Re: [Cameramakers] Enlarger lights, focusing motors, books etc...

In short, the small, inexpensive, gear-reduced, reversible, 3-wire
capacitor run motor is by far the simplest way to go.
   Have fun, bye, sid.
Perhaps, but almost as easy is a DC motor with a gearbox. The beauty of it
is the ease of reversal (reverse polarity of power) and the ease of speed
control, so the last bit of adjustment can be done at a small speed (maybe
with a potentiometer to vary the speed.)

[Cameramakers] Enlarger lights, focusing motors, books etc...

2002-02-12 Thread William Nettles

1. Enlarger lights. I just bought a 3200 degree Kelbin lamp for $10 for a
500 watt rectangular work light I bought at home depot. Got the bulb at
Bulbtronics. Works great. This would make a very nice light source for a
diffuser enlarger.

2. Books to the VC book I would strongly recomend Ctein's after Exposure
book now in its second edition. It has great chapters on enlarger lens
tests, why camera lens aren't good enlarger lenses. Printing with variable
Contrast papers and the lack of archival-ness of RC paper. He's a physicist.
Perfect for the gearhead in us all.
The scariest part of the book is how paper responds differently than the eye
and how grain focusers 'don't really work'!

3 btw the flashing LED button red light I put in two 'dead' batteries from
my Nikon F3 in September are still flashing. I've placed the light in my
truck where it looks as though I have an expensive alarm system. I'm not
sure if LEDs are ready for enlarger-big time but they sure are efficient.

4. Motor focusing control. I doubt that you want a capacitor start motor for
a focusing control. Capacitors are used to give a motor under load a 'kick'
start. This will result in jumps instead of fine controlled focusing.
The best 'motor' for focusing is probably a Selsin motor. What you would
have is two motors connected by a cable of wires. One would be hooked up to
the focus stage the other you would hold in your hand. They are locked
electrically-such that when you turn the one in your hand 10 degrees the
other one will also turn ten degrees. No backlash. Should be able to find
small Selsin motors as surplus. Buy them in pairs.

5. If you still want to wire that capacitor motor. WW Grainger is the
easiest source for capacitors and wiring diagrams. Grainger also sells small
cheap $30~~ gear motors that are geared down to 1, 2, 20, 25 rpm. These
should also work.
