I also spotted a FOY Field Sparrow in our yard this afternoon along with the
huge numbers of Juncos coming for the millet seed.

[cayugabirds-l] Weekend beginner and up bird walks

2017-04-07 Thread Linda Orkin
Hey all

Just a reminder about ongoing weekend walks at Sapsucker Woods, Cornell
Laboratory of Ornithology. Walks are at 7:30 both Saturday and Sunday morning.

Binoculars available for loan. Meet at the front door of the Visitors Center.

Led by members of the Cayuga Bird Club. Targeted towards beginners but great
for everyone.

Email me if you have any questions.

The weather should be improving and good for birds. Dress warmly.

[cayugabirds-l] Purple finch and "The yellow birds are back"

2017-04-07 Thread Bard Prentiss
Hi,

Gina spotted our first purple finch of the year this AM. They nest in the
Norway Spruces next door.

We also had our first male goldfinch in full breeding plumage at a feeder
today. Before today the yellow feathers were sparse and not particularly
attractive. Then today, as if a new species had arrived, We were treated to the
shocking yellow of our first "yellowbird" of the spring.
"The yellow birds are back" was the very predictable announcement , each
spring, of a charming, now deceased couple in Dryden. Knowing that I like
birds they would give me a call as soon as they saw their first "yellowbird".
I never had the heart to tell them that the dull, mostly greenish birds at
their feeder all winter were were winter plumage "yellowbirds".

[cayugabirds-l] NE Ithaca, Fri 4/7

2017-04-07 Thread Mark Chao
This morning, I saw a BROWN THRASHER singing in our yard in suburban
northeast Ithaca. I think it was the first thrasher I’ve ever found on our
street.

Not far away in the yard, a pair of EASTERN BLUEBIRDS has started to build
a nest in the same box where a pair successfully raised four young last
year. Last weekend, the male was cleaning out pieces of last year’s nest.
On Wednesday and Thursday, the female made several trips to the nest with
new material. She seemed to waste a lot of energy trying to jam very long
stiff twigs crosswise through the box opening. But a few did bend enough
to get through.
