What version of Caret are you running?  If caret5.*, then maybe this page will

Note that you probably will need to convert the file to ASCII data format for 
it to appear that way.  You can do this in the GUI in the File: Save Data File 
dialog, or using the command line feature "caret_command -file-convert 
-format-convert".
