[cayugabirds-l] Monk Parakeets nesting in Hector
We have confirmed a pair of Monk Parakeets building a nest in a barn on the Wickam Farm. The owner and son noticed the birds about 3 days ago. He contacted Kevin (McGown) to come and confirm. The farm is on 5559 Rt414. This is just North of Sunoco and South of Hector Vineyard. Go down Tango Oaks Road which looks like a double gravel driveway and it is the first barn in the right. The very kind owner welcomes bird watchers and I told him I'd suggest birders patronize the nearby Hazlitt and Hector vineyards in thanks. I'll post a video to the Cayuga Birds Facebook page shortly. [cayugabirds-l] Owego Cliff Swallows
Finding myself in Owego this afternoon for the Strawberry Festival, I walked out onto the beautiful Court Street bridge to enjoy the Cliff Swallows. There are about 50 jug nests directly under the sidewalk on the upstream side of the bridge, so the parents were continually coming and going right beneath my feet, providing great topside closeups. -Geo -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Correction :Re: Monk Parakeets nesting in Hector
I meant to say that they were building what COULD be a nest but it also could be something they might just roost in. It is still a work in progress. [cayugabirds-l] Mich Hollow Red-Shoulders and Acadian
Decided to bike Michigan Hollow today. Where the FLT crosses the road, I heard a red-shouldered hawk (which I'd filed in my mind as sounding like a repeating sapsucker), and looked up to see... an osprey? Puzzled, I kept looking and soon two red-shouldered hawks swooped by to harass the osprey. The two were heard and seen again later circling high. Further down the road I heard the Acadian Flycatcher exactly where Geo said it was - thanks. Was not able to get a visual, alas. Two lifers for me, and Luddite ones to boot :-) Also of note were four different singing hooded warblers in various spots in the state forest, a yellow-throated vireo, and a noisy sapsucker nesthole. Finally, I heard what sounded like a Nashville warbler, and found the singer to be a redstart. Last week at Esker Brook we found a redstart singing yellow warbler. Earlier at the SFO Arnot trip we had a redstart singing black-and-white. Are redstarts known to be mimics? Given that the esker brook one was next to yellow habitat, and the Arnot one was close to a black-and-white, I'm inclined to think they're deliberate mimics. The Arnot one was quite interesting, in fact. I suspected right away that it was a redstart, but wasn't entirely sure why I thought so. Then we got an opportunity to hear both the redstart and black-and-white in succession, and to my lo-fi human ears they had the same pitch and timbre. The only difference was emphasis - the redstart seemed to be shouting while the bw sang more calmly. [cayugabirds-l] sound help?
Tonight between 8:35 to 8:55 PM a bird was singing loudly in SSW which is practically my back yard. It sounded like a cross between a Wood Thrush and a Whip-poor- Will. It was a deep, flute-like sound, repeating in descending 7-8 notes, with a resonance that was really loud. Could anyone venture a guess as to what it might be? It was near, flew far and called, came closer and called--always the same song. [cayugabirds-l] Lark Sparrow report
Hi all, For the benefit of those of us who do not receive Tompkins County eBird Rare Bird alerts, a Lark Sparrow was reported today just outside of Ithaca by Ryan Candee. He had this to say about his report: It was just out of town near Slaterville road. About a mile west of 6 mile creek, it flew towards town...Pretty lucky, just looked up from the deck and saw a sparrow with a clean white breast with a single dark spot in the middle, rufous cap/crest, and dark facial/throat marks. He then flew over me towards town and the lake. I am out of town, so I won't be able to do anything about this bird even if it does stick around. Indeed, relocating this bird would be quite a challenge, given the nature of the encounter. However, anyone who is in the area may want to be slightly more vigilant than usual. This is quite a rare bird in the area (first eBird record for Tompkins, I think). Re: [cayugabirds-l] sound help?
I lived on Hanshaw near Sapsucker for 28 years and just moved to Lansing in January. Sapsucker Woods (the part owned by Lucente) was behind our house and I routinely heard Whip-poor-wills around 9 pm until the houses on Sanctuary Drive were built. After that the Whip-poor- Will. were silent. Maybe they are coming back?
