Greetings. This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of
March 10, 2014

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)
3/11: A SHORT-EARED OWL was spotted from VanDyne Spoor Road.
3/15: 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen from East Road.
Oneida county
3/10: A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen on Lewis Road in the Town of Marshall.
3/16: A SNOWY OWL was seen at the Oneida County Airport.
Onondaga County
3/11: A RED-NECKED GREBE was spotted on Onondaga Lake at Willow Bay Park.
3/14: 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen on Gorham Road south of Elbridge.
Another was seen the next day.
3/15: The Beaver Lake Nature Center SAW-WHET OWL was again seen on the Bog
Trail. A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen soaring from Cedervale Road east of Marcellus.
3/16: A GREAT HORNED OWL, a BARRED OWL and a NORTHERN SHRIKE were all
found at Three Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville. A PEREGRINE FALCON, aLESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL and 2 ICELAND GULLS were seen at the Inner Harbor on West
Kirkpatrick Street in Syracuse.
3/17: A PEREGRINE FALCON was spotted on West Sorrell Hil Road south of
Baldwinsville.
Derby Hill
Cold weather made for a slow week but there were birds to be had. In all
206 raptors were counted. One GOLDEN EAGLE seen on 3/11 was the only one
counted. RED-TAILED HAWKS make up the bulk of the count but RED-SHOULDERED
HAWKS are starting to be seen. Also seen this week were HARRIER, COOPER’S HAWK,
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, KESTREL, TURKEY VULTURE, BALD EAGLE, MERLIN and PEREGRINE
FALCON.
Madison County
3/16: A SNOWY OWL was seen near Peterboro south of Canastota
Herkimer County
3/10: A SNOWY OWL was seen on Yule Corners Road near Jordanville
3/12: 3/12: A NORTHERN SHRIKE wasa seen at a residence north of Dolgeville.
Jefferson County
3/13: A SNOWY OWL was seen on Point Peninsula.west of Watertown.
