[cayugabirds-l] Blackbirds

2012-02-23 Thread Laura Stenzler

This evening (2/23) two flocks of several hundred Red-winged Blackbirds flew
over our house east of Ithaca (5:40pm). Common Grackles were mixed in with the
RWBBs. Last year we first saw them on March 10!

[cayugabirds-l] Double-crested Cormorant

2012-02-23 Thread Dave Nutter
For much of the winter, and as recently as 17 Feb I have only seen a single Double-crested Cormorant at the south end of Cayuga Lake. This past Sunday, 19 Feb, Norm Trigoboff reported to the Natural-History-L listserv that he saw a dead cormorant:I walked the eastern part of the Stewart Park shore and found a washed up cormorant that seemed much smaller up close than I would've thought.I didn't see any cormorants during the first half of the week, and I thought perhaps there were none here, but today while walking at Treman Marine Park I saw a living immature DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT resting on the substructure of one of the docks in the marina. [cayugabirds-l] Grackles/Titmice

2012-02-23 Thread Sara Jane Hymes
As we stepped outside of our house briefly to check 'progress' of Belle
Sherman Cottages just a minute ago, we had a flock of 25-30 COMMON
GRACKLES fly over our house in a Northern direction. We also heard 2
TITMICE duetting (singing/responding) back and forth.

[cayugabirds-l] Myers' Point

2012-02-23 Thread Carl Steckler
2 Western Griebs, one about 1/4 South and the other about 1/4 mile
North of Myers' Point. The one to the North seemed to not have it's neck
fully extended except when it dove. This one was also heard calling.

Also present were WW Scoter, Red-throated Loons and some Lesser Scoters.

[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park & Myers

2012-02-23 Thread Christopher Wood
Several of us checked Stewart Park this morning and did NOT see the
Eurasian Wigeon. When I first arrived there were over 163 Northern
Pintail and 88 American Wigeon, but many took off to the north shortly
thereafter. Highlights included two male American Green-winged Teal,
two Killdeer and good views of lots of ducks.

A complete eBird list is at the link below.

http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S9985653

Myers Point highlights included Western Grebe, adult male White-winged
Scoter, Snow Bunting, and American Pipit.

[cayugabirds-l] pine siskins

2012-02-23 Thread Susan Fast
Yesterday, Susie & I encountered 2 PINE SISKINS in Hammond Hill SF. These
were the first we have seen all winter. Today, we found 3 more along Burns
Rd. in Brooktondale. I suspect they are coming back from wherever they went
earlier to the south. Also found our first EARTHWORM of the season on the
roadside.

[cayugabirds-l] male kestrel behavior

2012-02-23 Thread Dave Nutter
A biologist once told me, "Everything is display." I wonder if eating on a conspicuous perch while turning so that one's colors may be viewed from every angle is a good way to advertise to any female who might be in the neighborhood that one is a good provider. --Dave NutterOn Feb 23, 2012, at 08:30 AM, Michele Mannella wrote:

[cayugabirds-l] FOY killdeer and others..

2012-02-23 Thread Michele Mannella
We had our FOY KILLDEER yesterday, and early this morning we heard a lone
HORNED LARK singing. The bluebirds were chiming in as well. They seem to have
chosen their nest box across the road while the house sparrows are guarding the
box in the corner of our yard.

of the telephone pole (above the sparrow nest box) eating a small rodent. As he
