While running the sample test suite for Weblogic 7.0
   ant test.weblogic.70
I found the script starts WLS in test domain, deploys test.war
but then gets a 404 error (or blank page) from this URL
 http://localhost:7001/test/ServletRedirector?Cactus_Service=RUN_TEST

hum... Are you really running the sample application as is, without
changing a single line of it? :-)

BTW, the default port used by Cactus is 8080. Could that be the issue?

What is the expected behavior? What are the parameters for
Cactus_Service and where is it specified?

The SevletRedirector parameters are actually not documented (except the
Cactus_Service=RUN_TEST one) as they are not meant to be used directly
by the end users. It is the Cactus client side that calls the Cactus
redirector on the server side so you shouldn't have to worry about
knowing the parameters.

The only time I have seen this is when you compile with optimize (javac -O optimize),
but it depends on the compiler. Can you send us what options you are using to compile
the code with, and also what compiler you are using?

Hi Adam,

I have personally no idea! There is nothing that I know of in Cactus
that prevents line numbers from appearing in stack traces (even our use
of AspectJ should not prevent this).

I'm not much of help but at least you have my sympathy... :-)

-Vincent

PS: It's a nice idea to use Cactus to test MBeans. We should definitely
add this somewhere on the web site!

I'm running Cactus on JBoss 3.0.3 to test some server side components
(MBeans). Anyway, my stack traces are coming up with Source

 I'm
not using a JITC and my server.log is showing line numbers. Anybody
 experiencing this problem?

I think you've forgotten to attach it.

Can you try the sample application as is with no changes to see if it
works fine for you?

What is the Cactus_Service=RUN_TEST parameter for?

It's a noop parameter used to verify the Redirector is answering. You
should see a blank page when you call this URL. The Ant runservertests
task needs a URL that it polls to know the container is started and
ready to serve requests. You can put any URL pointing to a resource in
your webapp.

RE: books on cactus?

2003-01-31 Thread Vincent Massol
Hi Eric,

Exactly! I have been working with Ted Husted on a book about JUnit and
its extension for some time now. The manuscript is almost finished. Our
publisher is Manning and the book should be available in about 3-4
months. We are going to start announcing it publicly real soon now.
We'll probably make available some chapters for public reviews.

As you would have guessed, there are lots of chapters about Cactus and
how to use Cactus to unit test Servlets, Filters, Tag libs, JSPs, EJBs,
Database applications, etc. However, it is not about Cactus. It is about
unit testing and choosing the right tool for the job. Thus, it also
shows how to perform unit testing with Mock Objects, Stubs and other
techniques and it explains which to use when.

It is very hands on, with best practices distilled along the way and
based on real life examples. In addition, we have tried very hard not to
duplicate information that is readily available on the web sites of the
different frameworks used, but rather to present them in situation and
provide knowledge based on our experience of using them in production
projects.

Stay tuned.

Thanks
-Vincent

If not, is there interest in writing one?
IHMO This would make a solid topic for a book,
as QA teams w/o previous experience
want to ramp up on the Junit/Cactus setup
quickly in a tutorial format, w/o going thru the online docs.
