Hi Folks,

In addition to not posting images to the list, PLEASE turn off your html
posting,

It uses up a lot of bandwidth and looks like this in the digest.

[Cameramakers] Re: Crown/Speed Graphics modifications

2003-01-24 Thread Michael Hendrickson
Hi,

I noticed the following and felt compelled to enter two cents' worth:

Philip Willarney wrote:

I've also been looking at the front upright and
thinking about modifying it to allow more movements.
Anyone got suggestions/comments/feedback on doing
this?

There are two things I've never appreciated about the later Crown/Speed
Graphics: 1) the metal lensboard with the lip around the edges doesn't
fit on any of my other cameras; and 2) there's only rear tilt, no front
tilt.

What I did with two of these cameras:

I took off the front standard (detached from bellows and off the front
end of the rail). For one I made a new lensboard standard from wood and
used the old lensboard clips and vertical tightening knobs on the new
one (I embedded simple machine screws of the same thread by drilling the
holes a little too small and threading them in). The new one uses the
same 4x4 wooden lensboards that the original Speed Graphic used, which
fits my other cameras. (For the second one I used a Bakelite standard
that I managed to pick up; it was broken through on one edge and a
little superglue fixed that.)

Then I turned the metal standard around so that it tilts forwards. In
doing so I unscrewed the lever on the bottom which locks shift and
pointed it towards the front again and re-attached it.

It took a little handword to get the new standard to travel up and down
gracefully because of the shape of the channel but only because I didn't
estimate correctly to begin with when doing the woodworking.

From Anniversary or earlier Speeds and Crowns you can often get these
parts ready-made, but the later bakelite ones are often seriously
chipped or even broken and aren't as strong as the earlier wooden ones,
which are really nice. And they fit just fine. But even if you end up
making a new one, the clips from any of them come in handy for the new
part and they have nice attaching hardware (threaded sockets for the
screws that hold the clips on).

So now I've got a Speed and a Crown with lensboards (4x4 Graflex C
style) that are compatible with my other cameras, and front tilt
besides. They work well and I don't miss the rear tilt feature at all (I
don't recall a single time I've ever used rear tilt, although I don't
rule it out of course. But I've got view cameras for that stuff if
needed.)

This setup doesn't give any front swings of course, but that would be
another whole project in itself. Could probably be done pretty simply
but you'd have to substantially modify the hardware and I've been too
lazy to try it so far.

Hope this helps.

'Bye for now,

[Cameramakers] Re: Alphax shutter

2003-01-24 Thread John Moore
 Hi -

I just bought a cheap Wollensak Alphax shutter to
use as a mount for a pinhole/zone plate.

snipped content

 Two Questions:

1.) What's the cheapest, easiest way to mount the
plate? (I'd rather save Steve Grimes for the big
jobs.) I assume that I want to mount my plate near
the center to minimize vignetting, and there's a 1/4
in. ledge around the diaphram that would allow me to

do that with something as simple as a couple of
washers. What do I use for a retaining ring?

2.) What kind of cable release does this take? It
has a post, but it doesn't seem to be threaded for
 modern CR's.

 thanks in advance,
 heller

Heller, take a look at this page for an example of how
I used a very similar shutter for a pinhole setup:
http://www.speakeasy.org/~jlmoore/speedioscope.htm

As far as the cable release, I found one to use from
an older oscilloscope camera. In fact, that's a great
source for old shutters for just this purpose!

Murray,

You might try Ron Wisner's site for discussions on lens designs. He is
quite the fan of the old protar lenses.
