[cayugabirds-l] Redpoll subspecies link

2011-01-14 Thread grosb...@clarityconnect.com
Hello all,

Here's a great link to the best photos I've ever seen showing the 4 North
American Redpoll subspecies (2
Common and 2 Hoary). Take notice of the very large Greater Common Redpoll.
I've seen at least a good 6-
7 of these in CNY over the years. They stick out. They all aren't quite
this large, but the large size is
something to key into. They are often intermediate in size between a
nominate Common Redpoll and a
House Finch.

Thanks to Dave Wheeler for emailing this link to me.

cheers,
Matt Young

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Common Redpolls

2011-01-14 Thread Marie P Read
A large flock (I'd say 100+) Common Redpolls is now consorting with the even
larger flock of Snow Buntings on Mt Pleasant. As of this morning they were
foraging on the north side of Mt Pleasant Rd, from 8:30 until around 10:30 am
they were in the field just east of the radio tower, but now have moved into
the adjacent field toward the sheep farm in the valley west of the radio
tower.

The redpolls are feeding on the same vegetation as the buntings (I think it is
some alfalfa mixed in with grasses). I spent several hours there this morning
shooting video footage of the flocks (...and am now looking for a business
partner who simply loves editing video!!! I shot 8 GB of footage just
now...somewhat overwhelming to think of editing all that)

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant buntings

2011-01-14 Thread Candace Cornell
While out on a ride up Mt Pleasant at 12:30, my husband and I saw a flock of
500+ SNOW BUNTINGS two fields east of the observatory, across from a wooded
area. There were a least three if not more LAPLAND LONGSPURS on its fringe,
but no redpolls. The flock kept rolling over the field as it foraged until
it flew away in one massive swarm.

[cayugabirds-l] waterfowl SW corner Cayuga Lake

2011-01-14 Thread Elaina McCartney
Apologies if you got this twice, I just upgraded to Outlook and no email went
out for a while.

Ice formed overnight, with the edge defining the location of a large milling
raft of waterfowl.Three Tundra Swans continue to cruise around, and were
spotted earlier snoozing near the ice edge with a Great Black-backed Gull
standing nearby. Counts submitted to ebird:

Canada Goose 290
Tundra Swan 3
Canvasback 180
Redhead 1470
Great Black-backed Gull 1
gull sp. 6
Mourning Dove 2
Red-bellied Woodpecker 2
Downy Woodpecker 2
Hairy Woodpecker 2
Black-capped Chickadee 2
Tufted Titmouse 1
White-breasted Nuthatch 2
Carolina Wren 2
Dark-eyed Junco 1
American Goldfinch 11

More waterfowl now seem to be merging from from the north.

Hello again,

Some have mentioned a problem with the redpoll link, so here it is again.
Maybe the third time is a charm.
It's a great link!

[cayugabirds-l] Dodge Rd: Mockingbird, Bluebirds

2011-01-14 Thread Nari Mistry
On my walk down Dodge Rd this afternoon (2pm) I found a juvenile
N.MOCKINGBIRD in the roadside shrubs. It was quite tame and allowed
me to approach quite close.

A small group of 4 male E.BLUEBIRDs leapfrogged along the wires as I walked.

Some other birds: Redbellied Hairy Woodpeckers, House Finches and
lots of RTHawks. At one point as I was watching a low-flying RTHawk,
in the field of view but far away a cloud of white-winged small birds
arose settled. I walked all around for quite a while but could not
find the presumed Buntings again.

[cayugabirds-l] Seneca Falls Seneca Lake highlights

2011-01-14 Thread tigger64
An impressive group of large gulls were packed tightly together on Van Cleef
Lake in Seneca Falls:

~750 HERRING GULL
~25 GREAT BLACK-BACKED
1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED (adult)
1 ICELAND (adult)
1 GLAUCOUS (1st cycle)
no Ring-bills

Great birding conditions on the Geneva waterfront but nothing very unusual was
found. Counts approximate.

~2000 CANADA GOOSE
1 CACKLING GOOSE
8 PINTAIL
75 REDHEAD
1 RING-NECKED DUCK
5 GREATER SCAUP
75 LESSER SCAUP
6 BUFFLEHEAD
75 COMMON GOLDENEYE
8 HOODED MERGANSER
many COMMON MERGANSER
2 RUDDY DUCK
1 COOPER'S HAWK (a huge imm. female in a tree in Seneca Lake State Park)
1 GLAUCOUS GULL (1st cycle, marina end of Seneca Lake SP)
100 HERRING GULL
10 GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL

I don't recall seeing any Ring-bills, loons, grebes, scoters, and I couldn't
find any unusual geese aside from a Cackling that flew inland with Canadas.
Most of the ducks were close to the pier near the west end of the waterfront
and gave awesome views.

There was also a (seemingly) 1st-cycle Herring Gull with a glaring adult-like
yellow eye.
