Well I finished my adaptor and it seems to be functionally perfect if
marginally ugly. All my 4x5 magazines, film holders and roll film backs
fit
fine. the estimated total cost is around 20 bucks. The back is sort of a
spring back but with a removable groundglass. The spring is made of music
wire about 2mm in dia and is bend into sort of a recurved bucket handle.
Pulling outward allows removal of the groundglass or filmholder. Like I
mentioned before, the adaptor is made of many small pieces of ABS sheet
 glued and screwed together.

I replaced the 135 CZJ Tessar with a 127mm Ektar I already had. This
mostly
for the flash synch, though I suspect the Ektar will be a slightly nicer
lens than the lovely old Tessar. Perfect for portraits in the park with
the
6x7 roll back. 4x5 sheets will not get completely covered, of course, but
I
 don't lose very much. 9x12 comes to about 3 1/2 x 4 3/4.

  Cheers.

 Gene

It's called a BeeBee. Made by Certo for Burleigh Brooks. I imagine it
would fit on any number of 9x12 cameras of that era (20's, 30's?). No pics
yet. I'll try to get some.

Nathan,

Look in your yellow pages unter Plastics. Many cities have plastics
distributers . San Diego has two.

 Gene,

Where do you find ABS plastic sheet?

 Thanks,
 Nathan

I'm using my favorite cameramaker material...ABS
 plastic sheet.

[Cameramakers] 9x12 to 4x5 adaptor

2003-01-19 Thread Gene Johnson

Noticing the beautiful old 9x12 cameras on eBay for
very low prices, I ended up buying a BeeBee (Burleigh Brooks by Certo).
I'm currently making a slide-in adaptor to allow me to use my 4x5
roll-film backs and filmholders. Doesn't look that bad and it's
going well so far. Keep all posted.

The Patent Etui is about 7/8" thick, folded and is quite elegant. Saw one
on eBay last week in the $90.00 range. Lovely piece.

Not hard at all. I made and saved a custom search on eBay for a number of
them. Etui, Avus, Recomar, Certo, Maximar, Bergheil, Ernemann. I saw MANY
of them come up for sale. Many in nice condition and for very attractive
prices. I've never seen a Patent Etui in person, but they do look very thin
in the pictures. The BeeBee is maybe not quite that thin, but still VERY
compact.

I'm really excited about it as you can no doubt tell. I think these old
9x12's are an underutilized resource.

And as I remember it, the "Patent Etui" 9 X 12 is the flattest of them
all. Not too hard to find, either. RKS

Has anybody ever had a flash synch added to an old
compur? The F. Deckel Compur (#1?) runs well but a flash synch would
be nice. I'm trying to decide If I should do that or maybe justset
upthis 127mm Ektar I have on it. That would give me the flash option
when I need it. The lens and shutter just pops off after undoing a latch.
It would be pretty easy to set up the Ektar/Flash Supermatic to work the same
way.
