[cayugabirds-l] Redpoll subspecies link
Hello all, Here's a great link to the best photos I've ever seen showing the 4 North American Redpoll subspecies (2 Common and 2 Hoary). Take notice of the very large Greater Common Redpoll. I've seen at least a good 6- 7 of these in CNY over the years. They stick out. They all aren't quite this large, but the large size is something to key into. They are often intermediate in size between a nominate Common Redpoll and a House Finch. Thanks to Dave Wheeler for emailing this link to me. cheers, Matt Young mail2web LIVE Free email based on Microsoft® Exchange technology - http://link.mail2web.com/LIVE -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Common Redpolls
A large flock (I'd say 100+) Common Redpolls is now consorting with the even larger flock of Snow Buntings on Mt Pleasant. As of this morning they were foraging on the north side of Mt Pleasant Rd, from 8:30 until around 10:30 am they were in the field just east of the radio tower, but now have moved into the adjacent field toward the sheep farm in the valley west of the radio tower. The redpolls are feeding on the same vegetation as the buntings (I think it is some alfalfa mixed in with grasses). I spent several hours there this morning shooting video footage of the flocks (...and am now looking for a business partner who simply loves editing video!!! I shot 8 GB of footage just now...somewhat overwhelming to think of editing all that) Marie Marie Read Wildlife Photography 452 Ringwood Road Freeville NY 13068 USA Phone 607-539-6608 e-mail m...@cornell.edu http://www.marieread.com -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant buntings
While out on a ride up Mt Pleasant at 12:30, my husband and I saw a flock of 500+ SNOW BUNTINGS two fields east of the observatory, across from a wooded area. There were a least three if not more LAPLAND LONGSPURS on its fringe, but no redpolls. The flock kept rolling over the field as it foraged until it flew away in one massive swarm. [cayugabirds-l] Dodge Rd: Mockingbird, Bluebirds
On my walk down Dodge Rd this afternoon (2pm) I found a juvenile N.MOCKINGBIRD in the roadside shrubs. It was quite tame and allowed me to approach quite close. A small group of 4 male E.BLUEBIRDs leapfrogged along the wires as I walked. Some other birds: Redbellied Hairy Woodpeckers, House Finches and lots of RTHawks. At one point as I was watching a low-flying RTHawk, in the field of view but far away a cloud of white-winged small birds arose settled. I walked all around for quite a while but could not find the presumed Buntings again. Nari Mistry, Ellis Hollow rd. -- Nari B. [cayugabirds-l] Seneca Falls Seneca Lake highlights

Most of the ducks were close to the pier near the west end of the waterfront and gave awesome views. There was also a (seemingly) 1st-cycle Herring Gull with a glaring adult-like yellow eye.
