[cayugabirds-l] Siskins

2024-04-30 Thread Geo Kloppel
Lots of welcome arrivals, including Great Crested Flycatcher today, but I’m
still feeding nyjer seed to a couple of Pine Siskins.

The Ravens at Taughannock Falls have four nestlings. They are quite late
compared to the big and noisy youngsters in my spruce plantation, seeming to
support the presumption that their parents are the same pair that attempted to
construct a nest farther up the gorge in late February but couldn’t make the
sticks stay put upon the tiny, outward sloping ledge they had chosen. I wonder
if they made actual use of the stolen eggs they had cached up that-a-way, or if
that business in which they cooperated was a kind of invented courtship
activity?

[cayugabirds-l] Warbling Vireo, Baltimore Oriole, Spotted Sandpiper

2024-04-30 Thread Evelyn Weinstein
Along the trails by the ponds on my property this morning, were many
species already reported (whew, lots of RBGR) but, such fun seeing a
chatty little Spotted Sandpiper with background chorus of Warbling Vireos
and several orioles. Spring is most definitely here! Happy birding all.

Yesterday I got two male Rose Brested Grosbeaks who’ve also been here today.
Then this morning I got two male Baltimore orioles. A while later the Catbird

[cayugabirds-l] Scarlet Tanager at Lick Brook

2024-04-30 Thread Colleen Richards
Just back from a great hike to the top of the waterfalls at Lick Brook (can't
recall the new name of the Preserve). Lots of wildflowers and native plants.
And we had a red-tailed hawk chase an adult Bald Eagle from its catch of a
large fish just feet ahead of us on the trail. Later saw and heard Scarlet
Tanager, Northern Waterthrush, Raven and bluebirds along with many other
pre-migration regulars. A glorious, sweaty trek! Colleen Richards

Friend, Karen, on Pleasant Grove Lane reports a Scarlet Tanager this morning.

[cayugabirds-l] Warbler Migration Presentation & Walk with the Montezuma Audubon Center!

2024-04-30 Thread Pietrusinski, Teresa
[cid:40634fed-d61b-4da5-9174-42b85d71727c]
Montezuma Audubon Center to Hold Warbler Migration Presentation and Walk

Looking for an outdoor educational adventure for this sunny week ahead? What
better way to start a new month than to learn about the tiny migratory birds
that have made their long-awaited journey back to the Montezuma Wetlands
Complex?

Join a Montezuma Audubon Center educator on Wednesday, May 1 at 3pm for a
presentation on warbler migration this time of year and all the different kinds
of warblers that call the Complex home for summer. Common Yellowthroat Warbler,
Yellow-rumped Warbler, and Cerulean Warblers are just a few we will highlight
and hope to see! We may even hear the buzz from our small but mighty
pollinators in our wildflower meadow.

With our new warbler knowledge, we will head out for a 1-mile leisure birding
walk in our forest and grassland trail. There is one incline during this walk
on our stone dust path.

No prior birding experience necessary! We will provide binoculars and field
guides for the duration of the program.

We will meet at the Montezuma Audubon Center (2295 State Route 89, Savannah, NY
13146).
