Pulled the first tick of the year out of my side last night. Hardly seems warm enough. Got it in the Danby area probably. An Ixodes, the one notorious for carrying Lyme disease. Tried the circling it with your finger trick. Gave it five minutes, but it didn't pull out its head. The tweezers did the trick. Ixodes is pretty easy to ID to genus with a 10x hand lens. It's the only tick here with a scutum (dark shiny area), no festoons (rectangular areas at the hind end) and an anal groove that surrounds the anus anteriorly (see the attached diagrams; #43 points out the groove). . -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ -- tick.pdf Description: tick.pdf ___ CNY-Naturalhistory mailing list cny-naturalhist...@darkstar.cortland.edu http://darkstar.cortland.edu/mailman/listinfo/cny-naturalhistory

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Redpolls again!
I've had Redpolls non-stop through the winter, never less than about 50 in the neighborhood. Although I suspended feeding them niger several times, they stayed and ate black oil sunflower seed. Multiple Fox Sparrows are singing now. Several Song Sparrows this morning. Wood Ducks have been visiting my pond each morning since it opened a few days ago. -Geo -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] YB Sapsucker; Raven, other yard birds
This morning the first YB Sapsucker flew in and explored all his favorite trees in our yard. A Raven flew low circling overhead -- looking for something? I found a Song Sparrow sitting on a stump, singing very very quietly to himself, practicing his song. As I waited, he grew more confident and louder, but not full throated yet. There have been lots of his family around to learn from. The one 'tame' female Redpoll I mentioned earlier is still around. She looks very fat and bloated -- even in warm sunshine on warmer days this week. Could this be some sickness (-- or is she ready to lay eggs!) ? I searched all around for a Fox Sparrow, but no luck. Redpolls continue to come to my feeders in Newfield. There were 10 on April 1 and only 8 that I saw today. Having had none here all winter, it seems odd to have them hanging around for the past week. Re: [cayugabirds-l] BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at Sapsucker Woods
Hi, Here are a few more details on my hard-to-believe sighting of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at Sapsucker Woods. I noticed a flock of birds dropping into a bare treetop outside my office window — raising my binoculars I saw that they were waxwings and counted 16. Although they were facing away against the gray sky, what was most noticeable was the bold white linear patch on every birds' wing. This was perplexing at first, as the overall coloration of the birds did not strike me as odd, and they all appeared the same size (so had to be Cedars. Right?). I struggled to make out color on the under tail coverts and finally one bird turned and showed its dark red under tail. At this point I knew they were BOHEMIANS (this all took just a few seconds), so my next instinct was to get a photo, which would mean using my iPhone through the binoculars. I reached down for the phone, began to set it up to take the pictures, but when I glanced up the flock of birds was gone. I did not see whether they flew away or dropped down, or what direction they might have gone. They initial had come in from the south or southeast, from over the building or from the parking lots. I hope they stick around and someone can relocate them Sapsucker Woods tomorrow. I have not noticed ANY fruits around except for some withered black privets, but in the spring I have seen waxwings feeding on flower buds and petals. It is also interesting that Bohemians, even during flight years, tend to show up very late in the winter (March, April), even though they really don'e penetrate much to the south of us in these winters. Good luck to all who search for these gorgeous birds! KEN Ken Rosenberg Conservation Science Program Cornell Lab of Ornithology 159 Sapsucker Woods Rd.
