Re:[cayugabirds-l] cayugabirds-l digest: October 31, 2022

2022-10-31 Thread Margaret Hurley
On 10/30 I also had a pair of Evening Grosbeaks on the ground under my
feeder eating sunflower seeds that had been “thrown out “by a Red-Bellied
Woodpecker. Attempted to snap a picture but alas they flew, so far not to
be seen again.

[cayugabirds-l] More S Cranes

2022-10-31 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Just found 60-70 more Sandhill Cranes in dry, mowed mucklands , south side of
NY Rt. 31 just east of where Rt 89 joins 31.
They must have flown over here from nearby KM Marsh.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] more Halloween Owls

2022-10-31 Thread Robyn Bailey
Speaking of Halloween owls, last night after I finished a hockey practice at
Lynah Rink, some teammates and I were all standing in the parking lot chatting.
Suddenly a large bird came winging towards the rink, and as it got closer I
could see it was a Great Horned Owl. It kept moving and jokes were made about
it needing to deliver some letters. 

This reminded me that my very first Great Horned Owl sighting was also on a
college campus, in Alabama many years ago, but around this time of year.
Whether it is your first time or twentieth time, it’s always thrilling to see
one!

Happy Halloween,
Robyn Bailey

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Halloween (Short--eared) Owls

Hey all.
Been out on Johnson Road (Town of Phelps) the last few nights in the hopes of
seeing the short-eared owls that commonly winter here. Tonight, at about 6:30 I
was looking at my phone and about to head home when I was suddenly startled by
a very sharp "bark" very nearby. I looked up to see 2 short-eared owls cross
the road very near my car and then head into the field on the east side of the
road!
Just in time for Halloween!!
