[BRLTTY] Restarting brltty via .path service

2023-10-12 Thread Rob Hudson
I have a display connected via USB to serial, so brltty is invoked with
brltty@path.service. But how do you restart that? If I try, I get:
Failed to restart brltty@path.service: Operation refused, unit
brltty@path.service may be requested by dependency only (it is configured to
refuse manual start/stop).
Thanks.

Would it be possible to have the app set the input service on android when you

That's possible. I'm not sure what it would be or how to trace it out, because
I did not have any eyeballs around to read the screen. The problem volumes were
storage volumes and not the main / device.

I'm not sure, because as stated above I did not have eyes to read it. I'm just
curious to wonder if anything changed in brltty's execution/startup that would
make it unable to start in such a circumstance.

[BRLTTY] BRLTTY does not work in emergency shell

2021-08-13 Thread Rob Hudson
BRLTTY 6.3 on arch linux.
The other day there was a problem with some of my fs mounts, and I was kicked
into emergency shell. I am uncertain of when this change took place, but BRLTTY
no longer works there, although it did last year. I have made no changes to the
BRLTTY default arch package. I could not even start it manually by typing
brltty
at (what I assumed) was the command prompt. And of course, I could not ssh in
due to there being no network in emergency shell mode.
What changed in BRLTTY to cause it to stop working in emergency shell?

Sure enough, it's a permissions thing:

/var/lib/brltty/brltty.prefs: Permission denied

actually you need to change prefs file permission too.
if it doesn't help, you need to provide logs.

[BRLTTY] After upgrade, pref menu broken

2021-05-09 Thread Rob Hudson
Brltty 6.3 on arch linux.
If I set hte preferences menu to
"save on exit: yes"
And then exit the preferences menu, the braille display flashes
"not saved"
what's happening? Permissions problem?
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5057 Oct 6 2020 ./lib/brltty/brltty.prefs
Thanks.

Re: [BRLTTY] Custom key bindings

Could it be a permissions issue? Usually when config files aren't being read,
that's the first thing I check.

Subject: [BRLTTY] Custom key bindings

> Hi, and sincere apologies,

I know this has been answered many, many times on this list and David is
probably not happy about yet a new message on this topic, but I can't
seem to find the proper process.

I've finally acquired a small computer running Linux, have installed
BRLTTY (5.6) and now am trying to connect my ActiveBraille (HandyTech).
All is working as expected... except that I don't really like the
default key bindings of the Handytech driver.  No worry!  I had saved
the 'rockers.kti' file to my Dropbox, because I felt I would need it.
So thoughtful!  This was a modified version of the file found in
'Tables/Input/ht/rockers.kti' on the BRLTTY main branch.

Hu, where to place this modified file?  So I looked up readme.customize
and found that I needed to place the file in /etc/xdg/brltty.  Just like
that?  So I wrote the file in /etc/xdg/brltty/rockers.kti, rebooted my
little computer and... well, my old key binding file didn't work.
Pressing on most keys on the Braille display didn't have any impact.
What was wrong?

I decided to just place the current version of rockers.kti in
/etc/xdg/brltty/rockers.kti and then update it a little at a time.  So I
placed the default file with default configuration, rebotted and... and
it was pretty much the same thing.  The only way to go back to the
default setting was to remove the file /etc/xdg/brltty/rockers.kti
altogether.

I thought I remembered I had to create some sub-directories last time,
so I tried to replicate the path BRLTTY was looking for, writing a
/etc/xdg/brltty/Input/ht/rockers.kti file (I skipped the 'Tables'
directory, I thought it wasn't important).  The file now is ignored, as
is probably not surprising.

Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks in advance,
Vincent

Somebody on list did a program called Less with Bookmarks that does all this.
No idea where hehe went or what became of the program.
