[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods Warblers

2012-09-16 Thread Ann Mitchell
Today around l:30 I birded part of the Wilson Trail. The warblers seemed to
be around the foot bridge. The main group was on the path by the pond. I
saw Tennessee, Pine, Wilson's Black-throated Green, Magnolia, Blackpoll,
Nashville Warblers and a Redstart. There were close to 20 warblers there,
but couldn't see them all because they moved through very quickly. Hope
they will be around tomorrow.
Good Birding, Ann

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-shafted Flicker question

2012-09-16 Thread Candace Cornell
I'm in the Adirondack's and am amazed at the hundreds and hundreds of
Yellow-shafted Flickers I am seeing for the past two weeks. They are in
flocks of 5-12+ all over Essex and Franklin counties, feeding by road sides
through meadows and forests alike.

Are they small foraging groups, which reassemble into large groups for
their nocturnal migration?

With the dampness and sandy soil up here, there are always plenty of ants
to satiate them.

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Sunday 9/16/12

2012-09-16 Thread david nicosia
Went to Montezuma Today with Melissa Penta and her
husband, Diego. Some birds we wanted to see
were the RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER, AMERICAN AVOCET, HUDSONIAN GODWITS
and CATTLE EGRET.

We arrived at Towpath Road and saw Ken Rosenberg.
Of course, he was on the phalarope, godwits and avocet
already in Knox-Marcellus Marsh. The lighting was OK
especially when the sun was behind the clouds.
Three down. Thanks Ken! Then another gentlemen
pointed out the CATTLE EGRET in a bush on the other
side of the levee in Puddler's Marsh. 4 down. Then Ken
got on a distant BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER too. All 5.
It really helps to be among some great birders!!!

We also had SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, SEMIPALMATED
PLOVER, BLACK BELLIED PLOVER, AMERICAN
GOLDEN PLOVERS. many yellowlegs. a lone LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHER flew in and had a few DUNLIN with it.
There were also 3 SANDHILL CRANES that flew in and landed
and likely another 3 that flew by. I probably forgot
some birds. The RED-NECKED PHALAROPE and HUDSONIAN
GODWITS were very distant.

Then we went to the visitor's center and wildlife drive.
The visitor's center had a couple PINTAIL among other
typical waterfowl and shorebirds.  There were a few LEAST SANDPIPERS
at LARUE'S with a bunch of KILLDEER.

Then at the new shorebird area...there was another RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE close to the road. Melissa Penta go some
great pictures of this bird which she graciously shared with me(I left
my camera's memory card in my computer. g.).

See http://www.flickr.com/photos/davenicosia/sets/72157631552306254/

This time we got tremendous views of this bird. The bird was not far from the
bend
close to some stubble with a couple yellowlegs. wow.

We also got the CATTLE EGRET at Benning marsh (same bird probably

flew over from Puddler's)

[cayugabirds-l] Myers, Durland, compost, Freese

2012-09-16 Thread Jay McGowan
Yesterday morning at Myers I noticed the first significant movement of
Blue Jays I have seen this fall, with several hundred moving south
along the east shore. The only other bird of note was a COMMON TERN
flying north up the lake against the strong winds.

This morning I walked around the Durland Preserve in Ellis Hollow.
Highlights were two LINCOLN'S SPARROWS near the entrance (first of the
fall, although at least three other people saw Lincoln's Sparrow this
morning too!) and a male HOODED WARBLER. At the compost piles, the 2nd
or 3rd cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was still present. Finally, I
walked around the community gardens on Freese Road, where I saw dozens
of Song and Savannah sparrows, Field Sparrow, Indigo Bunting, and two
PALM WARBLERS.

[cayugabirds-l] Park Preserve, 9-10 am Sunday

2012-09-16 Thread Laura Stenzler
Good morning,
I walked around the Park Preserve (Dryden) this morning from 9 - 10 am.
Pretty quiet most of the time, but I did come across a few migrants. Along the
west edge, 2 MAGNOLIA WARBLERS; at the entrance to the trail to the lean-to, a
PHILADELPHIA VIREO (quite low in the tree, very yellow, good look at the dark
lores) and a BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER; and one NASHVILLE WARBLER along the
Blue trail, just before it goes into the evergreens. Plus numerous COMMON
YELLOW-THROATS, 3 TOWHEES, SONG SPARROWS, GOLDFINCHES and lots of BLUE JAYS
flying over in groups of 2-8.
Earlier in the morning we had a BLACK and WHITE WARBLER at our house.
Happy birding!
Laura
