I have the portable version as well and its built really well. Its good if you 
want a decent performing multi-band antenna. The instructions show several ways 
to set it up, but I always put my feed point up in the air. I don't really like 
the idea of having the feed point on the ground. It doesn't perform quite as 
well as inverted V antennas at 34 feet, but it will get the job done. I do 
recommend putting a 1:1 current balun right at the SO-239. At least in my case 
I was able to tune it better than without... The wire is copper clad kevlar.

My Vertical was a great antenna when I was in Oregon, but all the Plastic 
insulators have broken down in Houston.

I have the portable version. It works great. I think you will be fine with
the base version. Some operators use it to check into traffic nets in the
morning. You will need a tuner to get the bands you want. Otherwise a good
antenna.
