Re: [cayugabirds-l] Merlin

2021-03-23 Thread Dave Nutter
On Inlet Island there’s a tall flat-topped metal pole for electric wires. I
have seen at least ten different species of birds choose to perch on top of
that pole. Twice in the past few days I have seen a Merlin there. The more
recent time the Merlin appeared to be urged off by a Rock Pigeon, perhaps (the)
one who likes to display there.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Bad news for Osprey along 5 & 20

2021-03-23 Thread Dave Nutter
It’s still early for Ospreys to come back. I think the questions are what the
birds will do when they return, and whether people will continue to knock down
nests if Ospreys choose to build other than on discs.

Ospreys and we who love them have been incredibly fortunate that NYSEG’s policy
changed a number of years ago from tearing down Osprey nests to boosting the
nests away from wires on platforms. I think this change was a major reason
their population has increased in our area. I think it was largely the work of
their forester, Paul Paradine (sp?). Platforms of the same design have also
been placed on poles that don’t have wires. Other institutions and tower owners
are not so enlightened. Maybe those folks could use a letter or call to wake
them up.

As for the discs, where NYS-90 crosses over the Clyde River you could see where
Ospreys made their choice. They shunned the disc, but nested nearby. I’m not
optimistic, but my pessimism has been proven wrong before (The martin box at
Stewart Park for instance, has succeeded where I thought it would not). We
shall see.

RE:[cayugabirds-l] Merlin

2021-03-23 Thread smb4inc
The local northeast area of Ithaca Merlin returned last week.  I saw the Merlin
while looking for the crows.  Initially heard then seen chasing whomever
possible near St. Catherine's Church on Siena X Blackstone.  The Merlin has
been flying around the neighborhood since then.
This morning the Merlin was perched in a tree in my yard and was quite vocal.

It's a little early yet - there are no sightings in eBird for Osprey
north of Jacksonville and south of Interlaken before 3/31.  Marty always
spots them before I do, but I didn't see them until April Fool's Day
last year.

at the end of last winter, was rebuilt and used successfully again last
spring/summer, and went missing again about a month ago, I assume torn down but
didn't see it being done.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Bad news for Osprey along 5 & 20

2021-03-23 Thread Robyn Bailey
Hi Donna and Ann,

This work is being done by National Grid, not NYSEG. NYSEG does not own that
particular stretch of transmission.
The discs are non-conductive, and from what I understand, they usually place
some sticks into the disc to try and attract the Osprey. Let’s hope it works
and is a safer solution for the birds.

Best,
Robyn Bailey
