[cayugabirds-l] NORTHERN FLICKER and PILEATED WOODPECKER
are working a dying cherry tree in our front yard. We rarely see NORTHERN FLICKERS here along the edge of the lake, let alone 2 of them. [cayugabirds-l] Redpolls
A couple of Redpolls have joined the 40+ Goldfinches at my feeders this morning. They seem to have replaced the two Pine Siskins that were here for a few days. Although I have a feeder devoted to niger, it's not as popular as my big hopper-style feeder, which I keep filled with the Turek Farm (King Ferry) black oil sunflower seed. That stuff contains quite a lot of kernels lacking hulls, which makes things easy for finches with tiny bills. And I throw some niger in the hopper too. The squirrel proof feeder has adjustable spring-loaded perch bars, which I've set to accommodate six or eight small birds but exclude Blue Jays. (The Jays eat off the ground or visit an open platform feeder.) -Geo -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
RE: [cayugabirds-l] NORTHERN FLICKER and PILEATED WOODPECKER
Sally’s usually not seeing NO. FLICKERS by the west shore of the lake is interesting to me, since I have Flickers here on the east shore of Cayuga Lake/Lansing all the time in the warmer months, as well as Pileated Woodpeckers, which I see in winter, too. I get to compare what Dave Nutter calls the “monotonous” call of the Flickers with the “maniacal” call of the Pileated Woodpecker! Donna L.
