And I get for each of my rigs a 12-18inch M-F coax pigtail.  Takes the tension 
out of the rig's ANT feed.  And much easier to replace the pigtail than a 
connector on the rig.

On the Y FT-2980, a pigtail is really needed because of the tightness of where 
the ANT port is.  It has a protection ring around it.  Seems Y used a Standard 
commercial rig body for the 2980.  But excellent radio overall in quality.

ABR can do custom cables.  And Will Call Mo-Fr.

If it hasn't been shared, here's a great calculator that will give you the feed 
line loss of different cables.  For anything HF, for a run less than 100', I'll 
tell you the standard RG-8X you can get off Amazon will suit you just fine.  
I'm running less than 100W from my 991A into an off-center fed random wire 
inverted V with the peak 30' off the ground, and I'm into every continent but 
Antartica no sweat.  I'm probably putting more energy into the dirt than in the 
air, but if it works, I mean

The calculator will quickly demonstrate for VHF, RG-8X is simply not viable for 
any lengthy run.  UHF- forget it.  You need something fatter, I recommend 
ABR-400, it's a pliable, bendable competitor to LMR-400, though slightly worse 
on attenuation.  You won't know the difference.  ABR has been really good to 
me, they'll treat you really well.

I always try to use Belden...never had a bad experience with it...LMR is ok
but I use it in simplex operations...doubt you'll ever need to use it on
rptr but in duplex operation, LMR is bad...foil and braid shield cause
noise issues...double copper braid like RG214 OR RG9 , or the smaller RG55
, 400 is best..but for home use LMR is ok...always get the largest your
budget can afford with correct connectors. RG 58 is fine for short runs at
VHF and even long runs on HF but it has power limits... good for 100watts
or so...above that, go with 1/2in size cable like RG8  or LMR400.

While we are on the topic of coax…. I am in need of buying a few pieces for my 
mobile kit. Instead of buying one really long piece, I think I would prefer 2 
or 3 smaller pieces to make use easier. I could connect with barrel connectors 
to get the length I need for each specific deployment.

So my question is - is their significant cable loss in using the barrel 
connectors?

 My best coax is from ABR (here in Houston) and DX Engineering.  I have some 
Wireman coax which is also good, but not quite the quality I desire.  However, 
Wireman control cables are the best I have purchased.

I agree that ABR Industries is the best choice.  They are members of the 
local clubs and can make any custom cable that you need, specify 
connectors, coax jumpers and any other coax you need in your shack.


They also sweep test their final construction prior to delivery, 
something that I can't verify other companies do.  As a former Chief 
Tech in the CATV industry we would sweep any coax, .500 or.750 before 
any installation to insure integrity.  These days fiber is used 
extensively but before this coax was the prime distribution for both RF 
and AC power.
