Re: [Callers] New dance, new move

2018-09-25 Thread Keith Wood via Callers
Just to clarify, in the snake movement in B2 it's only the men
allemanding down the centre, past three other men.

Hi Everyone

My latest dance for your enjoyment, with an animation at
http://www.dancekaleidoscope.org.au/dance.html#Ophidian.

Ophidian
Keith Wood September 2018
Becket formation, double reverse progression

The snakelike move for the men to reunite with their partners inspired
this dance, and its name. If there's a spare couple at the bottom they
wait together on the "men's" line. The woman joins in from the
diagonal ladies chain, while the man joins in from the snake.

A1    Men allemande left once around, while women orbit clockwise
half-way

        Swing opposite
A2    On the left diagonal, ladies chain to shadow
        Opposite do-si-do left shoulder
B1    Star left once around
        Star right once around
B2    Snake: Men allemande right 5/8, next neighbour allemande left
1/2, next neighbour allemande right 1/2 to face partner; man coming
out at the end loop right and rejoin immediately

        Swing partner

Cheers

One of mine:

   Polka-geist

Formation: Becket formation, reverse progression

Music: 32 bar polkas

Source: Keith Wood November 2014

Notes: Someone at dancing mentioned "Polka-geist" as a pun. What a great
dance name I thought. So developed a Contra dance with a polka feel and
scary and back-to-front moves.

A1 In ballroom hold, gallop across the set, the couple on the women's
normal side separating to let the couple on the men's normal side pass
through (4 beats)

Polka balance towards the centre of the set (4 beats)

Gallop across the set, the couple on the women's side separating to let

Polka balance towards the centre of the set (4 beats)
A2 Polka once around the other couple and continue anti-clockwise
around the set to progress to the next couple

B1 Allemande partner right half-way (4 beats)

Balance the long wavy lines (make a face or say boo to your neighbour)
(4 beats)

Re: [Callers] Contras which feature a "Dublin Bay" figure

2017-01-27 Thread Keith Wood via Callers
Here's another contribution to the Dublin Bay collection, hopefully
fulfilling the criteria below:

   Liffey Outflow

Formation: Becket formation

Music: 32 bar reels

Source: Keith Wood Jan 2017

Notes: Following online discussions about the Dublin Bay movement I
decided to create a dance that incorporated it.

1-4 Gypsy opposite
5-8 1st man and 2nd woman (at the bottom of each minor set)
back-to-back and finish facing down, while the others cross (right
shoulder) and move to the end of a line of four facing down, men on one
side, women on the other
9-12 Dublin Bay: lines of four back up (up the hall) and then come
forward, turning individually half-way (toward same-sex neighbour) at
the last moment to face up
13-16 Lines of four back up (down the hall) and then come forward,
turning individually to face same-sex neighbour at the last moment
17-22 3/4 hey for four passing same-sex neighbour right-shoulder to
start (until meeting your partner the second time)

23-24 Circle left half-way (men together and women together)
25-28 Swing partner
29-32 Slice left: advance towards the couple on your left diagonal,
then retire straight back from them (progression); spare couples wheel
onto the opposite side

Cheers

Keith Wood

I'd love to see more Dublin Bay dances that aren't all glossary moves
surrounding the down-hall move.

...

So. What else we got? :)

[Callers] New dance and formation

2016-12-13 Thread Keith Wood via Callers

Hi Everyone

Here's a dance I wrote for a friend's birthday - Caught in the Nette.
The new formation is a duple cross - a duple improper set with an extra
person in the middle of each minor set. It has a double progression for
couples and the middle person in each set doesn't progress, but those
around them do.

See an animation of the dance at
http://www.dancekaleidoscope.org.au/dance.html#CaughtInTheNette.

   Caught in the Nette

Formation:Duple cross - duple improper with an extra person in the
middle of each minor set

Music:32 bar reels or jigs

Source:Keith Wood February 2016

Notes:For Jeanette "Nette" Pembroke's 60th birthday.

The middle person in each set doesn't progress, but the couples they
dance with do (double progression)! Hence they are caught in the net at
that spot.

A1 Men and middle half hey, middle passing right shoulder with 2nd man
to start; women turn out clockwise

Women and middle half hey, middle passing right shoulder with 2nd woman
to start; men turn out anti-clockwise

A2 1s and 2s half rights-and-lefts, starting with partner

1s do-si-do; while 2s cross giving right hand and move to the end of a
line of five; middle steps back into the centre of the line
B1 Line of five down the hall (6 beats), ends turn alone, while middles
turn man's side high, woman's side low, to invert the three (4 beats),
back up the hall and bend the line (6 beats)

B2
Circle half-way (4 beats) and balance the ring (4 beats)

Middle and 1s arch down over 2s, all moving forward (4 beats)

Middle take hands with new 2s below and draw them back between the 1s
(double progression), 1s and 2s moving forward; 2s that reach the top
switch sides (4 beats)

Hi All,
I’m going to lead an English dance in early February. I’ve led English
once or twice, and mostly stuck with The Playford Collection, and some
Pat Shaw dances. I wouldn’t mind collecting a few more modern dances.

Please feel free to either post them to the list, or send to me directly:

And, of course, please include the music.
Thanks,

Over the past several years, we have had several ‘extra’ dances here
in Tallahassee that are advertised to the contra dance listserv and
elsewhere as old-time or square dances, or old time square dances,
with live music. We have had anywhere from 8 to 30 dancers come. One
of the things we heard from dancers was that they did not like being
left out — wanting to dance but not enough dancers for a full square.
We decided on a policy of leaving no-one sitting who wants to dance.
That means that we don’t decide what dance to call (at least not for
sure) until we see how many couples stand up to dance; and it means
that I have dances ready to go for 4, 5, 6 or 7 couples. With 6 or 7
it can be a longways set, a contra, a circle mixer, or a big circle
square-dance. With 8 or 12 it’s a 4-couple square. Folks seem to
appreciate the concern for their enjoyment, and there are plenty of
good dances to choose from for any number of couples. (Although I
could wish for more good five-couple dances, the vast repertory of
circle mixers comes in handy.) I have also used a couple of 6- or
9-couple dances I learned from Phil Jamieson.

Others have recently dealt with the situation where you have only
three or even two couples.

Re: [Callers] 9-person dance?

2016-01-22 Thread Keith Wood via Callers

I've written a new one recently: The Curse of Scotland.

See an animation at
http://dancekaleidoscope.org.au/dance.html#TheCurseOfScotland.

Formation:Longways set for four couples, plus one person extra in the
centre between couples 2 and 3

Music:32 bar reels

Source:Keith Wood December 2015

Notes:For Anthony Simon's 60th birthday.

The 9 of Diamonds playing card is nicknamed the Curse of Scotland,
supposedly because every 9th Scottish king (with diamonds in their
crowns) was a tyrant. This dance is in the formation of the nine spots
on the card.

The extra person is the nine-spot. If the nine-spot is a woman, then the
stars are done left hand at the ends and right hand in the centre, with
the nine-spot leading the 1st woman and finishing in her place.

1-4 Nine-spot with 2nd couple arch over 1st couple (who don't move),
nine-spot and 2nd man arch over 2nd woman to invert the line, and arch
back down over 1st couple, 3rd and 4th couples circle left once around
5-8 Nine-spot with 3rd couple arch over 4th couple (who don't move),
nine-spot and 3rd woman arch over 3rd man to invert the line, and arch
back up over 4th couple, 1st and 2nd couples circle left once around
9-16 Double figure of eight at each end, 2nd and 3rd couples cast
up/down respectively to start, 1st and 4th couples cross down/up
17-20 1st and 2nd couples, and 3rd and 4th couples, half
rights-and-lefts at each end
21-24 1st and 4th couples half rights-and-lefts in the middle (around
nine-spot), 2nd and 3rd couples swing with ceilidh hold
25-28 1st and 3rd couples with nine-spot star right once around at the
bottom (nine-spot in front of 1st man), 2nd and 4th couples star right
at the top
29-32 1st and 4th couples with nine-spot star left once around in the
middle (nine-spot in front of 1st man), finishing with 1st man in the
centre of the set as the new nine-spot, and the nine-spot opposite 1st
woman, 2nd and 3rd couples swing with ceilidh hold

I?ve been asked to call a one hour set in a rural heritage hall for a party for
about 130 folks. There will be two sets at the end of the evening with a Blues
Band. Yep, its a bit odd, but the organizer wants to bring all his various
friends together and thought, rightly, that having someone organize some
dancing would help that along. Has anyone ever called a community dance (circle
mixers, scatter sets, longways, maybe a square) to a blues band? The band seems
willing to work with me. Any suggestions about what to say to them so that I
could call La Bastringue or Galopede, for example, and it would work?

Any suggestions for youtube links for a caller calling to something other than
the usual trad tune? I could bring in a fiddler and ask the band to back the
fiddler up. Any advice on doing it that way?

Is this so ridiculous that you?re all doubled over laughing? People will be
there not because they are blues lovers so much as their buddy is throwing a
party.

In any case, I?d be grateful for advice

Re: [Callers] few dancers dances

2015-07-11 Thread Keith Wood via Callers

Hi Rickey

I have a five person dance in a diamond:
http://www.dancekaleidoscope.org.au/dance.html#Crossroads.

Crossroads
5 people, four in a diamond, one in the middle, numbered clockwise from
the top with 5 in the middle

A1 1 and 2, 3 and 4 do-si-do, starting right shoulder

The same swing (crossed hands)
A2
5 faces right and hey for three across the set with 2 and 4, starting
right shoulders, while 1 and 3 orbit anti-clockwise all the way around
the set
B1 5 faces up and hey for three up and down the set with 1 and 3,
starting left shoulders, while 2 and 4 orbit clockwise all the way
around the set

B2 1 and 5 two-hand turn 1 1/2 to change places

Balance the ring around the new 5 and Petronella turn to next position
to the right (anti-clockwise)

And a five couple dance in Levi Jackson formation:
http://www.dancekaleidoscope.org.au/dance.html#Rubigold.

Rubigold
Five couples in a horseshoe

A1 Side couples left hand star once around at each end (leaving enough
room between the two stars for the tops to pass through); top couple
crosses, passing right shoulder, and cast to between the two stars

Side couples right hand star once around at each end; top couple
crosses between the stars, passing right shoulder, and cast to the bottom
A2 Sides hey for four along their lines, starting right shoulder with
partner; tops cross, passing right shoulder, and cast back to the top
(improper)

Tops right allemande 1 1/2; while sides complete their hey
B1 Grand chain six places (one bar per change) starting right hand with
partner (12 steps)

Take the next in a lower promenade hold and promenade one place
anti-clockwise (men finish one place clockwise in the set, women finish
two places clockwise) (4 steps)

B2 Balance and swing partner

I've written some other five person diamond dances, but haven't tested
them out yet.

Cheers

Keith
