Re: [BVARC] Youth On The Air Camp | Special Event Call & YouTube

2022-06-11 Thread Ben Cook via BVARC
Way to go Charlotte! That's really awesome to get to attend YOTA!

I checked out the QRZ page and it looks like the satellite operations will be
on June 16th and 17th, primarily on the FM satellites (yikes!). I'm going to
try to jump on some of the passes around those dates and times to see if I can
spot anyone from the special event.

YOTA has a twitter feed, so hopefully they will post which birds and passes
they are going to try for (posting this info makes it MUCH easier to find
folks). Actually, I highly encourage any ham that's comfortable with social
media to sign up for a twitter account under their call sign. Makes for great
use with POTA, SOTA, band openings, etc.

I'm trying to get my son Kyle, KG5YPD (and new sophmore at Texas A)
interested in the event for next year. Might encourage him to get on the air
more!

Re: [BVARC] Looking for a Mosfet

2022-06-11 Thread Rudolph Ackerman via BVARC
This is part of a battery charging system, it used to charge different battery
type used in RC aircraft.    I tend to charge four 6S 6000mAh LiPo packs at the
same time putting 15amp's in to each pack.

I found the Mosfet at aliexpress.   Getting 10 shipped for about $9.00.    They
claim I should have them by July 1st.    We'll see.

I've got one, but I am totally burned out on all these people that
want to "borrow" a gin pole - for free of course. I've loaned mine
out too many times.

A gin pole is an expensive item, currently retailing for about $1200.
That's not what I paid since I've had mine since the 70's. I would
sell it for half the retail price and include about 200' of rope.
THAT is a good deal. It's the one made by Rohn for 25G/45G.

When we loan out a gin pole, we may never see it again.

Also, it may be MONTHS until we get it back, and we may need to track
down who we lent it to. Who was that guy? Get their phone number.

If the borrower failed to complete the tower project in a single day,
he probably left the gin pole on the tower for a week or two - or a
month (or 2 or 3). So the rope is rotted.

If asked to replace the rope, they go to Home Depot and buy the
cheapest rope on display. Plastic. Hams are cheap MF'ers. So yes, my
once beautiful 200' rope is now the cheap Home Depot plastic.

So I am not going to be the nice guy anymore. My gin pole is for
RENT. $100 per week. I also demand a DEPOSIT of an additional $500
(cash or crypto stablecoin) which will be refunded if returned in
good condition. Otherwise, you keep it.

working HF stations, satellites, and operating EME during that time. I don't
think we have specific bands or frequencies that I know of as of now.
I have attached a flyer outlining when we'll be operating; we also may be
operating in the mornings (6:00-7:00 AM CDT) and evenings (9:30-10:30 PM CDT).
We will be working the special event callsign W8Y. (I think QSL cards are
available).
ALSO, the camp is livestreaming its opening and closing ceremonies as well as
releasing daily recap videos. You can check out the channel here.

Email me if you end up making contact with someone from camp! I would love to
hear some familiar voices from home but I may not be the one operating when you

Hope to hear you on the air!--
