[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park this morning
I walked down to Stewart Park and birded it from 8-9 this morning. Here's my full checklist, with some highlights added. A note about the Scaup. A male scaup was sitting on a log just off from Swan Pen, preening and then swimming. I knew a scaup has been hanging around Stewart for a while, but I couldn't remember what species. I identified it in the field as Lesser, on the basis of head shape (this was actually fairly ambiguous, but I was leaning towards Lesser more than Greater) and flank color (heavy grey vermiculations rather than a purer white in Greater). Then I checked eBird and talked to Jay when I got back and realized that people had been seeing a Greater Scaup. Now I'm not sure which Scaup it is, and I'll have to go back and get pictures. [cayugabirds-l] Phalarope at Montezuma
I didn't see the Cackling or Greater White-fronted Geese this morning, but the resident Graylag is back with several Canada Geese at La Rue's Lagoon. I also spotted a Phalarope (Red-necked) in the shorebird unit (just before the sharp curve on the auto route) about 8:30 this morning. I went back through about 4:30 and watched it feeding all over the open water area for about 1/2 an hour. Not an expert on shorebirds but this one appeared to still have a trace of it's breeding plumage, buff color around throat, darker crest and back, and a very dark supercillium (distinguishing it from a Wilson's). -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Phalarope
Just a note to my previous post, I reviewed my photos and the Phalarope's beak seems very thick with a trace of yellow on the base. As I said I'm no expert but my Sibley's guide seems to lean towards a Red Phalarope, not a Red-necked. If anyone wants to see a photo, I'll be working at the Montezuma Visitor's Center Sunday (10 - 4 PM), or if anyone else was able to identify it, please post. Thanks. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
Re: [cayugabirds-l] Nelson's Sparrow, Hog Hole
Justin Proctor and Emilie Ospina joined me in searching for the Nelson's at Hog Hole this evening. We failed to find it, instead finding many Song Sparrows, at least four Swamp Sparrows, a Spotted Sandpiper, and the four Brant back in their usual spot at the entrance to the marina. We also checked the ducks at Stewart, where we had all the species I had this morning, plus about 20 female Common Mergansers. The scaup sp. was too far out to photograph well (my camera won't digiscope). Good birding, Nick On Sat, Oct 8, 2011 at 12:20 PM, J. [cayugabirds-l] Red Phalarope
Final note on the subject, the Phalarope at Montezuma's Shorebird Unit is a Red Phalarope. Thanks Jay Meena for your help. I last saw it near the bend on the auto route about 4:30 PM Saturday. It was moving around through the open water, often close to the road. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
