Re: [BRLTTY] Testing on Windows

2017-04-06 Thread Felix Grützmacher - Help Tech Elektronik GmbH
Hello,
the problem occurred in both. I'm trying to find out if Microsoft may have
patched the version of BRLTTY that's downloaded automatically when they
install Braille support.
I'll also find out if it's just the machine I'm testing on that causes the
issue.
Kind regards,

Which version doesn't work for you? The one I recently built for you to test
with? What about our official 5.4 release?

Hello Mario,
currently installing that exact version from Microsoft as we speak, and then
we'll test with AB4 and EBR.
If this works for us as well then we know that your driver is working on
Windows under the right conditions, and that MS figured out those conditions.
This is great news! Thanks for sharing!

I am confused, esp. since I just learnt that I know someone who is successfully
running an AB4 with BRLTTY and Narrator (one of your resellers, actually, I
guess you know whom I'm talking about).

So while the error above is another riddle, I too now think that you are
testing with a device which is different from what we originally had to
implement support for. Or your libusb is corrupting packets. Or
something similarily strange. To repeat, I know an AB4 user who is
successfully using it on Windows with the BRLTTY version that is being offered
by Microsoft for download. So, back to the drawing table:
It would be very nice to know if your AB4 works on Linux.

I can get it to work by manually starting it, and then starting NVDA.

I think there is a problem with the install.bat, I get this:

BRLTTY 5.4 rev BRLTTY-5.4-233-g7afcc55eM [http://brltty.com/]
brltty.exe: OpenSCManager error 5: Access is denied.
The service name is invalid.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2185.

It is interesting that install.bat contains the line

"%~dp0bin\brltty" -I

I'm not sure that is valid syntax for Windows?

I might be lying, but I believe Felix is the first person to test AB/AS models
on Windows. At least I never did, and I don't remember any AB/AS uwsers on
Windows. So this might as well be a platform specific problem.

yes, this is an actual physical Active Braille it's talking to, with

All Active Braille and Active Star and Actilino devices have this USB

It should just work. Sébastien is correct that you need the Windows screen
driver, but that's the default on Windows.

Is it correct that you're using an Active Braille?

The problem is that it's looking for USB output endpoint 1 and not finding
it.
Do you have Active Braille models that use a different USB output endpoint?

Sorry for the misunderstanding. It was relevant all along for many users of
NVDA in combination with lots of Braille displays for which no native NVDA
drivers existed, so BRLTTY has its firm place on Windows, just not yet with
those two devices.
The effort of making it work on Windows was never wasted. And now it's
become relevant for AS4/AB4.

The thing is that I don't know Windows well enough to guide you as to what
to look at on the system. In this case, I'd like to verify the USB
descriptors on the AB that you're using. On Linux that's as simple as
looking at a text-based kernel-provided pseudo file. I've no idea if Windows

In this case, any distribution would do and brltty doesn't even need to be
on the system. What I'd like is for the AB to be connected to the system,
and, after a couple of seconds to let USB enumeration settle down, I'd like
to see a copy of the file /sys/kernel/debug/usb/devices. Could this be
easily done?

Anotehr alternative could be for me to build another version of brltty for
Windows which would log a complete hex dump of the USB descriptors.

Are you still unable to use it when manually installing 5.5? If so: Is it
with libusb, libusb-1.0, or both? Is it on a 32-bit system, a 64-bit system,
or both?
