[cayugabirds-l] Chickadee Behavior
We really enjoyed the Chickadee tale today. We have one/several doing this same behavior to the windows in the house. It happens on all sides of the house so that is why I suspect more than one. Last year it happened too but not to the same degree. We often feel that they are talking to us when they come to a window right where we are sitting. Watching our familiar birds behaviors in more detail is such a wonderful pastime. [cayugabirds-l] Thumping of wings???
Hello Cayuga Birders, Last night at dusk I heard the distinct thumping of wings. It was a regular beat not the crescendo decrescendo of a Grouse. Any ideas? [cayugabirds-l] Broadwinged Hawks-Wed
Hi all, I just spent from ~12:30 -1:30 today watching migration over our house on Hunt Hill Rd. FINALLY, a south wind! An OSPREY (first of the year for our yard) and 20-25 BROADWINGED HAWKS, flying in ones and twos, sometimes with an accipiter. Last evening there was a BROWN THRASHER singing from a field along Hunt Hill Rd., about 1 mile up from Ellis Hollow Rd. Alas, NOT a yard bird, but nice to hear and see anyway! [cayugabirds-l] raven's the bad guy
At noon today there was a nice thermal over my house in Ludlowville that a TURKEY VULTURE was circling in. I heard a croak and looked up to see a RAVEN join the TV spiraling upward. Shortly, one of our local RED-TAILED HAWKs joined in too. Seconds later, a CROW appeared, and began ferociously dive-bombing the RAVEN, and ignoring the other two potential predators. Soon three more CROWS joined the mob, and they all went after the RAVEN, one CROW doing some absolutely spectacular stoops, long nearly vertical dives with folded wings like a mini-peregrine. The RAVEN turned upside-down several times to fend them off, but soon gave up and flew away fast. The crows chased after, continuing to ignore the RED-TAIL and TV, who were still circling. I am getting more suspicious that we have nesting RAVENS somewhere in the Salmon Creek valley. [cayugabirds-l] Eagles' nest - Michigan Hollow Road
Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but a pair of Bald Eagles has built a nest on one of the wooded islands in the North Spencer Marsh. My neighbor Jay Reed emailed me about it several weeks ago, but I was in Puerto Rico at the time, and I've only this evening gotten around to checking it out. It's visible from a spot along rte 34 about 900' south of Mandeville's vegetable stand, but it's much closer and easier to watch from Michigan Hollow Road along the SE edge of the marsh. Both parents were present while I was there, and tending to something in the nest (turning eggs, perhaps?), but I didn't see any eaglets. One of the cool things about this nesting is that the pair constructed the nest right in the midst of a heronry, and the herons are all on their nests surrounding the eagles. -Geo Geo Kloppel, West Danby -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods Thrushapalooza
I stopped by the Lab, after work today, hoping to catch the last of Mark's morning Thrushapalooza on the East trail. I was able to see two very shy HERMIT THRUSHES , my first of the year. By the power line there were many WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS scratching in the leaves. One whistle sounded like a TOWHEE so I gave my best imitation back. A towhee immediately popped up right in front of me in the brush and began a auditory assault of real whistles that sent me fleeing for the quiet of the woods. On the walk back, by road, I heard what sounded like a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH near the Woodleton Boardwalk. Because of the traffic noise and my daydreaming I can't be sure it was one. Give a listen tomorrow if your nearby. There seem to be Barred Owls everywhere I go lately. They're hooting around my place tonight. Earlier this evening some other Barred Owls were hooting-it-up along the south leg of the Abbott's Loop Trail in lower Michigan Hollow. Two days ago I was walking in the swamp woods west of Michigan Hollow Marsh and came upon a lot of whitewash under hemlocks. Looking more closely at the ground I spotted owl pellets.
