Re: [cayugabirds-l] Raven courtship

2015-03-07 Thread Geo Kloppel
I've been getting the same thing from the Ravens here, though more
business-like, not as showy, perhaps because this is an established pair...?

Just now they went over quite low, in close tandem flight, making soft
vocalizations. One was carrying a food item, or more likely a wad of nesting
material, as they headed up toward the traditional nest site (north face of
Sorry Hunter Hill, 1920' elevation)

[cayugabirds-l] Fresh, fragrant manure - How lovely

2015-03-07 Thread John Confer
Just ~200 yds southeast of the Triangle Diner is a newly spread patch of
manure. There were ~50 Horned Larks and ~75 Snow Bunting close to the road.

And about a half mile south of there on Center Rd, which has a T-junction with
Lake Rd at the Treleavan Winery, there were ~6 Lapland Longspurs along with ~15
Horned Lark. The HOLA were conspicuous in many locations

Tufted Duck present at 3:30, found with the assistance of David Nutter.

No gyrfalcon along Seybolt Rd.

Cheers,

[cayugabirds-l] Sunday CBC Field Trip- daylight savings

2015-03-07 Thread John Confer
Do remember to move the time on your clocks one hour forward, i.e., less sleep.
See you tomorrow at 7:45 at the parking lot opposite the Dairy Bar., or at the
Lab before 8:00

Should you forget, our first stop of considerable duration will be at Myer's
Point, but don't forget.

Tufted Duck, Lapland Longspurs, and Snow Buntings better than a 50/50 chance,
and others.

[cayugabirds-l] Tufted Duck musings

2015-03-07 Thread Dave Nutter
Two points of potential interest about Tufted Ducks, in addition to the fact
that the short-tufted male continues (as late as 3:30pm) close to the point at
the Ithaca Yacht Club:

I did not see the Tufted Duck in the Ladoga area but I am told that on 22
February it was seen to have a normal long tuft. Did other observers see this?
Does anybody have photos which might argue for this being the same bird having
lost tuft feathers or for it being a different bird based on some other
characteristics, such as bill markings?

If you are interested in the species in its native climes, albeit not a totally
natural situation, below is a link to a half-hour movie, 50 or more years old,
from Sweden, which Stefhan Ohlström sent me. The movie is in black-and-white,
which works fine for this species, and the narration, without subtitles, is in
Swedish, but this also doesn't matter a whole lot if you don't listen Swedish,
as the plot is pretty obvious. I will explain the title, Viggen Viggo. You
may have heard of the actor, Viggo Mortensen, who my wife Laurie tells me is an
Upstate New Yorker of Danish heritage. Viggo is just a Scandinavian first
name. But Vigg is the common Swedish name for _Aythya fuligula_, what we call
Tufted Duck. The suffix -en is the Swedish way of indicating the article
the. So the title means, Viggo the Tufted Duck, but of course it is more
cute in Swedish.
