Best bet is to call a local plastic supply company and see what they have to offer. There are a LOT of options when it comes to plastics. ABS is the same plastic used in motorcycle helmets. It requires complex and expensive molds to formand is not practical for a one off camera. That is only true if you figure that you must work with injection molded material. You can always work with sheets of plastic much the same as you would a piece of wood. I use a Walker Titan 4x5 camera that is made of ABS and love it. I don't have to worry about rain or snow and can shoot when many other (probably smarter) people have gone indoors. Look at A HREF=http://www.walkercameras.com/index.htm;Walker Cameras/A for more information. Yes, the Walker camera sounds pretty cool! View Camera magazine had a good review of this camera some time back. - Wayde ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) ___ Cameramakers mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://rmp.opusis.com/mailman/listinfo/cameramakers

[Cameramakers] RE: Kydex
Sid, I took the bait and looked around for Kydex. It looks like you are in New York, which distributor do you buy this stuff from? Is the one in CO? Is this material opaque, even when very thinAs could I thermoform this into a bellows? Can I get this material with a metallic coating? I have more questions but this should do for the moment. I also ran across Kydex wall paper, NOW I find the stuff after my kids are grown!! .. ..Message: 7 another excellent material is ..Kydex. It a PVC/acrylic alloy that comes in sheets in a useful range of ..colours .. ___ Cameramakers mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://rmp.opusis.com/mailman/listinfo/cameramakers

If you were to use a wide-angle (i.e., short focus) lens, wouldn't you have to use much less than 1/2 a sphere in order to have the lens close enough to the film to focus? Re: [Cameramakers] Buy or build a viewfinder
Manuel, The 5x7 aspect ratio is real close to 6x9. I'm guessing that a viewfinder from an old Kodak folder or something might work o.k. for a cheapie. [Cameramakers] re: crackpot medievalists or creative endeavors?
I've been thinking about using my skills in building fiberglass/carbon fiber R/C sailplanes in this arena, having done this from scratch, including making the mold to cast a hollow FG/CF/Kevlar fuselage. These materials provide for very lightweight and strong construction. It seems much simpler to build the boxes for a field camera than a sleek, streamlined sailplane and all its compound curves. I figure a carbon fiber, or a CF/kevlar weave, laminate would provide a very lightweight and rigid housing. The mold would be simple to build as well, if you decided use one. Maybe a CF/foam/CF laminate could be used to lighten things up even more. If you oven cured it (which would not be difficult compared to the long wing spans of R/C sailplanes) then you wouldn't have to worry about undue heat absorption and could leave it unpainted if you like. Granted it wouldn't have the natural beauty of wood, but I think you could possible shave a few pounds off an 8x10, and even more off larger formats. Anyone out there given this a try? Seems that I ran across a company that makes a composite LF camera somewhere, Ebony maybe? _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ___ Cameramakers mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://rmp.opusis.com/mailman/listinfo/cameramakers
Re: [Cameramakers] Buy or build a viewfinder
Hi Manuel: Why not build a metal-frame viewfinder similar to the ones which used to be used on Speed Graphic press cameras. These simple finders were remarkably effective since they had parallax compensation and even field-size compensation, since the front frame was mounted on the moving lens panel and the angle of view was reduced as the lens was racked out to focus close. Re: [Cameramakers] Buy or build a viewfinder
Title: Re: [Cameramakers] Buy or build a viewfinder I would use a one element lens, such as the ones from Edmund Scientific, as long as it is close to the same focal length, as a viewing lens. That is, put it on a lensboard and frame your image on the groundglass. Then change it to your zoneplate and shoot. Actually you might try stacking a couple of cheap reading glasses lenses to achieve the approximate focal length, and if they are a little off, the softness might resemble the zoneplate image. Reading glasses are available here for a dollar a pair. This is a good way to frame pinhole cameras shots too. Other possibilities: - masking down a cheap door-peephole viewer till it matches your ZP angle - using the viewfinder off a disposable camera, especially a slight wide-angle - the discontinued Kodak DISC cameras had very neat viewfinders - using a cardboard frame with a string to measure the correct distance - or best yet, use ZEN viewfinder by imagining the camera's point of view. Don't laugh, I do that all the time. Good luck. Sam Wang Hi all: Where I can buy a viewfinder (cheap if possible) for my portable 5 x 7' Zone Plate camera (under construction)?
