Hi all,

There are currently about 100 REDPOLLS at the front lab feeders, along with
a smattering of siskins.

RE:[cayugabirds-l] OOB/OT: avoiding bird strikes by aircraft

2013-01-18 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
Dave,
Back in the early 80s, a few of us on the Cape May raptor banding team were
helping
to establish similar stations in Israel. At that time the Israeli Air force had
a
similar migration avoidance program in effect. Their motto which we still have
on a
poster here was Take Care, We Share the Air. During periods of peak migration
the
Israeli airways affected were shut down.

Trip to Sodus Point yesterday produced huge rafts of Oldsquaw, good numbers of
WW
Scoters and one Black Scoter swimming in dramatic seas in the lighthouse
channel.
Scoured the area between here and there with no winter owls found.

[cayugabirds-l] Iceland Gull, Stevenson Road

2013-01-18 Thread Jay McGowan
An intermediate 1st cycle ICELAND GULL was on the compost piles at
Stevenson Road this morning.

Yesterday, two different observers reported a lightly colored Iceland and
an Iceland on the slightly darker side of 'typical' a few minutes apart,
so it remains to be seen if more than one bird is around.

[cayugabirds-l] Greater Common Redpoll at Lab feeders

2013-01-18 Thread Tom Schulenberg
As Brad mentioned earlier, there is a large (and typically skittish) flock
of redpolls at the feeders at the Lab of Ornithology. Matt Young picked out
at least one (a female), and possible a second (a male), Greater Common
Redpoll (Acanthis flammea rostrata) from this group. Worth keeping an eye
on these birds today.

[cayugabirds-l] sick Redpoll

2013-01-18 Thread Donna Scott
For several days, I have seen a Redpoll that seems lethargic and with its
feathers all puffed out.
It eats a lot, but seems not to have the energy to fly around or up off the
ground very much.

This morning, to rescue it from possible capture by my bird-seed-eating dog,
who was out with me while I was filling feeders, I caught the bird in my hand
and took it up to the deck that is one story off the ground and set it down in
a safe place.
It flew away from where I put it and since I have company, I was not able to
keep track of it after that.
Its butt feathers are a yellow color, so it has some bird diarrhea perhaps.

Any advice?

RE: [cayugabirds-l] sick Redpoll

2013-01-18 Thread Wesley M Hochachka
Donna,

My guess is that the bird has salmonellosis. Unfortunately, I think that
every year that there is a major redpoll irruption, some birds start dying of
salmonellosis: we see redpolls that are listless, sitting for long periods of
time motionless and with their feathers puffed up enormously...and then they
die and drop to the ground. To the best of my knowledge, there is nothing that
can be done about an individual sick redpoll in that case. However, I also
think that this means that you should start thinking about preventative
measures like:

- If you handle a sick redpoll, wash your hands very thoroughly (same
advice as for the flu) afterwards.

- If you have a pet that could eat dead or dying birds, do what you
can to minimize the potential for pet and bird coming into contact for your
pet's sake.

- You also have to decide on the extent to which you want to try to
minimize spread of the pathogen, like moving feeders to a different location
away from contaminated ground, adding new feeders or spacing existing feeders
further apart to lower the rates of contact between birds, or as an extreme
case taking your feeders down for a while to disperse the birds that are now
visiting.
Regarding this last item, I'm not suggesting that the redpoll contracted the
disease at your feeders: redpolls are gregarious, and so they are a species
that makes it easy for pathogens to spread. Also, as I wrote, redpoll
irruptions and salmonella outbreaks seem to go hand in hand, so while disease
and death are unfortunate, your finding a sick bird is unfortunately not
unexpected.

Wesley Hochachka

I encourage everyone to remain familiar with the eList rules, which are

[cayugabirds-l] A little birding this morning, Rough-legged Hawks, Snow Buntings and Longspurs.

2013-01-18 Thread Jeff Gerbracht
Given the paucity of Rough-legged Hawk sightings, at least locally, I was
surprised to find 2, one just south of Purvis Rd (south of Dryden) and the
other in the fields along Creamery Rd. I didn't see the one at Goetchius,
though I looked. From Cornell Lane, I spied a large flock of birds on the
road south, working some freshly spread manure, drove around to Daisy
Hollow Rd, and the flock was just to the south, nearly all Horned Larks but
with a couple Snow Buntings and Lapland Longspurs mixed in. From the
Dryden area, I decided to heard north and west, driving through the dairies
(not much there) and ending up at Milliken Station BR, Lots of
Mallards and Canada Geese, but the lake was choppy and I was being blasted
by the wind off the lake, needless to say, I headed back south to warmer
climes.

   Cheers,
  Jeff

[cayugabirds-l] Cooper's

2013-01-18 Thread Bill Mcaneny
About noon today, I heard a rush of wings at the feeders behind the house,
then a e-e-ew, e-e-ew. A quick look revealed a Cooper's Hawk perched on
the back of a patio chair. Naturally, I had just put my camera away, and by
the time I got it out again, the hawk was gone. I checked the feeders at
the side of the house just in time to see the hawk fly away towards the
road. A day earlier, Shirley had seen what she thought was a Cooper's on
the phone wires near the house. Might have been the same bird. Might see
it again, but it may be hungry since we detected no victims.

A possible victim in the near future may be a redpoll all puffed up and not
showing any inclination the take evasive action every 30 seconds or so. Got
to clean up the feeding area, per Wesley's suggestion.
