[cayugabirds-l] snow geese...?

2021-03-10 Thread Colleen Richards
After an enjoyable counting of bald eagles at Onondaga Lake this morning I
drove across to Montezuma Wildlife Refuge. On Rt. 31 mucklands there were large
numbers of snow geese on the south side of the road as well as many more
landing further north but out of sight range. At Carncross Rd. there were many
Canada geese and some ducks on the front waters, but many snow geese were
behind them on other open water stretches. Hopefully they will be in closer
viewing range in the coming days. Colleen Richards

[cayugabirds-l] Goose Report

2021-03-10 Thread Sandy Podulka
I, too, checked a few places for geese this evening. W. Loop Road,
north of Route 31 and west of Port Byron, had hundreds or more Canada
Geese and ducks, easily visible from the overlook, but good light
would be in the morning, as you are looking west.

Morgan Road was frozen--no birds, but along Carncross Rd. there were
lots of Canada Geese and some ducks, including Northern Pintail. At
the end of Van Dyn Spoor Rd. there were many Canada Geese and ducks
and a few Snow Geese.

No Snow Geese at East Road, but a few Canadas and ducks--still not
nearly as busy as it often is.

When I reached Cayuga Lake around 5 pm, the huge flocks of Snow Geese
were north of the Railroad Trestle, and could be seen in the distance
from Route 89 north of Cayuga Lake State Park. At the southern end
of Cayuga Lake State Park, where Lake Rd. joins 89, the huge flock of
mixed ducks and Canada Geese that Laura saw was still present.
Because there is ice near shore, they are still fairly far out in the
lake. Just south of there along Route 89 were some small groups of
Tundra Swans a bit closer to shore.

Hopefully as the ice continues to melt we will have closer views of
all these birds!

Someone posted a spotting scope on here in the last week...wondering if it
is still available?

The thousands of geese today, and 4 sandhill cranes at Montezuma visitor

Great day out there!

[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese at the north end of Cayuga Lake

2021-03-10 Thread Laura Stenzler
Today (Wednesday), after spending the morning on our south facing deck watching
loads of Canada and snow geese fly over, Ton and I drove around Cayuga lake.
On the northwest side, at the south end of the ice (which is south of Cayuga
Lake State Park, where Lake Rd. rejoins 89) we found two huge flocks of snow
geese in the water and on the ice, as well as a really big mixed raft of
ducks. Mostly redheads, but also lots of scaup and smaller numbers of black
ducks, ring-necked ducks, wigeon, gadwall, pintails, canvasbacks, hooded
mergansers, red-breasted mergansers, bufflehead, mallards, swans, black-backed
gulls, a bald eagle (which got the snow geese up into the air)..it was
really amazing! We could pull off on Lake Road just before it rejoins 89 and
had great views - with and without a scope. They will probably be there
tomorrow as well. Highly recommended!

RE:[cayugabirds-l] Geese

2021-03-10 Thread Deb Grantham
I've been hearing lots of Canada geese at night here, over Sheffield Road. As
late as 11 pm.

This morning, I saw a large V of Canada geese, then one of Canada geese with 4
white and I assume snow geese leading it, then a large sloppy V (I notice the
snow geese have sloppier Vs than Canada geese) overhead.

FOY 3 male red-winged blackbirds yesterday here on Sheffield Road.

Flocks of blackbirds every day for several weeks. I think many are starlings.

Two days ago, a cardinal pair mating and then another arriving so that the 2
males were chasing each other around.

A pair of bluebirds today, but they've been here all winter.

Deb

keeps a log of Osprey sightings around Cayuga Lake during the season.

Please keep an eye out near the Allen Treman Marine Park Osprey platform

tend to arrive a few days before the others, however arrival dates are no
longer predictable. In addition, please keep your eye on the Osprey nests

so very much and good birding!
