral view of the rest
of the table.

Yeah, that's bad too. And the accompanying "PLOP" as the placenta is expelled is a
little disturbing too.

The most amazing at the birth of my first child, outside of the blessed event itself,
was that the OB/GYN came into the delivery dressed in white pants and a pastel shirt.
He only draped a light covering over himself for the delivery. The entire place
looked like an abbatoir, yet somehow, he didn't have a drop of blood on him. It was
like he had a force field or something.

Has he been having problems with random electrical discharges in his hand?

I think Catherine had a closer resemblance to Winston Churchill. Tommy
was too broad at some crucial part of the face. :)

I saw a documentary that mentioned some research where babies tended
to look like the relatives of the alleged father's side. It would be some
kind of survival mechanism - we know the mother, but can never
[before DNA testing :-)] know the father.
