[cayugabirds-l] Rust Blackbirds

2021-01-29 Thread Claire Damaske
Is anyone else getting these? I live on Gravel Rd in Tyre north of the
thruway. We started out with 3 Cowbirds last week. Then 3 Starlings and a
couple Red-winged Blackbirds joined them. Two days ago we were up to 40
Cowbirds and yesterday there were about 40 Rusty Blackbirds too! How
unusual is this?

[cayugabirds-l] turkey vulture question

2015-07-23 Thread Claire Damaske
My neighbors (in Tyre) have a large, old barn which they do not use, but keep
in good repair. Tuesday, they were having a vent put in the round open window
on the south side. In the process they noticed a young vulture standing in the
corner shedding its downy feathers. When they told me, I went to investigate
and found 2 youngsters. Now... the neighbors have gone to England for a week.
The barn doors are closed (which they always have been). The south window is
vented... They report having seen a vulture enter there only once. There is
also a north round open window and a couple barn siding boards are missing, so
I am supposing that the parents can still get in. I've gone to check several
times and haven't seen any parents around. The neighbors have had quite a bit
of work done there recently and I'm just wondering and worrying that the
parents have been scared off. Any advice?

I don't know if it's okay to keep this going, but... We have bats in our
attic and our barn. I'm not really sure if they stay all winter. But we
usually have 3 or 4 come into the living quarters during the summer. I
think it would be a good idea to ban them from the attic, but don't know
how to be successful in a safe way for the bats. Does anyone have advice?

But in all seriousness, thanks for the useful information! I've had close
interactions with two Myotis: one in my living room, and the other in the
food court at the Ithaca Mall. Both were successfully evacuated. We often
watch our local bats on summer evenings, buzzing our house, but have not
gotten a good enough look to tell the species of our little neighbors.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl???

2011-12-28 Thread Claire Damaske
I saw on Facebook that the snowy owl has been hanging out all week at the
outlet mall. I live nearby, so I just went over to see if I could see
him. I did! He was on the ground, eating something, in the open space by
the thruway between the Rockport and Timberland stores. After a while he
flew up to pole # 6 which is by some public restrooms and garbage dumpsters
behind the Old Navy store. He hunkered down there. I could see his head,
but probably I wouldn't have seen him if I hadn't known he was there. Then
he flew again and landed on the Waterloo Premium Outlets sign. All right
in the same vicinity. At that point, unfortunately I had to leave. But
he's definitely there! Very exciting for me. My first snowy owl.
