[cayugabirds-l] Probable RUFF in Genesee County NY

2013-04-18 Thread mmance
I know this is out of the immediate region but I thought folks may be
interested in this bird.

This evening at Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge in the Kumpf Marsh I spotted
a male transitional plumage RUFF. The photo is on the link below (it was
sunset so the light is not great). Hopefully the bird sticks around for more
to enjoy! It is on Feeder road, if you park at the trail head and walk to
feeder road turn right the bird was on the left hand side in among many other
pipers.

Good luck!

[cayugabirds-l] Thursday Odds & Ends

2013-04-18 Thread bob mcguire
Although I hadn't planned on it initially, I ended up taking the day off and
driving around the lake - out ahead of the coming rain but in the teeth of a
strong wind.

Walking the east trail at South Monkey Run, I ran across several Fox Sparrows
in a large flock of Juncos near the parking lot, at least two Pine Warblers
singing high up in the pines (both White and Red Pine), two Ruby-crowned and
several more Golden-crowned Kinglets and a drumming Ruffed Grouse.

I hadn't been to the Edwards Cliff Preserve this spring, and yet I know that it
is always good for a surprise or two. After the Mockingbird singing as I
parked, I soon ran into several Field Sparrows, an Eastern Towhee, and heard
from the edge of the gorge, my first Louisiana Waterthrush of the year. Further
down the trail I flushed a Woodcock that had been foraging in a wet section and
then another Ruffed Grouse.

Coming back into town, I joined the small crowd at the swan pen for great looks
at the visiting Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warbler (thanks to Jay's post and
Dave's phone call).

At that point I figured that I was on a roll and headed directly for the Lott
Farm just south of Seneca Falls. I checked in at the office and then spent a
good half hour driving up and down the paths looking for Upland Sandpiper. They
finally appeared at the far north end of the property, just as I was leaving;
what appeared to be a mated pair, easy to spot in the very short grass.

Purple Martins were flying around the nest condo at the MAC. Several dozen
Yellowlegs (both species) were foraging in the flooded field along Carcross
Road. A family of Trumpeter Swans continued at Railroad Road. And two Wilson's
Snipe were at Bennings Marsh. Otherwise, the water levels were high in the
traditional shorebird spots and most of the ducks had moved on (leaving small
numbers of Northern Shoveler, Gadwall, Northern Pintail, American Wigeon, and
both Teal).

I haven't seen anyone mention it yet, but Pete's Treats is open for the season.
Their milk shakes are just as good as ever. But they don't seem to have any
Snappys.

[cayugabirds-l] Mundy/ Beebe lake walk during lunch

2013-04-18 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Today for lunch walk I did a round of Beebe Lake and Mundy WG. Highlights were,
one Horned Grebe on the lake, several Ruby-crowned Kinglets behind Mann
Library and a Broad-winged Hawk, which was actually heading south despite of
stiff south winds.

Right now Song Sparrow is hopping around the yard eating god knows what, but
not singing.

[cayugabirds-l] Purple Finch continued

2013-04-18 Thread W. Larry Hymes
I suspected that once I posted that I hadn't had any male purple finch
since last Thursday, they would reappear. Right on cue, a male showed
up a few minutes ago.

[cayugabirds-l] house sparrow question

2013-04-18 Thread Michele Mannella
I work at Cornell, and I currently have a pair of house sparrows *trying*
to build a nest on the window sill, under the air conditioner. I say trying
because for the past two weeks they work tirelessly at it, but by the
afternoon their whole project is gone. I don't think it is the wind, but
rather one of them getting all flustered and knocking the thing down. Could
this be simply an inexperienced young pair who have chosen a poor spot? Or
is this not unusual for house sparrows?

It is beginning to be quite comical for me and my office mate, particularly
this morning when the male arrived with a seedy/leafy stick bigger than
himself.

Any insight is appreciated!
Michele

[cayugabirds-l] EIRW walk to work

2013-04-18 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,
The walk along East Ithaca Recreation Way (EIRW) in the morning to work, I saw
a Barn Swallow, Chipping Sparrow, Northern Flicker and an angry looking Ruby
Crowned Kinglet singing his song. A few TVS were floating in the air. And of
course other usual birds.
>From office window saw two Common Mergansers fly over our office from Fall
>Creek.
Yesterday at Mundy WG, there were two Hermit Thrushes.

Cheers
