[cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owls

2010-12-09 Thread bob mcguire
After lunch I continued to the northern Montezuma complex in search of
raptors and owls. Van Dyne Spoor Road has been plowed to where the
woods end and the fields open up. From there I walked east, watching
for shrikes and owls. At 2:50 the first Short-eared Owl glided in from
the NE and perched on top of one of the electric poles. A scan out
across the field produced a second SHEAOW on one of the saplings.

From there I drove down East Road, stopping briefly at the Knox-
Marcellus overlook. Two Short-eared Owls were foraging over the field/
marsh.

Next stop was on Rt 89 just south of Goose Haven. Jim Eckler, who I
had run into on VD Spoor Rd, mentioned a recent sighting of several
SHEAOW there. Chuck Gibson was manning a scope along the road and
reported no owls yet (about 3:30).

My last stop was the new Seneca Meadows Wetland Preserve north of
Seneca Falls. Two Red-tailed Hawks were visible from the parking lot,
and an American Kestrel flew over as I walked south. From the southern
platform I watched two Short-eared Owls fly back and forth over the
meadows and eventually perch in a large, lone oak (4:00). After awhile
one of the Red-tails flew in and dislodged the owls who then continued
foraging while emitting an occasional soft bark call.

[cayugabirds-l] Summerhill Crossbill

2010-12-09 Thread bob mcguire
I drove up to Summerhill SF this morning to take some photos of snowy
Salt Road. The road was rather quiet between the Roadrunners clubhouse
and Dresser Road. Half a dozen Bluejays, two Red-breasted Nuthatches,
two Downy Woodpeckers, two juncos, and a handfull of chickadees. Just
south of the clubhouse was a single, calling, fly-over Red Crossbill.
It continued east, out of hearing.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Vulture in the snow?

2010-12-09 Thread Sara Jane Hymes
Perhaps the Turkey Vulture was on the way towards sniffing out an animal
carcass. I was sort of surprised to notice a TV on the ground working
on an animal carcass around 10 a.m. this morning, in the open field area
south of Kendall. I sort of forgot about this, until seeing France's
post. A couple of Crows were also trying to feed on the carcass (I'm
not sure of the nature of the carcass, as I sort of didn't see, until
after I'd driven by and noticed the TV.)

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Dec 13 CAYUGA BIRD CLUB MEETING-Calif. Condors

2010-12-09 Thread confer
Hi Folks,

Thanks to Laurea for the plug for my presentation at the Monday night's
seminar, I want to add that my wife, Karen, who spent two years as Artist in
Residence for The Peregrine Fund's California Condor Release Program in
Northern Arizona will also be at the seminar to add her 2 cents (or more).
Also, Tim Hauck, who worked for the release program for 4.5 years, may also be
able to attend. So, the evening will provide some real expertise, as well as my
mutterings. I have compiled some nice slides from Karen, Tim, The Peregrine
Fund and some of my own shots. But who could fail to get some nice slides in
northern Arizona and nearby Utah.
I find it incumbent on me to add, the experimental release program is not
supported by any federal funds and continues on private donations.

Cheers,

John

[cayugabirds-l] Dec 13 CAYUGA BIRD CLUB MEETING-Calif. Condors

2010-12-09 Thread Laura Stenzler
Hi all,
Monday, Dec 13, is the next meeting of the Cayuga Bird Club at the Cornell Lab
of Ornithology. Our speaker this month is John Confer. EVERYONE is welcome to
attend. The lab doors open shortly after 7 pm, with refreshments at 7:15 and
the start of the meeting at 7:30 pm.
Here is info on the program. I hope to see you there!
Laura

Title: Reintroducing the California Condor
Speaker: John Confer, Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY.

The California Condor program provides one of the most visible reintroduction
efforts for an Endangered Species. An experimental population is centered in
northern Arizona. The released birds have produced young and radio telemetry
has revealed much about the birds' activities, including feeding and dispersal.
Lead particles ingested from game animals that have been shot is the principal
source of mortality. This presentation will provide an overview of the birds
released in Arizona and Utah.

[cayugabirds-l] Cooper's Hawk

2010-12-09 Thread Chris Pelkie
Yesterday about 7am, returning to the house with the dog, as I turned the
corner to the open garage door, a Cooper's Hawk flew out, I think from a perch
(that is, he wasn't just flying in and then back out). He/she landed on an
ornamental tree right in front of the house briefly, turned and eyeballed me
and doggie, then decided to beat feet as we were only 20' away.

Now, I'm an amateur and I know Sharpies are quite similar, but I reread all the
ID notes on both and having ID'd a Cooper's in the back woods a couple years
back by sight and his call, and another (or same) doing a surprise attack on a
crow in the front yard, I'm leaning to Cooper over Sharpie. Looked rather
large, distinct tail bands, curved tail profile though this was best seen in
his low-level maneuvering from garage to tree then away, so maybe Sharpie tails
are also curved in full flare?

I know why he was there: there's a gang of House Sparrows in residence in a
still-green and very thick vine we have on the front of the garage who patrol
the bird-feeder on the front porch. Also, there are a few MODOs eating the corn
on the porch, so one or the other was to be breakfast.

What I can't figure out is what he could have found to perch on: the most
likely spot near the door is the top of my tool cabinet, but it has a rather
slick piece of MDF on it. Maybe the handle? Not sure, as he saw me first and
flew out before I could see where he started from. The other interesting note
is that the door had only been open for about 10 min since dog and me exited to
begin the walk, so this was an opportunistic hawk!
