[cayugabirds-l] Birder cognition

2022-08-25 Thread Daniel Graham
Not exactly basin-related but here is an interesting new study on how
birders and non-birders organize knowledge about avian species:

[cayugabirds-l] Short-eared owl?

2021-11-01 Thread Daniel Graham
Should have reported this earlier but on 10/23 at around 6:30pm I saw
a bird consistent with SHORT-EARED OWL on Townsendville Rd. near Fox
Rd. in Lodi, an area where they are seen in winter. It was late dusk
so I couldn't see coloration but it was the right size, lithe and
bulky. I think worth checking the area more at least.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl Romulus (yesterday)

2017-12-01 Thread Daniel Graham
I realize this is too late to be of much use to folks but there was a
Snowy Owl on the ground affording great views about 50 yards south of
Yale Farm Rd in Romulus yesterday (11/30) at around 3:30pm:
https://www.google.com/maps/dir/42.7912115,-76.870934//@42.7951606,-76.8710626,3575m/data=!3m1!1e3

This location has been a fairly reliable area to see Snowies in recent
years (but not last year). There were also thousands of Snow Geese on
the north side of the road yesterday.

This morning at 8 am there was no obvious owl and only a handful of
geese but I travel this way frequently and will report any other
sightings promptly.

There were also several thousand Snow Geese in flight a few miles

rest closer to Cayuga Lake in a group heading due north.

formation.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owls in Varick/Romulus

2015-02-18 Thread Daniel Graham
Yale Farm Rd. in Varick/Romulus (east of junction with Rt. 96a)
continues to be a good bet for SNOWY OWLS. On Monday around sunset,
the heavy streaked owl was in the middle of the farm field east of the
McGrane Rd. intersection (google tells me this is in Romulus). Being
so dark overall, the bird was quite conspicuous on the snow (it even
appears to be wearing a wool cap!).

This morning around 8am, an almost all-white individual was on a power
line right on Yale Farm Rd. about 1/4 mile east of 96a.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl in Varick

2015-02-11 Thread Daniel Graham
On a whim I returned to Yale Farm Rd. on the way home (~5:30pm). I
didn't see the all-white owl but on a telephone pole right at the
intersection of Yale Farm Rd. and McGrane Rd. there was a second very
heavily streaked SNOWY OWL affording outstanding views despite the low
light. Any with three owls is a good day!

The EASTERN SCREECH OWL (brown phase) that Jim Norwalk spotted on

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl in Geneva area

At 10:30 today there was a bright white SNOWY OWL west of Rt 96a,
south of Geneva in the farm field to the southwest of Larsen Rd., not
far from the gas well. This is almost the exact spot I saw my first
snowy owl last winter on Dec 3 (which stayed in the area most of the
winter, along with two others).

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Rt 96a / Woodworth Rd. / Geneva (OOB)

After being absent for the past week, the SNOWY OWL near Rt. 96a in
Geneva is back as of this morning. It was about 100 yds behind #3579
Rt. 96a. For those making the trek, it's worth swinging by the Geneva
Yacht Club as well since there is a BALD EAGLE that is often soaring
in the vicinity (it was there yesterday around 4pm).

2014-02-12 Thread Daniel Graham
Spectacular views of the heavily streaked snowy owl a few minutes ago
on a utility pole at the junction of Rt. 96a and Woodworth Rd. in
Geneva. I first spotted the bird in the field east of Woodworth Rd.
and drove along with it as it glided a few feet off the ground before
it lighted on the pole. The same bird was present Monday afternoon on
the roof of the barn of the first house on Woodworth Rd. It seems to
be quite a regular customer in this area and is not shy about
affording close views. Truly a remarkable animal!

[cayugabirds-l] [OOB] Snowy Owl West of Rt. 96a Geneva / Larsen Rd.

2014-01-29 Thread Daniel Graham
As of 7:55AM Snowy Owl, presumably the same one David Diaz spotted
yesterday, is back near the same spot. Just now it was silhouetted
against the ridgeline quite far from the road, but beautifully
illuminated by the sun. Incidentally, I saw what I again presume was
the same bird back on Dec. 3 in this area--it appeared to have
substantial dark coloration then, but it was too far away to tell with
my small binoculars today. I have heard through the grapevine that a
Snowy was seen in this area in past years as well, so perhaps this is
the bird's vacation spot, so to speak.
