Re: [Catalyst] New design
Mark, Thanks for sharing this and for spearheading the effort! I think its a nice design, although as a few others mentioned perhaps it would be idea to not have the astronauts dancing, as that might step on the Dancer people toes a bit. My bigger concern for the website is overall long term management of it and its content. I've given this a lot of thought over the past year and not come up with a great solution, other than to say it would like be bette to have a smaller site overall, and just link to github and the main metacpan docs, and maybe a list of aggregated blogs, rather than a big central website. I just don't think we have the contribution level necessary for it (the current site was put together when the overall involvement was higher). I'd prefer a clean looking, smaller site but with up to date info and some ability to keep it freshened up. I know when I am interested in a new project and go to the website I want stuff like 'what its for which a clear use case for the problem its solving, links to the repo and news blogs so I can be sure there's actually people working on it and the project isn't dead. I think that's about the extent of my thinking on it, and I personally don't have time to make any of that happen :( John - Original Message - From: Mark Keating m.keat...@shadowcat.co.uk To: catalyst@lists.scsys.co.uk Cc: Sent: Tuesday, July 23, 2013 4:48 AM Subject: [Catalyst] New design T he nice chaps at Evozon have recently been making design mocks for a bunch of Perl sites and they have come up with a fresh look for Catalyst. Re: [Catalyst] New design
Kind of odd. The spaceship is the lunar shuttle from 2001 a Space Odysy which is ambiguous since its now 2013, long past 2001, but still futuristic since there are no bases on the Moon. Yet. I don't get the dancers either, especially since Dancer is a competitor for Catalyst. Sort of an ambivalent vibe. I'd sort of expect something linked to the word catalyst instead, but I confess I can't think of a visual that evokes catalysis (facilitating rate of reaction by effectively lowering activation energy). The design is clean and crisp though. Maybe a bit dark. But the Catalyst molecule logo was apparently mistaken for a planetary system, which might have inspired the space theme. Perhaps keep the layout but change the thematic elements back to the chemistry/molecular/catalysis theme. BTW, there are a lot of very cool colorful images of catalytic surfaces (for example as seen on the cover of The Definitive Guide to Catalyst). Take a look and let me know what you guys think. It's very pretty, I *love* the look of many of the graphics, and there are some nice ideas in there. However, it is a very wide design which is going to lead to horizontal scrolling (the red section could do with having 2 rows of 3 things instead of 1 of 5, the space between the text and the book graphic could be reduced, the two guides to getting a decent Perl environment could do with being shunted off to their own page with a choice of links instead of a choice of columns) with some very tiny fonts (really tiny, the font size could do with being a lot bigger). I like the space theme, although as other people have commented it isn't Catalyst's traditional theme. I'd carry the dotted graphic theme through to the red section though (possibly with the telescope being done in that style). The Dancing astronauts are cute but more suggestive of Dancer than Catalyst! Then we come to Man With A Brick. Putting the first brick in place is a good image for getting started … but completely breaks from the space theme from elsewhere in the page. It's also the first section that uses translucent backgrounds and it really feels like part of a different site. The list of clients is nice, very clear and good at highlighting some high profile users of Catalyst. It suffers from too-many-columns but that is easily fixed. -- David Dorward http://dorward.co.uk/ ___ List: Catalyst@lists.scsys.co.uk Listinfo: http://lists.scsys.co.uk/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/catalyst Searchable archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/catalyst@lists.scsys.co.uk/ Dev site: http://dev.catalyst.perl.org/
