[cayugabirds-l] 11 Lesser Black-backed Gulls at Stewart Park

2016-03-19 Thread Gary Kohlenberg
Hi all,
Late Tuesday afternoon I birded Stewart Park shoreline for a
bit to see if I could find any Green-winged Teal. I was able to find two males
feeding close to shore by the tennis court. I then saw a Lesser Black-backed
Gull in beautiful breeding plumage down by the maintenance shed. Dave Nutter
stopped by on his bike for a, fossil-fuel free, shoreline scan. After admiring
this beauty we started to find more of these small dark gulls along with a
flyover Iceland Gull. Jay, Livia and France joined in fun and before we
finished the tally was 6 in breeding plumage, 2 in streaky head winter plumage
and 3 2nd year types. The other three of our common gull types were in
attendance as well. Most of the gulls concentrated east of the playground area
with many at the extreme SE corner.
The lake was like glass, the viewing very nice, although numbers of waterfowl
were pretty low. There were more than two dozen Ruddy Ducks and a smattering of
Mergansers, Mallards, Coots, Bufflehead and two Horned Grebes. One
Double-crested Cormorant swam near the pilings on the western side.

Gary

2016-03-19 Thread Cynthia Marino
thanks everyone for the tips and advice on locating the bird. We found it
easily and got nice close views, as it popped in and out of the yew shrubs
near the entrance to the Cornell campus store. This was between 12:30 and
1:00 pm today.

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Osprey

2016-03-19 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
I saw no osprey in Cayuga nor did I see any in my travels today. A lady
walking the Seneca Trail along the river took a picture of a male
hovering above the platform (seen from the bridge on Rte. 5 & 20, just
E. of MNWR entrance) & showed it to the lady at the desk. MNWR main
drive will open on 1 April.

The bald eagle on the Mud Lock nest was moving around, maybe turning her
eggs. An adult eagle was in a tree on Frontenac Island west of Union
Springs. Maybe someday the trees there will grow large enough for an
eagle to safely build a nest.

Many pintail ducks remain in the flooded field along Carncross Rd.. Nice
to see May's pool is flooded. Lots of muskrat houses will provide
nesting sites for Canadas & ducks & maybe the rats will keep the
cat-tail growth in check so birders can have better viewing.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] More Siskins/B Eagle

2016-03-19 Thread Donna Lee Scott
I have had 2 PINE SISKINS in with my many A. GOLDFINCHES here at my feeders
over the last 2 months or so. The siskins more or less stick together and many
days I do not see them.

Also, along with all my usual feeder birds, I saw a juvenile BALD EAGLE soaring
around and then perching on my White Oak tree on the cliff overlooking the
lake. The A. CROW family wasted no time in coming over to mob the eagle, who
sat up there awhile looking all about before it took off and gracefully flew
north. The eagle had a half-yellow bill and when the feathers on its head blew
up in the wind, the feathers appeared buffy-colored.

After the eagle show, I spotted to the east side of the road, soaring around in
circles against the clear blue sky, a lovely RED TAILED HAWK.

[cayugabirds-l] feeder birds

2016-03-19 Thread AB Clark
Just outside of the Basin, Hile School Road:

Since Thursday 17 March, only two rather than a dozen American Tree Sparrows
have visited my feeders. They are here this morning, and one just did
“crest-up" at the other, which kept crest feathers flat—I assume two males.

This morning 19 Mar, the White-crowned Sparrow adult, I assume the same one
that has been here for weeks, again showed up to confirm his continued
presence. Also a definite female Red-winged Blackbird came to the feeder area
where about a dozen males in various stages of maturity are feeding.

Larger Tree Sparrow flocks (12 or so) were still around in hedgerows on
Thursday, however; they just didn’t zero in on my feeders.

Tuesday last week (15 Mar) was the first day I confirmed females in a flock of
Red-winged Blackbirds along Hile School Road.

And the maple tree on the NW side of the house is blooming strongly today.

Anne

[cayugabirds-l] Another Phoebe or two

2016-03-19 Thread Geo Kloppel
I thought I glimpsed a Phoebe yesterday out the window, flitting away from last
year's nest under the eaves. I didn't see it again, or hear anything, but this
morning at least one is singing in the sunshine here. Earlier, the same or
another one was singing near a different nest site on a building that's down
the road a stretch.

Spotlight on Young Bird Researchers

Speakers: Conor Taff, postdoctoral associate, Cornell Lab; Sahas Barve, Cornell
Ph.D. candidate; Taylor Heaton Crisologo, Cornell undergraduate.

Join us for this special Monday Night Seminar showcasing three outstanding
young researchers and ornithologists. Conor Taff, a postdoctoral associate at
the Cornell Lab, will talk about the elaborate songs and plumage of male Common
Yellowthroats and how these traits evolved over time. Ph.D. candidate Sahas
Barve is an avid birder and exceptional ornithologist from India. He'll discuss
his work on the coping mechanisms birds use to survive high in the Himalayas.
Then, Cornell undergraduate Taylor Heaton Crisologo will spotlight the
strategies used by Herring Gulls to defend their nests and protect their chicks.

[cayugabirds-l] Cooper's Hawks

2016-03-19 Thread Annette Nadeau
I enjoyed really nice views of two COOPER'S HAWKS this afternoon over the
pond behind Hospicare (South Hill, Town of Ithaca). One hawk was chasing
the other and giving the "kek kek kek" alarm call. I don't often hear
these birds vocalize, so it was quite a thrill!

[cayugabirds-l] Evening Woodcock

2016-03-19 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Returning at dark dusk from Central NY's BEST Friday night fish fry and tartar
sauce (really! - Linda's Diner, North Lansing on Rt. 34 at corner of Locke Rd.,
ho hum salad, but fish is great, including if you ask for it broiled; good
desserts, too),
I decided to stop along Algerine Road down hill, west of Ludlow Rd. (Lansing,
off NY Rt. 34B) by the water main access concrete pad and fire hydrant to
listen for Woodcocks.
I was not disappointed; I heard one AMERICAN WOODCOCK, mostly several flight
twitters, and only one faint "peent". My first this year, a thrill! It was on
the north side of the road.

At home today lots of birds visited my feeders and ground food, including a
TREE SPARROW, 2 handsome, bright WHITE THROATED SPARROWS, along with the many
male RED WINGED BLACKBIRDS, JUNCOS, the SONG SPARROW, the numerous A.
GOLDFINCHES, 1 female BROWN HEADED COWBIRD, the 6-member A. CROW family, and
the other usual feeder birds.

[cayugabirds-l] siskins

2016-03-19 Thread Bill Mcaneny
It's been a long winter without Pine Siskins but there are 3 at the feeders
this morning. Also a small flock of Cedar Waxwings on a crabapple. Several
seem to be paired, feeding and moving together. One Tree Sparrow still
here.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Mall birds

2016-03-19 Thread Melanie Uhlir
Correction: I think the lone tree is actually a cherry tree.

I know starlings are "bad birds" but their breeding plumage is actually
quite striking in the sun.

[cayugabirds-l] signs of spring, vestiges of winter

2016-03-19 Thread Dave Nutter
This morning I biked to Stewart Park and found several new birds. Where the
Cayuga Waterfront Trail goes behind the Cornell Rowing Center I heard an
Eastern Meadowlark song. Tracing the sound to the top of a tree, I expected to
see a European Starling, but instead it was the real thing. After sunning
itself for awhile and intermittently singing it dropped down to the Carpenter
Business Park - the bit of field just south of the Community Gardens. This
seems far too small to support meadowlarks, so I figure it just stopped by on
migration. I did see some evidence of bird movement on the radar before dawn
this morning.

At the Swan Pond I saw a rufous bird fly from the southwest corner over to the
peninsula. Fox Sparrow, I hoped, but I was plenty happy it turned out to be a
BROWN THRASHER. I wonder if it’s a new arrival or just a refind of the one Ann
& I saw across the creek in Jetty Woods back on 14 January.

Gazing across toward the white lighthouse, something seemed to twinkle like
snowflakes. By the time I got my scope set up, the white specks had settled
down into a row of 6 TREE SWALLOWS on the wire.

My final new find was midway along the lakeshore where I was looking for
Blue-winged Teal. A songbird dropped down from a tree branch to the mud when it
came back up I saw it was an EASTERN PHOEBE, my first of spring (discounting
the winter bird at Beebe Lake. It was silent.

After biking home I found I was still greedy for birds. I wondered whether any
more Red-shouldered Hawks would migrate past Mount Pleasant, so I drove up and
spent a windy hour there seeing no migrants. There was a noisy female AMERICAN
KESTREL who flew in and perched on a wire nearby, and a KILLDEER also flew past
loud and low. The only raptor-ish birds were a single eastbound COMMON RAVEN, a
few TURKEY VULTURES, and a few RED-TAILED HAWKS. There was one COOPER’s HAWK
but I lost track of it before I could tell where it was going.

Since I had taken the car out I decided to check out the Jim Schug trail near
Dryden Lake. It was pretty quiet bird-wise, but I did hear SPRING PEEPERS and
WOOD FROGS. I actually saw several of the latter in one of the muddy pools
alongside the trail. They floated on the surface and occasionally would briefly
inflate the sacs on either side of their neck (if frogs have necks). There were
too many calling to tell who made which quack. I believe I saw a pair in
amplexus and also a male attempting to grab another frog but get rejected. I
don’t know whether he grapped a male or perhaps it was a female who didn’t like
him. There were also several PAINTED TURTLES sunning themselves.

Waterfowl on Dryden Lake included the expected CANADA GEESE, WOOD DUCKS flushed
from the brushy swamp as I walked by, MALLARDS, and COMMON MERGANSERS which all
breed in the area. Surprises, considering the non-winter weather, included a
male LESSER SCAUP, a female COMMON GOLDENEYE, and a male RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER, which I’m guessing is an unusual bird there. Also present were 3
HORNED GREBES - 2 in winter plumage and one in transitional.
