[Cameramakers] Intro

2003-03-18 Thread john
Newbie here. I don't know if conventions call for an introduction, but
briefly, my name is John Stafford and I live in Southeast Minnesota,
work in academic technology and am also a retired Chicago
photojournalist (newspaper photographer, magazine editor). To keep my
sanity (arguable) in our dark winters, I make oddball cameras.

Good to be here.

[Cameramakers] 40 telestigmat- Desparate! Need info!

2003-03-18 Thread DAYTONDIGITAL.COM
Howdy Ya'll, I bought two element groups of a 40 BL telestigmat. I
have no barrel so I have to make one. Can anyone tell me the distance
between the element groups? Also, it appears that the rear group is
diverging so can anyone give me some idea how far the rear element
normally is from the film? Cheers, joe

[Cameramakers] news about telestigmat so far

2003-03-18 Thread DAYTONDIGITAL.COM
On Altavista I found gene's comment-

Of course it is huge, with 5 1/2 inch diameter barrel and 5 inch front lens,
the barrel is about 8 1/4 inches long. Someone had rigged it with ABS pipe
and a bayonet mount for a 35mm SLR!

Gene, how long was that abs pipe? I assume the 8 1/4 doesn't include the abs pipe?
Cheers, joe

I can get it but I'm not home now. I'll be able to measure it tomorrow.
Ok?

[Cameramakers] Parts Research

2003-03-18 Thread Main
I am a newbie to LF.

By making trips to pawn shops and thrift stores, I have purchased the
following items. I'll give you what information I can. Can you, the members
of this forum, help me flesh out the rest of the story on each piece, and
figure out how to build them into a cohesive unit? Thanks in advance.

First we have a shutter. It has Lafayette Instrument CO. on the face. It
most closely resembles a Copal #0 or #1. It does say Made in Japan on the
side. It was originally constructed for use as a Tachistoscopic
Attachment(?)consisting of a manually operated shutter and mounting. I
really need the technical specs for the unit. From the Page of paper that
passes for a manual The tachistoscopic shutter incorporated in these units
automatically presents exposure times from 1/125th to 1 second, Bulb and
Time, and also contains a continuously variable iris. After removing the
piece from it's stand, I find a red stamped box with 4807 inside of it. If
you need more information just ask.

Item # 2 is a little more straight forward. It is an ILEX Optical
Co.Rochester,N.Y. Paragon Anastigmat f:4.5 7 1/2 Inch Lens Serial(?)60022
f:4.5 to 45. I do not know the history but guess the following: Lens 1,1,2
on the back has a small 681 stamped in it Approx. 1/16th of an inch tall.
(Almost missed it.) Any Idea what it was used for?

Total investment so far: about 20 bucks. (Just got Lucky I hope)

Can the lens be mounted to the shutter or perhaps can I get an adapter made?

What are the pieces? Somebody has got to have an Idea.

I am looking into a DIY LF. I do possess all the skills necessary except the
metal machining. Yes I work Leather and wood and film. I have and idea that
about 250 hours will transpire before I am satisfied with my camera.

Is this one of the lenses that was made for the Tele-Graflex cameras used by
the newspapers years ago to take sports pix from well up in the stands? If
so, it will probably cover 4 X 5. :) RKS
