RE: [cayugabirds-l] egrets

2021-08-27 Thread Muhammad Arif
I was just at Ithaca Falls and I can confirm they are Great Egrets. One was at
the base of the falls, the other two up on the gorge wall on the north side
farther away from the falls. The one from the base flew over to one of the
egrets, they had a little squabble and all three remained on the wall. Every
once in a while, one would fly down to the water lever and search for food.

Pretty cool to watch wildlife so close to home. (I live two blocks from Ithaca
Falls)

Other observers reported three Great Egrets (the much more expected species,
black legs with yellow bills) at this location last night. Interesting spot for
them, so cool observation.

That is an interesting spot. I wonder what effect abundant rain and water flow
might have had on this spot that perhaps made it more attractive and lured them
there.

[cayugabirds-l] Observations from Carncross Rd

2021-08-27 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
Yesterday I ventured down Carncross Road in Savannah to check out the level of
the river- it's high! And FYI, as of yesterday afternoon, the road was flooded
over and I would not attempt to drive through it. However, paddling on the
river this time of year is usually impossible due to low water levels and lots
of plant growth, but due to all the rain, it's very accessible to paddling!
Usually this is something you can do only in early-mid spring, before the Canal
opens and water levels drop, and before the plants grow in. I had a great
paddle to the north of the bridge, and the wooded flood plain adjacent to the
river was full of water, which is a really cool experience to paddle. We saw
many Osprey, Black-crowned Night Herons, an American Bittern in flight, Green
Heron, mixed swallows, Eastern Kingbirds, American Goldfinch, Great Blue
Herons, Great Egrets, Gulls, and probably more I'm forgetting.

What prompted me to write though, was what we observed driving along Carncross
in the direction of the bridge. There were 3-4 American Crows in the road ahead
of us, as we got closer they flushed, and out of nowhere, a juvy Northern
Harrier appeared. At first, I thought the harrier was after the crows. But then
it became obvious the harrier was dive-bombing the crows, which were now
perched in a tree with others (on the north side of the road, in the salt
marsh). Then, a MERLIN came out of nowhere and joined the melee. It wasn't
totally clear who was after who, but it seemed harrier was harassing crows
(circling and swooping at the tree they were in), and then Merlin either was
joining in? Or chasing the harrier? And then above them, was hundreds of
swallows: Tree, Barn, and Northern Rough-winged all flying pretty high (30+
feet up) and swarming. When we finished the paddle, all of these birds
mentioned, were gone.

It was a really cool experience to watch, and try to figure out what was going
on.

Also, unrelated: I did see the Roseate Spoonbill in Knox Marsellus on Wednesday
night, and it was seen again Thursday morning by my colleague Chris. Both times
in the south half of the marsh, out in the middle feeding amongst the egrets
and cranes.

[cayugabirds-l] Final Merlin Tab for 2021

2021-08-27 Thread Karen

Tompkins County Merlin status for 2021
11 Resident pairs
8 known nests    Two known nests failed, 6 fledged young.

One set of fledged young observed, but nest not found (See South Hill below)
Tabulatin of 2021 the same as for 2020
South HillLatest fledging date by at least 30 days out of preceding 50 nests
observed since 2014 in Tompkins County. Thought to be a re-nest attempt
Male and female heard on six dates between 2 June and 10 June in vicinity
of South Hill Elementary School (Daniel Toronto). Considered as a resident pair.
Three fledglings heard near Hillview and Turner Place. Reported
by Jill Hellerman and Joel Tabb as present for approximately two weeks prior to
26 Aug, and independently reported by Susan
Suarez and Stanley Scharf as calling from 14 Aug to 25 August .over Emerson
factory approximately 200 m from previous location .             Three
fledgings observed for 90 minutes by JLC near corner of Turner Place and
Hillview calling and flying in group and all three landing in tree within 4 m
of each other. Definitive behavior and calls                                of
fledglings.
Fledged around 14 Aug., which is later than any previous fledging
by about 30 days. With ~30 days for incubation and ~30 days for nestling stage,
and 4 days for egg laying, nesting may have
started  ~10 June. Conclusion: these late fledglings probably represent a
second nest attempt compatible with reports of calling near South Hill
Elementary School in early June.
Again, thanks so much to all who helped with this tabulation. Truly a
collaborative effort.

[cayugabirds-l] Tomorrow's Montezuma KM marsh Shorebird Walk

2021-08-27 Thread david nicosia
All,
I will be at the visitor's center at 700 am and we will drive over to the east
road overlook and walk down on the dike as usual. If you want to meet at the
overlook be there at 715 am. I am not sure of the conditions in KM marsh
regarding water levels. But we will see and there are always cool birds around
anyway. I would like to thank Jay McGowan for stepping in for me last weekend
when I had to cover at work for when the remnants of Henri were coming our way.
Tomorrow's weather is expected to mainly dry with maybe a few sprinkles. The
winds will be light with temperatures around 70 and high humidity. Expect a lot
of mosquitos so bring bug repellent otherwise you could get hammered by
mosquitos.
Best,Dave
