[cayugabirds-l] Red-winged blackbirds
This morning: About a dozen red-winged blackbirds mixed in with starlings and two robins touched down to feed and splash on the pasture adjacent to our property. Welcome spring! RE: [cayugabirds-l] Red-winged blackbirds
In addition to these, the flowing field across from our house has had 3 female RWBB (for those who keep track of such things, like me), 3 KILLDEER, and one each male and female RUSTY BLACKBIRD in breeding (alternate) plumage. No meadowlarks yet, but the day is young. We have a young (SY) eastern White-crowned Sparrow at the feeder this morning. It's looking a bit forlorn with the driving snow. [cayugabirds-l] Red-winged Blackbirds
Hi all, Just now from my office window I watched a small flock of Red-winged Blackbirds. They were actually seeming to head towards west in this snowy weather. Yesterday, at Myers I was trying a video camera for its sharpness and range for a an upcoming project, when I saw two Killdeer at the spit. I actually did not even the scan the lake, I don't know why. I was planning on doing it, but it started to rain, so I packed up. [cayugabirds-l] Northern Shovelers et al.
The Northern Shovelers have spent the afternoon here near the shore in a tight pack. The water between the two docks is somewhat sheltered when it's stormy. There were no Canada Geese when I made the report, but they've since gathered a bit out from shore, several hundred. No Tundra Swans for 2 days. There's been a regular group of about a dozen Ruddy Ducks for more than a week, but only a few were visible today. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Northern Shovelers et al.
I just returned from a walk from the marina out to the lakeshore to see if Elaina's shovelers could be seen from there. It was pretty windy (and snowy) and, even though I could see her dock, I could not find the shovelers. However, there were two make Northern Shovelers bobbing in the froth just off the ice edge north of Hog Hole. And I had a small flock of Snow Geese, about two dozen white with one blue morph, winging their way slowly, just above my head, up to the lake. Tough day to be flying north! One of the geese was slightly smaller, and I thought of Ken. But I just couldn't bring myself to call it Ross's. Re:[cayugabirds-l] Red Winged Blackbirds/Grackles
Hi, For the first time in the 20 yrs we have been here, our yard with its two modest feeders has transformed into a set from The Birds - over a hundred grackles, RW blackbirds, and a few starlings have taken over the feeders, driving away the usual titmice, nuthatches, chickadees, goldfinches, cardinals, sparrows, juncos woodpeckers - even the RB hairy woodpeckers spent the afternoon hovering on the outskirts rather than challenge the masses of blackbirds. I know the other birds won't starve - they have been stashing as much as they've eaten all winter - but I am too cheap to be willing to feed this army of blackbirds! Will they be able to open black oil sunflower seed if I convert both feeders to that for awhile? Or is the only solution to stop feeding for awhile? They aren't interested in the small nyger feeder that's off to the side but, then again, neither are most of the regular feeder birds! Thanks for any suggestions - Alicia On 3/6/2011 5:32 PM, Donna Scott wrote: Along with all my other feeder birds on this snowy day, there are ~ 2-300 Red Winged Blackbirds and a dozen or so Grackles here at my feeder areas (along with 33 C.
