Re: [cayugabirds-l] Geese!
Despite stiff NW winds yesterday afternoon (Tu 17 Mar), about 3:30pm I saw several flocks of SNOW GEESE totalling about 270 birds powering north over downtown Ithaca. Later I noticed a mixed flock of CANADA GEESE SNOW GEESE northbound over my house. Sandy Wold mentioned on Sunday afternoon on Yale Farm Rd, again in stiff NW winds the initial flocks of 180 westbound SNOW GEESE. During our stay several more flocks followed, totalling over 800. --Dave Nutter On Mar 17, 2015, at 08:51 AM, Dave Nutter nutter.d...@me.com wrote: As I biked home from a meeting in downtown Ithaca at 8pm I heard northbound Canada Geese fairly low. Between 10 11 pm Laurie I went for a walk on the path in Cass Park. (It was a bit disorienting to be walking on bare pavement rather than cross-country skiing.) As I hoped, several times I heard northbound Canada Geese and Snow Geese overhead despite a few drops of rain. With some difficulty I was able to discern a few Snow Geese from my yard, which is a very noisy location among busy (wet) roads, bridges, a nearby small but full-running stream waterfall, plus much of it is elevated enough to pick up sirens anywhere downtown. --Dave Nutter On Mar 16, 2015, at 04:54 PM, Laura Stenzler l...@cornell.edu wrote: Since around 3 pm the goose flocks have been constant. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Geese!
Still more flocks of geese are entering the Cayuga Basin at West Danby this morning. We have clear skies overhead, but a heavy band of lake effect snow is passing on our eastern horizon, and its fringes are lit by the rising sun. The distant flocks are highlighted against these bright clouds; their northward advance is noticeably slowed by the strong headwind. -Geo Kloppel -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Not avian flu, cholera as it says in the article. Bacterial not viral. Only the birds suffer. [cayugabirds-l] N. Goshawk
I saw a beautiful adult northern Goshawk perched in a tree above an old barn foundation half way up the north side of Yellow Barn Road this evening at around 6:45. On another note, this past weekend I had pine siskins and common redpolls join the regular Am. goldfinches at my feeder up near the top of hunt hill road. Other than a single redpoll a month, or so, ago I had seen neither all winter. [cayugabirds-l] Red-tailed Hawk Fight
Hi All, Yesterday, I came upon a pair of Red-tailed Hawks on Ledyard Road that were locked in combat or that's what it appeared like. A man who saw it all start said there had been a third hawk there when it began. When I first saw them, the hawk on the bottom was barely moving. Then there would be brief heavy moments of struggle with the top hawk being the aggressor. It appeared like the bottom hawk did not escalate the fighting but remained in a defensive posture, curling its wings and tail to protect itself. At the end, they released, had a brief stare down and then the loser flew away. I am wondering if anyone would know the age of the two hawks and if that may help tell the story. I don't have the photos all up yet, but here are some that show the wings and the tail feathers. It was fascinating if not a bit worrisome watching them. I was relieved to see only a bit of blood where the talons were grasping each others, and that they both flew away. I have many more photos, but I think there are enough angles here for id purposes. http://www.dianawhitingphotography.com/Galleries/Birds/Red-tailed-Hawk-Fight/48060565_ZVDm2x#!i=3936330011k=cHcxwCf Diana Whiting Diana Whiting http://www.dianawhitingphotography.com/ -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
