[cayugabirds-l] New birds

2012-05-07 Thread Carol Keeler

Two of my regulars have finally come north. Late afternoon, yesterday, I saw
my catbird and hummingbird. Still no oriole. I thought I heard it yesterday,
but with the mockingbird here daily, I'm not positive. No siting of it yet.
The catbird came to the jelly feeder. I usually have my birds show up about a
week after they are posted in the Ithaca area. Only the oriole is off schedule.
I still have 6 White Crown Sparrows which seem to sing constantly. I
occasionally see the Rose Breasted Grosbeak.

[cayugabirds-l] Hawthorn Orchard - 7 May 2012 (Quieter, 9 Warbler sp. - Wilson's Warbler)

2012-05-07 Thread Christopher T. Tessaglia-Hymes
Today, I was at the Hawthorn Orchard from about 7:45 to 8:45am.

Very quiet start to the hour I was there. In part due to the cloud cover. Seems
birds are less vocal when it's really cloudy in the morning. Birds seemed to
become most active in the final 15 minutes of my time there. The most diversity
of warblers seemed to arrive up from the ravine/slope area to the North of the
NE corner.

Highlights:

1 Great Crested Flycatcher
NO Empidonax sp. flycatchers
NO Vireos
2-3 House Wrens
1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet (non-vocal, NE corner)
2-3 Gray Catbirds

2 Tennessee Warblers (non-vocal, one SW and one NE corner)
5-6 Nashville Warblers (Generally quiet, but these were the most vocal singers
of all warblers today; SW, SE, and NE corners)
1 Northern Parula (singing just North of NE corner)
NO Yellow Warblers
1 Chestnut-sided Warbler (non-vocal, NE corner)
2 Magnolia Warblers (non-vocal, one NE, one SW)
2 Black-throated Green Warblers (mostly non-vocal, sang once, NE corner)
1 American Redstart (non-vocal, male, NE corner)
2 Common Yellowthroats (singing)
1 WILSON'S WARBLER (new arrival, singing actively and easily seen in NE corner,
near top of slope)

3-4 White-throated Sparrows (NE corner, in hedgerow near Softball Field)
1 INDIGO BUNTING (flyover, buzzy ringing flight note)
2 Eastern Meadowlarks (in grass around retention pond on South side of the
North soccer field; SW of Reis Tennis Center)
2 Baltimore Orioles (NE corner of Hawthorn Orchard)

I am curious to know what this next weather system will bring in, despite the
forecast rain overnight tonight. A Low Pressure System is approaching to the SW
of our area and is forecast to be centered over Detroit, MI by 2AM tomorrow.
This may create a slight SW to NE push for more migrants into our region.

Good birding!

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

[cayugabirds-l] Hawthorn additions

2012-05-07 Thread Stuart Krasnoff
I must have just missed Chris in the Hawthorn's where I meandered from about
0845 to 1000 h. Most of the same birds for me including the singing WIlson's
Warbler in the north central part of the tract. I can add a Black-throated
Blue Warbler male singing briefly and a Red-eyed Vireo both on the slope to the
ravine where I also had eye-level views of the Great-crested Flycatcher.

Best...Stuart

[cayugabirds-l] New arrival

2012-05-07 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
New arrivals today were Willow and Alder Flycatcher. Also banded three Pine
Siskins.
Looks like they may hang around to nest again this year; weve had at least four
consistently through winter/spring.

Sandhill Cranes may be nesting in Queen Catharine Marsh, Schuyler Cty. Two were
foraging a couple of weeks ago and one was sighted foraging in the same area
yesterday. The dirt road that runs north/south on the east of the IBA/BCA marsh
is
called Rock Cabin Rd and at about the middle is an observation platform; the
cranes
have been seen (conveniently) in that area.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler directions

2012-05-07 Thread Matthew Medler
Just in case anybody else was interested in looking for this bird but wasn't
clear on where it was, here are the coordinates:

 42.455841, -76.502954

Google Maps is showing the road name as Pier Rd./Cayuga Waterfront Trail. The
bird was singing from high up in a cluster of large sycamores, right by the tee
box for the 3rd hole of the golf course. The fire department training building
that Jay mentioned is the first building beyond the sycamores on Pier Rd.

Thanks, Drew! Good luck to others who go to look for it!

[cayugabirds-l] Orchard Oriole question

2012-05-07 Thread Betsy Darlington
This AM I was on the E. Ithaca Rec. Trail (the one that goes to Game Farm
Rd.). I heard a single clear loud call note, all one pitch, and repeated
several times over a period of several minutes. The quality of the sound
was much like that of a Balt. Oriole, but when I finally spotted the bird,
it didn't look like that, but maybe an Orchard Oriole. Has anyone seen one
there recently? It was in the eastern section of the trail, east of the
constructed wetland.

[cayugabirds-l] Mourning and Hooded at Shindagin

Enjoyed a very bird-full walk with my family along Shindagin Hollow

Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, Ovenbird, A. Redstart,
Yellow-rumped, Magnolia, Black-and-white, Common Yellowthroat,
Canada, Nashville, Blackburnian, Yellow, Hooded, Mourning, and
Northern Parula). Lots of Scarlet Tanagers, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks,
Least Flycatchers, and other birds as well. Did not hear Winter Wren
or Louisiana Waterthrush, but we didn't get there until 8 am.

Another Hooded Warbler was singing along Bailor Road.

Subject: [nfc-l] Night Migration - 6-7 May 2012 - Relatively Quiet

Last night, I *finally* got my Evans-style flowerpot microphone (Knowles
Element EK3029c) back up on the roof (Etna, NY) and recorded from about 10:00pm
to 5:00am, as a dry run. Early this morning, I quickly browsed through my
sounds, looking for anything of interest. WeatherTAP showed very strong
reflectivity early last night to the WSW of Ithaca, NY, but nothing that would
dump huge quantities of birds into our local area.

Highlights from the night include:

1 Black-throated Green Warbler (in full song at 10:13pm)
2 Black-throated Blue Warblers
1 Chipping Sparrow
1 White-throated Sparrow
1 Black-crowned Night-Heron (02:16am)
1 Virginia Rail (04:11am)
2 Black-billed Cuckoos (one at 02:19am and one at 04:14am; attached audio file:
120507_16-bit Black-billed Cuckoos.wav)
1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak
3 Ovenbird-like upsweeps (not Ovenbirds)
1 Indigo Bunting

There was one call that I find very strange. It is about 18ms in duration,
descending; the frequency range is 16.17kHz to 17.99kHz. It is inaudible
without slowing it down. It doesn't quite sound right for Flying Squirrel, of
which we have visiting the feeders at times, but even those are somewhat
audible in the recordings. This note is completely inaudible and there are no
other reference sounds around it in time. I'm a bit baffled. If anyone has any
ideas, I'd appreciate it. The sound is attached: 120507.023016_16-bit_17kHz
Seep.wav. You can use software such as Raven to slow it down and view it
spectrographically - I have removed the LF band of peepers and other ambient
noise and amplified the signal.

Lastly, there was a single distant, but close-enough truck backing up in the
silence of the night. I really thought I had recorded a Saw-whet Owl. Upon
reviewing the entire clip series, it is indeed a just-out-of-earshot truck
backing up. There were very few other reference sounds to easily identify it as
the backup beeps of a truck. But, what the heck is a service truck doing out at
03:00am? Do dump trucks really operate that early in the outskirts of Ithaca?

Nice diversity, very quiet night, though.

I look forward to recording again tonight, even though it will be raining -
South winds are in the forecast for us - we'll see.

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

SWALLOW-TAILED KITE
WHIP-POOR-WILL
PROTHONOTARY WARBLER

CLAY-COLORED SPARROW

Compiler’s Note

If you hadn’t noticed, migration happened this week. Due to the
extrordinary number of arrivals this week I will list a smaller number of
specialties and then list the new arrivals with dates and locations although
most of the warblers and other songbirds are being seen in many locations.

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)

Shorebird numbers are on the increase this week. PECTORAL SANDPIPER, LEAST
SANDPIPER, DUNLIN, GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, KILLDEER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER,
WILSON’S SNIPE,  and SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER were reported. The visitor’s center,
Larues, and Benning Marsh were the best locations.
5/1: Two BLACK TERNS were seen at Tschache Pool.
5/6: Two PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS have returned to Armitage Road on the west
side of the canal bridge. 7 BLACK TERNS were seen at the end of VanDyne Spoor
Road. Today 12 were counted.

Derby Hill Bird Observatory

It was an amazing week at Derby. Over an eight day period 21,513 raptors
were counted. The biggest news was a SWALLOW-TAILED KITE seen on 5/5, only the
second of its kind ever recorded at Derby. The first was seen in 1976.
Overshadowed by this great find was a PACIFIC LOON seen over the lake on5/6.

Onondaga County

5/1: A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was found along the Erie Canal Trail in
Fayetteville. Another was seen in the same area on 5/3.
5/5: A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW and an ORCHARD ORIOLE were found at Green
Lakes State Park

Oswego Couty

5/6: WHIP-POOR-WILLS were heard calling from Roosevelt Road north of
Oneida Lake.

Oneida County

5/6: An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen and nicely photographed in Camden.

[cayugabirds-l] no Yellow-throated but yes Cerulean at Renwick woods

2012-05-07 Thread Kenneth Victor Rosenberg
When I got down to the Ithaca City golf course this evening (6:30-7:15), it was
raining lightly but steadily, and I could not locate the Yellow-throated
Warbler by sight or song. A loose group of 10+ YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, with
several singing, were moving around the sycamores and foraging in the rain over
Fall Creek. I did hear several distinct songs from a CERULEAN WARBLER, though,
coming from Renwick Woods across the creek. A silent Western PALM WARBLER
appeared with the Yellow-rumps, and an AMERICAN REDSTART and WOOD THRUSH were
also audible from Renwick.
