[cayugabirds-l] Bobolinks

2014-05-05 Thread Susan Fast
This morning at 0700, Susan heard BOBOLINKS in the big field opposite the
house.  I walked the field immediately and found 12.  Along Burns Rd, at
another large hay field, I could hear many more singing.  Yay!

[cayugabirds-l] White-eyed Vireo still present at Sherwood Platform + Nashville Warbler

2014-05-05 Thread Diane Morton
Ken and I had a very brief but very nice visit to Sapsucker Woods' Wilson
trail this morning. Among many Ruby-crowned Kinglets at the Sherwood
Platform was the White-eyed Vireo-- very close for excellent looks. Just a
little further up the trail near the bench was a very bright Nashville
Warbler among a bunch of Yellow-rumped Warblers. We also saw a small flock
of Palm Warblers (about 8 of them) near the start of Wilson trail north, in
the grass east of the wetlands. Three Black-and-White Warblers and several
Yellow Warblers were also along the Wilson trail. Wish we had been able to
spend more time there--

[cayugabirds-l] Palm Warblers at Stewart Park

2014-05-05 Thread Kenneth V. Rosenberg
Yesterday afternoon, I saw at least 4 PALM WARBLERS at the swan pen at Stewart
Park -- 3 were dull Western Palm Warblers and 1 was a very bright Eastern
Palm Warbler, making for an excellent comparison of these two taxa that might
someday constitute a new split. These were hunkering from the wind at the se
corner of the pond, feeding on the ground and sallying for insects low over the
water along with several YELLOW-RUMPED, YELLOW WARBLERS, and a nice male
AMERICAN REDSTART.

[cayugabirds-l] Orchard Oriole, Myers Point

2014-05-05 Thread Jay McGowan
At least one ORCHARD ORIOLE has returned to Myers Point. An adult male was
singing cheerily from near the entrance, then foraging and singing from
cottonwoods over the camping area and then from across the creek on Salt
Point. Not much moving on the lake, but at least five HORNED GREBES are
still around. Two immature BONAPARTE'S GULLS and a 1st cycle LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL were also on and around the spit, and Robin's adult
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON continued in the marsh near Ladoga.

Palm Warblers were thick at Stewart Park this morning as well, with at
least *11* foraging on the lawn between the tennis courts and the swan pen
and another handful singing along the south edge of the swan pen with
Yellow, Yellow-rumped, and Nashville warblers.

[cayugabirds-l] NOT a Gray-Cheeked Thrush

2014-05-05 Thread W. Larry Hymes
In discussing with my son, Chris, I must have seen a HERMIT THRUSH,
rather than the Gray-Cheek that I reported yesterday. I only had a
short profile look. It appeared a drab brown with what I thought was an
incomplete eye-ring. What really threw me off is that I could not make
out any reddish color to the tail. But again, I only had a side view.
I've since learned from Matt Medler's average first arrival date
spreadsheet that Gray Cheeks should not be here for another couple
weeks. Based on hindsight I should have suspected Hermit when it landed
in the yard for a couple seconds, during which time it cocked its tail
up like a Hermit would do.

[cayugabirds-l] Female RWBB

2014-05-05 Thread Bill Mcaneny
I don't recall any reports of female REDWINGED BLACK BIRDs this spring.
Maybe it is just a memory problem on my part. Or maybe nobody finds them
worth reporting. The reason for my interest at this time is that we just had
one at our feeders. There have been one or more males around the yard. But
this is the first female this year. It is like finding a new species because
they are so different from the males. Perhaps a couple of you could
enlighten me on what you have seen so far. Dave N, do you have a record of
the FOY this year?

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Female RWBB

2014-05-05 Thread Jay McGowan
I have seen them here and there for at least two weeks if not longer,
although there definitely seem to be more around this week than before.
Below-species distinctions like that do often get lost, both on the
listservs and in eBird, but are, in my opinion and as you suggest, worth
keeping track of, so thanks for the reminder. Finally, for the sake of
consistency I will note that the banding code abbreviation is RWBL,
blackbird being a single word.

Cheers,
Jay

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Utilities and osprey nest

2014-05-05 Thread Candace Cornell
Bill—

I've been told that NYSEG has a small annual budget for environmental
stewardship projects, including putting up osprey poles and platforms in
this area. As a landowner, you can supposedly contact NYSEG and request
that an osprey platform be put on a specific pole that is carrying live
wires. If it's the right height pole and in good condition, in a good
habitat for osprey, and if it's within their budget, NYSEG will consider
it. Landowners can offer to pay for the platform, too. ($50-100 for just a
platform, Putting up poles is the expensive part..). They can't put up
platforms and non-electrified poles on private land, but can do it on
public land, as they have in Lansing.

NYSEG has been very generous to the osprey in our area and I hope that they
can continue to champion them. Paul Paradine is the regional NYSEG forester
that has been instrumental in putting up osprey poles and platforms in our
area of the lake. There's a NYSEG representative from Auburn who checks the
nests on Routes 520. I am not sure who covers your Union Springs.. To talk
to a NYSEG forester, call 1-800-572-.

Do you have the perfect pole for an osprey platform? If so, let me know.
The osprey population is increasing exponentially on Cayuga and many more
osprey platforms will be needed in the near future. Your area is an
important osprey hot spot!.

Cheers!
Candace
