Hi Dave,

I have some video here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinicola/6483250349/in/photostream

And a photo here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pinicola/6483156077/in/photostream/

Both were taken through a scope with an iPhone and reflect that level
of quality. Still, better than nothing.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Thayer's Gull - Stevenson Rd. compost piles (Dryden)

2011-12-09 Thread Christopher Wood
The Thayer's Gull was still there when I left about 1:05. Thanks, Tom,
for posting. We miss you and look forward to your return to the Basin.

I was able to get a few photos that you can see in my eBird checklist
at the link below. This is a fairly normal-looking juvenile Thayer's
Gull (to the extent such a thing exists). I suspect it would be easier
to pass this off as a Herring Gull than an Iceland Gull. When scanning
through 1st-year Herring Gulls, look for the paler upperparts and note
that the primaries on this bird are dark brown, not black as in
Herring Gull. It's a bit more obvious in flight when the paler
underwing stands out, as does the distinctive upperwing pattern.

See this story for information on how to embed photos in an eBird checklist:

Re:[cayugabirds-l] cayugabirds-l digest: December 08, 2011

2011-12-09 Thread Gerry Rising

Some time ago I wrote a column about the merlin prey observed by a
ten-year-old Toronto birder named Hillary Dextrace. She was assisted in
her identifications by Chris Risley, using Trent University study skins.
The February 2004 column is at:

   www.buffalo.edu/~insrisg/nature/nw04/0216Raptorphilia.htm

Unfortunately, my source, which I believe was Ontario Birds, was not
cited in the column.

For those who do not have time to access the column, here are the
individuals Hillary found at this one nest (and checking only twice each
week): cedar waxwing 13, barn swallow 9, American goldfinch 5, unknown
sparrow 5, American robin 5, Northern cardinal 4, rock pigeon 4,
European starling 4, tree swallow 3, house finch 3, house sparrow 3,
blue jay 3, unknown flycatcher 2 and Eastern kingbird 2. And one each:
white-throated sparrow, downy woodpecker, purple finch, song sparrow,
yellow warbler, horned lark, dark-eyed junco and an unknown swallow.

Several things are worth noting about this list: only between 7 and 12
of these birds were house sparrows and starlings, thus less than 1/6 of
the birds were these aliens. Also note that 4 pigeons were among the
prey species.

[cayugabirds-l] Eared Grebe still present, but distant

2011-12-09 Thread Nicholas Sly
I scoped from the East end of Stewart Park for Tim's Eared Grebe from
11:15 to 11:45. The grebe was distant to the west: from my vantage
point it was between the red lighthouse and the large, tall marker
farther out on the lake. Over the course of the half hour it pushed
farther and farther northwest, until it was just a speck near the far
shore. If anyone is going for it now, maybe Hogs Hole would be a
better scoping spot. Hopefully it loops back in close.

Cheers,
Nick

[cayugabirds-l] sharpie again

2011-12-09 Thread Meena Haribal
Hi all,

Looks like there is a sharpie circling over, it is visible from between the
computer screen and the wall from window opening in my office. It is circling
and gaining height and thermal. This one was greyish, so I presume a male.
Now it has become invisible with naked eye and to binoculars.
