[cayugabirds-l] Siskins
I meant to post yesterday, but forgot...I haven't seen any Siskin postings recently. We still have a few at our feeders. Yesterday we had 3 when I first looked outside at 8 or so, and there were 3 around again this morning as well. Both times with the flock of Goldfinches that frequent the yard. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Siskins
I have had 3 siskins coming in a flock of goldfinches here, as well, although I haven't seen the siskins since yesterday morning. Interesting coincidence given that we are only about 3 miles apart, but I doubt it could be the same flock (especially since that Evening Grosbeak you had a year or two ago never came by here!). Today a Purple Finch joined the goldfinches. [cayugabirds-l] Woodcock...finally
Shannon and I finally heard and saw a Woodcock this evening in the fields at the top of the property. Perhaps we had been going out too late given the lack of moonlight in the evening, or perhaps it was the elevation (1640-1680 Ft) but this was the first we've heard them this year. It was great to have this spring harbinger back at our place after reading about them for the past 2 weeks +... [cayugabirds-l] Active housing seekers!
John I put up a new bluebird box on the clothesline arm late yesterday. This a.m. the first inspection was done by our local, prospective, bluebird couple. They only have 5 other boxes from which to choose but this is a new style maybe the house sparrows will not like its light interior. Hopefully, the bluebirds will not have to challenge the sparrows or tree swallows. Today we checked 14 osprey platforms or nests on power line arms from east, south north of Union Springs to various points around refuge territory. Nothing but starlings on them. The evening flights of RWBBs, grackles, etc. to their roosts in around the refuge were spectacular, as usual. Trees so heavily laden with feathers looked like they were already leaved out. At the visitor's center I watched a robin hawking insects just at dark! Never noticed them do that before. The male shovelers were brightly colored at Larue's. So was the magnificent sunset!!! During our ride I saw 2 turkeys, 2 redtails, a kestral, a mockingbird lots of bulging buds on maple trees. At the refuge entrance the peepers were really loud, heard without my hearing aids! Mill pond here in the Springs still is an attraction for 8 to 12 bufflehheads 2 ring-neck ducks. Anyone tried the new bakery in King Ferry? We have one next to the Be Happy Cafe here in Union Springs. Gas is $3.80.9 for now. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Stony Point Bohemian Waxwings
I had to double-check the location myself, but I suppose a huge canyon like the one that cuts through the Hudson Highlands has some power to concentrate Bohemians as well as Redcoats and Hessians. -Geo -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
Re: [cayugabirds-l] Stony Point Bohemian Waxwings
Sorry , It's Robert Wehle State Park NW of Pulaski. I didn't know until I arrived there. Stony Point is the local name. Jeff Bolsinger has been up here today and passed the word on the very large flocks. I don't know what Jeff's total is , but I saw one flock of 500 another of at least 1000 and several smaller flocks. Dave Prosser was with me and I managed to get some video of the larger flock as they whirled around. Jeff pulled up after they left but he filled us in on his great sightings.
